Music and Lyrics by Lionel Bart
The Story Perhaps the best loved of all family musicals, "Oliver" is a joyful and entertaining musical version of Dicken's "Oliver Twist". Oliver is the foundling who escapes the indignities of the workhouse to find success and happiness in the London underworld. Oliver's new friends include the Artful Dodger and Fagin, who teach him to 'pick a pocket or two'. The loving and colourful Nancy pledges her friendship for 'as long as he needs her', and for her Oliver would do anything. The evil Bill Sykes is the big love in her life. The plot thickens. What is the secret of Oliver's past? Synopsis of Scenes The place is London. The time about 1850. ACT I Scene 1. The Workhouse - Early Evening

In the late 19th century there was mass Jewish immigration from anti-semitic Russia , and the saw an influx of refugees from Nazism . The Jewish population peaked at 450,000, but has since declined due to low birth rate, intermarriage and emigration. The Best Actor award should actually be titled "the best performance by an actor in a leading role." The same rules that govern the Best Actor category apply to the Best Actress category. (See the complete list of all Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor winners here Winning Trends: Biographies of remarkable, real-life individuals (military figures or soldiers, law-and-order enforcers, historical figures) and portrayals of the mentally ill are heavily represented among male Oscar winners, particularly in the acting awards. It helps an actor's chances of winning an Oscar if the character dies a tragic death during the movie, or is slightly eccentric (or genius). An overwhelming number of actors have won the top acting (and supporting) awards for portraying characters with physical or mental disabilities or diseases:

He was also the holder of two light-line fishing world records. Mr Fayal became a Master Mason, served as secretary of the Neptune Company of the Stonington Borough Fire Department, drove for the Stonington Ambulance Corps and was Chairman of the Stonington Republican Committee. They deftly interweave, and at times, unravel the tangled threads of people's relationships and desires. Patricia does not sing so much as breathe her exquisitley observed details of human nature into your ear - like confidences shared between close friends. She tells her own stories and those of others in an intimate, vulnerable and earnest manner that is irresistable. It can often be enough for a singer to have a beautiful voice, or for a musician to possess real expressive and technical command of their instrument, or for a songwriter to be able to find just the right combination of words time after time. But, to ever find all three of these gifts in one performer is rare.

DECEMBER
ANALYZE THAT: Billy Crystal, Robert De Niro, Lisa Kudrow, Anthony LaPaglia, Cathy Moriarty (Directed by Harold Ramis; Warner Bros.) It sounds like a case of "Mafiosa, heal thy physician," as mobster De Niro helps analyst Crystal get a grip on his neuroses in this variation on the 1999 cornball comedy "Analyze This." Fans who remember when De Niro was a dedicated, no-nonsense artist will be pleased to see him reunited with Cathy Moriarty, his battered bride in "Raging Bull." Opens 12-6
EVELYN: Pierce Brosnan, Juliana Margulies, Stephen Rea, Alan Bates, John Lynch, Aidan Quinn, Sophie Vavasseur, Eileen Colgan, Marian Quinn, Karen Ardiff, Niall Beagen, Des Braiden, Lauren Carpenter (Directed by Bruce Beresford; MGM/UA) The place is Ireland, the time is the repressive fifties, and the destitute Brosnan, ditched by his wife, has his children yanked away by the government and placed in a godawful orphanage. Despite the efforts of plucky barmaid Margulies and her lawyer brother (Rea), things get a lot worse before they get better in this reality-based drama. Opens 12-13
HOT CHICK: Rob Schneider, Rachel McAdams, Anna Faris, Andrew Keegan, Matthew Lawrence, Robert Davi, Sam Doumit, Melora Hardin, Melissa Lawner, Leila Kenzle, Maritza Murray, Tamera Mowry, Tia Mowry, Michael O'Keefe, Eric Christian Olsen, Matt Weinberg (Directed by Tom Brady; Touchstone Pictures) A pretty, Heatherish teenager goes to sleep and when she wakes up, she's an unattractive man in his 30's. As if that were not depressing enough, the man she's become is played by Rob Schneider. Don't you love Hollywood's high-concept movies? Opens 12-13

Java [Adopted: 11-23-2002] "We adopted Java just before Thanksgiving, it turns out that that was a very appropriate time. I give thanks all of the time for adopting such a wonderful boy! He is really well behaved, he settled in and we have not had any problems with him. He adapts to any schedule changes with ease. He is friendly and outgoing and an absolute joy to have around. He loves people and kids and has adapted to having cats around. He has gone to the barn to visit my horses with me and was a really good boy. I can't say enough good things about him, there are honestly no problems with him. I am addicted to these Greyhounds now and I am looking forward to adopting another one when we have more room. "

Ginger Andrews Xander [Adopted: 09-27-2002] "After fostering with this wonderful group for about 6 months, I decided it was time to have a greyhound of my own. I met a shy, black male with a helicopter tail and fell for him. "Bob" soon became Xander and is happily adjusting to life as a pet. Xander is great with the resident cat and happy to help fosters learn the ropes of living in a home."

So You Want to be a Film Composer?
by Lukas Kendall
Film Score Monthly
"Man alive, the number of people who want to be film composers these days... it used to be that when people wanted to be in music, they wanted to be a great pianist or a Broadway songwriter. Then, everybody wanted to be in a band. Now, everyone's already in a band, and they want to make money by scoring films." Lukas Kendall I think it's great that film music is being taken seriously to the point where so many people want to get into it. But like screenwriting or professional athletics, this is a field where the available slots are few, and the hopefuls are many. To start, two tips, from my own personal observations. If you want to be a film composer: 1) Don't try to be John Williams. So many people, especially young people, want to be film composers because they love big, sweeping, beautiful orchestral romantic musiclike the kind John Williams writes! This is a problem in that this is only a tiny fragment of what it is filmmakers are looking for in film score. Keep in mind, I am not talking about John Williams per se most directors would give their left nut for himbut the kind of melodic, symphonic score he has done on a specific type of fantasy film. For one thing, John Williams is around 500 times smarter than most anyone reading this, and he can do these types of scores and make them great, instead of bloated and cliched. More practically, only a specific type of movie that requires a
