The Backstabbers Country Stringband
CD review: Let The Sunshine In
By Rachel Jagt - Rambles - a cultural arts magazine
Toronto-based country crooners The Backstabbers have outdone themselves on their third and latest release, which is their first studio-recorded project. This disc is made up of excellent reworkings of classic country songs and a few really good originals penned by frontmen Bob Hannan and "Colonel" Tom Parker. The band features Parker on mandolin, Hannan on guitar and autoharp, Tony Allen on fiddle, Oliver Bielefeld on accordion, and James "Jimmy Jazz" Thomson on stand up bass. Joining the guys throughout the record are Bob Wiseman, Burke Carroll, Chris Coole, Chris Quinn, Erynn Marshall, and Alec Fraser, who also shares producing credit with Parker and Hannan. Helping out with harmony vocals on four tracks is the lovely miss Kristine Schmitt, a fixture at their live shows. She sounds great with Parker and Hannan and adds a real classic mountain country flavour to the songs. The original compositions are the best tracks on the record. Parker's "The Prayer Line" (featuring his Johnny Cash-esque monologue) and "Don't Throw the Baby Out With the Bathwater" sound like they were written in the days of the Carter family and fit right in with standards like "Let the Sunshine In" and "Likes Likker Better Than Me". Hannan also penned two tracks on the record, the ballad "Right Out Loud" and the inspirational "I'm Gonna Rise and Fall". "Right Out Loud", featuring Burke Carroll on pedal steel, is a sad song about the folly of pride in a relationship.

UW-Green Bay lecture: 'Nurse Without Borders' will tell about helping to heal in world's troubled spots
GREEN BAY-Mary Lightfine, a nurse who has volunteered for more than 10 years to bring emergency aid to some of the world's most troubled spots through the international organization Doctors Without Borders, will speak twice on Wednesday, March 5 at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Lightfine will be the keynote speaker at noon at the annual Women's Recognition Luncheon, which requires a ticket. She also will present a free lecture at 8 p.m. Both events are in the Phoenix Rooms of the University Union on the campus at 2420 Nicolet Dr. Lightfine has delivered babies in the jungle, stepped over bodies of dying famine victims to give food to those who could still benefit, traveled to remote villages to distribute relief supplies after a hurricane, lived in a thatched hut while teaching local health workers to give immunizations, and worked 100-hour weeks in refugee camps to help war victims who suffered physical and psychological traumas. In Mogadishu, she was ambushed and shot at. Since first volunteering with Doctors Without Borders in 1992, Lightfine has been on so many missions she has to concentrate to count the number of times and places: Afghanistan and Somalia twice each, Kenya ("countless times"), Uganda ("three or more times"), Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Tajikistan, Nicaragua, Macedonia. She has done two tours on cruise ship missions that stop at many locations.

Open mic/songwriter nights create a nurturing sub-scene for artists to hone their craft By Mike Breen Photo By Jymi Bolden
Ed Santen and Rachel Sams play a Guest Performer Night at Habit’s.
It's a Tuesday night in Cincinnati, and if you're looking for some quality musical entertainment, you're pretty much out of luck. Tuesdays often are a black hole of booking for club owners, not even far enough into the workweek for revelers to celebrate getting past hump day. And who really wants to miss the latest exciting adventures on television's Big Brother ("Cindy makes a sandwich," "Robbie shaves his knuckles")? Bill Donabedian usually the drummer for local band Crosley but tonight on guitar is on stage (actually, a small performance area under the TV set and front window of the club) with singer/songwriter/impromptu percussionist Swarthy. The venue is a particular favorite for Donabedian he and his bandmates hatched the idea for Crosley last year at an Allyn's Songwriter Night session. The duo runs through a brief set of Donabedian's Pop-oriented songs, which are instantly catchy and well written. They're a nice surprise, which these kind of nights, at their best, are full of.

CCM actor steps into joyous Charlie Brown at the last minute Review By Rick Pender By Mark Lyons
Blake Ginther as Shroeder and Lisa Marie Morabito as Lucy in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown
Richard Hess has a kind of Andy Hardy, gee-whiz, we-love-to-entertain-you quality about him. So when he walked onstage at Patricia Corbett Theatre before Sunday afternoon's Hot Summer Nights (HSN) performance of You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown , for an announcement, I envisioned a typical, tell-your-friends-about-our-shows speech.
It was more than that.

It’s as if we have all just come through two years; everything that came before 9/11 is some distant year ago and what’s come after is part of the unfathomable, unbelievable, sobering year that is yet to close.
I don’t know anyone who has been able to make sense of the three and a half months that have just passed and I wonder how much distance and assimilation it will take for writers, musicians and artists of every kind to make cognoscente and meaningful statements about these changes of every kind that affect us now.
What happened in a green Pennsylvania field, Washington D. C. and New York City on the second Tuesday in September will be sorted out by time but not very soon by any of us still in witness.

Edmontonian Bill Cameron has a letter addressed to Hollywood legend Lauren Bacall sitting on his window sill, ready for Canada Post. He fully expects a response from the star of such flicks as Key Largo and How To Marry A Millionaire. More than 50 silver screen greats have already sent their photos and greetings to the organizer of Golden Memories Film Club, a group of about a dozen diehards who gather monthly to take in movies, mostly from the 1940s and 1950s. Cameron has a collection of 1,500 movies, all on VHS format, and since 1990, members ranging in age from 32 to 79 have been gathering to enjoy musicals, westerns and dramas filmed as far back as 1929.
Cameron became besotted with flicks as a youth. On Saturdays, his mom would give him a couple of dollars and he would hop the bus and go to a movie or two. That was in the early 1950s. A bus ride cost 10 cents and movies at Dreamland Theatre set him back a quarter. The best deal though, was at the Gem Theatre on Jasper Avenue, where a double feature matinee cost a dime.

Using the grant from the SBC Foundation and support from the rural districts, Truman will offer scholarships and technology to a selected group of first-year MAE graduate students. In return, these students will complete one-year internships in rural districts and will commit to accepting employment in those same rural schools for at least the first two years of their professional teaching careers.
Dr. Sam Minner, head of the division of education at Truman, noted that “Large numbers of rural schools experience great difficulties recruiting and retaining quality teachers. It is our hope that the SBC students working in rural districts will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of life and work in rural areas and will remain in those schools for many years.”

Burr, produced by Bruce Allen, featuring Peggi McCarthy and Allen, the play will be performed through Nov. 14 at The Players’ Ring, 105 Marcy St., Portsmouth Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m., tonight at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 14 at 3 p.m. Sister Molly Egan wants Skidmore Laboratories in Cambridge, Mass. to stop producing nuclear weapons. Boston District Court Judge Henry Pulaski wants this "screwball" out of his court - but doesn’t want to send her to jail. Sister Molly proves to be every bit as determined as the hardheaded judge. " Handy Dandy" reveals the surprises each has in store for the other, as they plead, argue, dig in their heels, and - to their surprise - discover how much they have in common. Theatre on the Rocks has produced plays at The Ring annually since 1992. Recent productions include Gogol’s "The Government Inspector," George S.
