Anti-Semitism
Since the early part of the twentieth century people have been fascinated with films. My students in New Haven, Connecticut are no different. The majority of them are African American and Hispanic teenagers from the inner city. Many of these students, like other young people of all backgrounds, are self-organized into a subculture that glorifies action movies and violent rap songs. Images of rebellion are attractive to teens. For many, their favorite movie imagery is when the protagonist portrays strength, street smarts, and a cunning character. My students are sent to our high school from other city schools after having failed to perform either academically or socially. As a result, some teachers may lower their expectations of them. Their future educational or career plans are ridiculed by their peers and considered visions of futility. Most students wish to separate themselves from the reality of their ghetto experience. Since their options of escape are limited in space and geography, movie imagery is the expression of their hopes and pseudo identification with the outside world. Unfortunately, the majority of my high school students are not academically motivated. This, however, does not quell their natural curiosity. As an Orthodox Jew who wears the traditional head-covering required by my religion, I am asked many questions by my students. They want to know what I am wearing on my head or if I am Muslim. Their inquiries have led me to recognize that their exposure to other cultures is minimal, and their knowledge of how other oppressed people have overcome adversity is very limited. The knowledge that they

The Be Good Tanyas began in the spring of 1999 as a group of ramblin' gals who came together to share songs and stories collected and created from their experiences of life on the road. With a variety of musical backgrounds, their influences all lay in the realm of roots music - old-time jazz, blues, gospel, folk, and country. Together they began to write and arrange original songs, and collaborate on unique renditions of their favorite tunes. Their sound is original and insightful, yet evocative of a bygone era. With stunning vocals and seamless harmonies, combined with gorgeous acoustic instrumentation, the texture of the music remains warm, honest, and captivating.

HSU WINS HYDROGEN POWER CONTEST: Humboldt State students were awarded the grand prize from the National Hydrogen Association at an international competition this week in Washington, D.C., according to the NHA. Ten HSU students traveled to the nation's capital to present their design for a hydrogen power park that would use the gas from the Cummings Road landfill in Eureka. Professor Charles Chamberlin, co-director of the Schatz Energy Lab, said Tuesday that the students' plan calls for placing the park on the Eureka waterfront, where hydrogen-powered cars could gas up, and excess hydrogen fuel would be stored and shipped to the Silicon Valley. Also, the hotels slated for construction on the waterfront would get their heat from electricity generated by the hydrogen power park. Contest runners-up were Cornell University and the University of Waterloo in Canada.

Theodore Dalrymple EMAIL RESPOND PRINT W henever we learn of events of world-shaking significance, of catastrophes or massacres, we are inclined not only to feel ashamed (all too briefly) of our querulous preoccupation with our own minor tribulations but also to question the wider value of all our activities. I do not know whether people who are faced by death in a few seconds' time see their lives flash before them, as they are said to do, and pass final judgment upon them; but whenever I read something about the Khmer Rouge, for example, or the genocide in Rwanda, I reflect for a time upon my own life and dwell a little on the insignificance of my efforts, the selfishness of my concerns, the narrowness of my sympathies. In my work as a doctor in a prison, I save a few lives a year. When I retire, I shall not in my whole career have saved as many lives as were lost in New York in those few terrible moments, even counting the time I spent in Africa, where it was only too easy to save human life by the simplest of medical means. As for my writing, it is hardly dust in the balance: my work amuses a few, enrages some, and is unknown to the vast majority of people in my immediate vicinity, let alone to wider circles. Impotence and futility are the two words that spring to mind.

December 1996 I n 1962, at the very height of her celebrity, Kay Thompson suddenly and mysteriously moved to Rome and took a splendid maisonette at the top of the Palazzo Torlonia, near the Spanish Steps. From her terrace she could see the Baroque domes of the city. Thompson seemed weary of her public persona, an identity so firmly established that one friend called it "the Eloise and Funny Face thing," as if it were a separate being. Thompson had just brought out a new edition of the third of the Eloise books, Eloise at Christmastime, and the quirky and poetic voice was unmistakable: And when we awakened
he'd come and gone
and in all of this midnight and dark
we could see these reindeers zimbering
through the trees in Central Park
We could even see this tail-light
on Santa Claus' sleigh
and Emily had a baby pigeon on absolutely Christmas day. Eloise was more than a popular book; the dolls, toys, and wardrobe it produced had been one of the first publishing saturation-marketing gambits. The author of Eloise , however, appeared to believe that her creations had overwhelmed her; she was in retreat. "The world is coming apart," she told her editor, Richard Grossman. "Why don't you move to Rome," he suggested casually. "There is nothing you can do here in New York that you can't do there." She picked up and left "with only a toothbrush," she later told a friend.

February, 2005: Martin Scorsese/Warner Brothers Gangsters by John Gallagher When the Oscars are announced on February 27, will Martin Scorsese be getting his overdue Academy Award? He's long been considered our greatest living director, and his influence on subsequent filmmakers is indisputable. He's a tireless film preservationist and a fixture in film history documentaries. Scorsese was nominated for an Oscar last year for GANGS OF NEW YORK (Roman Polanski won for THE PIANIST) I predict GANGS will become Scorsese's BARRY LYNDON, a movie that was met with mixed reviews upon its release but will grow in stature with the passing of time. It just gets better with each viewing. Surprisingly, the Academy nominated Scorsese for THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST in 1988, but such controversial fare didn't have a chance against Barry Levinson and RAIN MAN.

Edgar G. Ulmer is famous principally for The Black Cat (1934) and Detour (1945). These stylish and eccentric works have achieved cult status, but Ulmer's other films remain relatively obscure and his reputation is far from assured. Although he designed for Max Reinhardt's theater, served his apprenticeship with no less a master than F. W. Murnau (notably on Der letzte Mann [1924] and Sunrise Menschen am Sonntag (1929), Ulmer has not received comparably wide-ranging respect. This is due to a career spent mostly in Poverty Row cinema: after an early success at Universal with The Black Cat Hannibal (1960) to a nudist movie ( Naked Venus [1958]). He directed his last film
