But, it was the political controversy surrounding his elimination from the finals of the 1980 Warsaw International Competition and the resultant proclamation of Martha Argerich – one of the jurors and herself the winner in 1965 – "This man is a genius" – that catapulted him to instant recognition and world frame. In 1975, the victory by Krystian Zimerman, the first Polish winner in 20 years, saw the entire country erupt in celebration. Vietnamese Dang Thai Son became the first pianist from an Asian country to win the Competition X in 1980. That year's Competition was also brought to fame by the incident in which Martha Argerich, who was one of the judges, stood down from the panel in a protest over the elimination of Yugoslav Ivo Pogorelich in the third preliminary. 1985 saw the victory return to Europe, with 19-year-old Stanislav Bunin from Moscow taking out the honours. His performance was such that the whole of Japan was overtaken by the Bunin sensation. He started piano studies at 5, and at 16 he won the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition’s first prize and Gold Medal. His mentor at that time was Soviet pianist Emil Gilels, and his idols included Scriabin’s son-in-law Sofronitsky, Sergei Rachmaninov, Glenn Gould, Solomon, Dinu Lipatti, and Vladimir Horowitz. Despite many LP recordings on the Russian Melodiya label and a busy touring schedule, Sokolov remained a largely Soviet secret until the fall of the Iron Curtain. Sokolov’s highly personal interpretations reveal an original thinker, who is also a perfectionist. Sokolov disapproves of music lovers who go to concerts merely to relax. "A concert should be strong, hard, psychological work for both the performer and the audience," he asserts. Sokolov specializes in the romantics - Brahms, Chopin, and Beethoven - whom he considers to be his contemporaries. "Contemporary music is music that's alive now. Ivo Pogorelich won the Casagrande Competition in Terni (Italy) in 1978 and the Montreal International Music Competition in 1980; but it was the prize he failed to win that made him world-famous. In 1980 he entered the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw where his elimination in the third round sparked a fierce controversy which drew the attention of the whole musical world to the pianist. Martha Argerich called him a genius and left the jury in protest. Ivo Pogorelich gave his debut recital in New York's Carnegie Hall in 1981. Pogorelich supports young musicians. In 1986 he established a foundation in Croatia to raise funds for scholarships for young artists to further their studies abroad. Since 1989 the annual Ivo Pogorelich Festival has the aim of supporting promising young musicians at the beginning of their careers by giving them the opportunity to perform together with renowned artists. In 1994 the pianist set up a foundation in Sarajevo to raise money to build a hospital and to provide medical support for the people of Sarajevo. With this aim in mind, numerous concerts are planned for the forthcoming year under the auspices of UNESCO. Ivo Pogorelich also gives many charity concerts in support of, for example, the Red Cross, the rebuilding of Sarajevo, or the fight against illnesses such as cancer and multiple sclerosis. In 1988 he was named an "Ambassador of Goodwill" by UNESCO.

Kahlrasiert wie für eine Pilgerfahrt, mönchische Askese im Halbdunkel. Kein Virtuose im Rampenlicht, nur noch Silhouette. Der Frack als Relikt eines früheren Lebens fremdelt an ihm wie ein surrealistisches Kostüm. Dazu ein kalt glänzender Schädel, wie der späte, sehr jenseitige Marlon Brando in "Apocalypse Now". Das Grauen, das Grauen, raunt es im eigenen Hinterkopf. -Anzeige- Direkt unter dem Dach des Altendorfer Kuhhauses sitzt Ivo Pogorelich, in den 80er Jahren mit seiner exzentrisch inszenierten Künstlermähne und dem weißen Seidenschal für Klavier-Gourmets die schönste Versuchung seit Dorian Gray, und skelettiert unerbittlich zwei Chopin-Nocturnes. Seziert sie im Zeitlupentempo, bis er nur noch staunend und ratlos auf die freigelegten Gelenke dieser Musik, auf ihre Bestandteile und ihren unleserlich gewordenen Bauplan sehen kann. Der mondän parfümierte Salon, für den der späte Chopin das alles komponiert haben mag, wird bei Pogorelich zur klammen Einzelzelle, in der es muffig riecht.
