The composer, pianist, and conductor Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff is considered the last in the great tradition of Russian romantic composers. He was born Apr. 1 (N.S.), 1873, at his family's estate, Semyonovo, in the Russian province of Novgorod. At about the age of 5, he began piano studies with his mother. In 1882 he entered the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, but he transferred 3 years later to the Moscow Conservatory. There he studied under the rigorous supervision of Nikolai Zverev, through whom he met many of the most important Russian composers of the time. Tchaikovsky , especially, exercised a major influence on him. He graduated in piano in 1891 and in composition with the Great Gold Medal in 1892.

He became known as one of the greatest pianists of his generation, and he was also successful as a conductor and composer. From 1885 to 1892 he studied at the Moscow Conservatory, after which he began his career as a concert pianist. In Moscow he was conductor of the Imperial Opera (1905–6) and of the Philharmonic concerts (1911–13); he twice refused permanent conductorship of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 1917 he left Russia and never returned. After living in Switzerland until 1935, he immigrated to the United States and became a U.S. citizen shortly before his death. As a composer he was strongly influenced by his friend Tchaikovsky . Rachmaninoff's music, particularly his piano compositions, are characterized by their dark and massive chords, whose dramatic effects and strong melodic lines have made them enormously popular. His best-known works are the second (1901) of his four piano concertos, and the Prelude in C Sharp Minor (1892), for piano. Other compositions include Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini (1934), for piano and orchestra; an orchestral tone poem

While his reputation as composer only came later in life, Rachmaninoff's skill as pianist was well-known and highly respected; he often performed his own works as soloist. He was one of the greatest pianists of his generation, having legendary technical facilities and rhythmic drive, and his large hands were able to cover an interval of twelfth on the piano. Study of Rachmaninoff's Hands, 1925 A Welcome to the The Sergei Rachmaninoff Web Pages Archives! From 1998 through 2005, we had one of the most visible presences in celebrating the musical genius of Sergei Rachmaninoff on the www.
As of 15 May 2005, though, we are now being archived under the banner of the Eugene Ormandy Web Pages. I regret that I have had to put one of the greatest composers, pianists and conductors in musical history in mothballs, but time no longer permits me to keep this, the Ormandy website and the Jean Sibelius Web Pages current.
