BARTOK Piano Concerto No 1
STRAVINSKY Firebird Ballet (complete 1910)
Varese’s , played by a fragment of the London Symphony Orchestra, was given in a performance that was both athletic and precise. Although Boulez’ conducting was tight but expansive the subtlest of hand gestures sufficed to elicit a perfect response from the players; the effect was to draw out the tension between the silence and the sound in an electrifying way. It is hard to imagine this radical work being given a more definitive performance, with conductor and orchestra completely in unison in realising this intimate but intense composition.
After their vigorous and highly concentrated playing of the Varese, Bartok’s

Evening Music with David Garland
Pollini Plays Beethoven and Brahms Wednesday, October 13, 2004
Sir Donald Tovey, re Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 11, the last of his early period: “Whatever elements in its style may be early, all are in a late state of maturity.”
Beethoven himself was pleased with Opus 22 work, writing his publisher that “This sonata is really top notch . . .”. Certainly the performance by pianist Maurizio Pollini is top notch, and we hope you’ll like it! You can hear Pollini at Carnegie Hall on October 17th, playing Chopin and Debussy. And in our second hour you can hear him right here on WNYC as we bring you Brahms’s gigantic, four-movement Second Piano Concerto, Claudio Abbado at the helm of the Berlin Philharmonic.
Sieur de Sainte-Colombe, of whom almost the only fact known is that he invented the 7th string for the bass viol, composed a number of wonderful works for two 7-string viols; you can hear his “La Rougeville” played on authentic instruments by Jordi Savall and Wieland Kuijken during our third hour.

Maurizio Pollini Recital 10/5/97 This afternoon I went to hear the famous Italian pianist Maurizio Pollini playing Chopin and Debussy at Symphony Hall in Boston. I hadn't heard him in recital here in Boston for at least ten years, though I heard him many times at the Festival Hall in London. I think he cancelled several concerts in Boston. The previous times I had heard him he had played Chopin, Brahms, Schumann and Stravinsky (Petroushka) but not Debussy, so this recital was really interesting. In my opinion he is one of the greatest pianists of all time. He played to an almost capacity audience in Boston. The first half of the recital consisted of Chopin's works including the Prelude No 25 in C sharp minor, Ballade No 1 in G minor, Ballade No 4 in F minor, Berceuse, and Scherzo No 3 in C sharp minor. I haven't heard the Op 25 prelude in recital very much, which is surprising as it it is so beautiful. It is rather sad and dreamy, reminiscent of some of his Nocturnes, and has some interesting modulations to other keys. He played it with a beautiful cantabile singing melody. The two Ballades were very dramatic performances. In the coda of both ballades he played them extremely fast but at no time was there any blurring of tone or loss of detail. He brings out every harmonic subtlety and every nuance.
