Home January 2005 January 2004 January 2003 ... December 1997 Don Gillis Piano Concerto No. 2 DON GILLIS (1912-1978): Symphony No. 4 "The Pioneers", Piano Concerto No. 2. Although much of Gillis' music is "light music" and Albany's cover logo for this and previous releases of Gillis is "American Light", these two works are, by the very nature of their form, larger than "light". In three movements (28 minutes in all), the 1946 symphony sounds more like the score to a wide-screen film portraying the Westward push of the United States in the 19th century. The piano concerto, a 1966 commission for a youth orchestra festival (it was too difficult for them to perform), lasts 37 minutes and both the first two movements are moderate in tempo - a very haunting waltz for the second which gets right under your skin - and only the last is a whiz-bang spectacular with a strong whiff of the circus. Certainly for lovers of film music and lighter "serious" music as well! Sinfonia Varsovia; Ian Hobson (piano). Albany TROY 729 (U.S.A.) NOTES 1. Two days after the November catalogue went to press, I found out that the French Accord CDs promised for this month will not be in my hands until February at the earliest. Sorry to get expectations up too soon!

Dr Jonathan Phillips, History, is interviewed by Amanda Vickery in front of the cameras at the Chateau Fort of Ventadour where one of Eleanor of Acquitaine's admirers wrote troubadour poetry in her praise. The interview was for Dr Vickery's six-part series for BBC2, The Trouble with Love, which uncovers the story of how people have managed their love lives over the last 800 years. A half-day symposium on the Trouble with Love, took place at Tate Britain, London in September. Dr Vickery joined the authors, philosophers and journalists Alain de Botton, Rosie Boycott, A S Byatt, Richard Coles, Sebastian Faulks, Jonathan Miller, Susie Orbach, Michael Wood and others to explore the realities and fantasies surrounding the representation of romantic love in the twenty-first century.

Reviews
"Howard Haskin took the third substantial tenor role, that of the ‘shabby peasant’ who breaks into Katerina’s wine cellar in search of booze and stumbles on her husband’s corpse. His singing was as deft as his footwork, which given what he was made to do is saying something."
Michelle Dulak, San Francisco Classical Voice, review of Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, 11 November 2003
"Howard Haskin, comically exuberant as the drunken peasant who discovers Zinovy’s corpse in the wine cellar."
Joshua Kosman, San Francisco Chronicle, review of Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, 11 November 2003
"The rest of the cast was flawless, from Vsevolod Grivnov’s weasly Zinovy, Howard Haskin’s hilarious Shabby Peasant (who discovers the dead Zinovy after Katerina and Sergei have stowed the body in the cellar) and Mark Coles’ sonorous Old Convict to Jane Dutton’s slutty Sonyetka, who steals Sergei from Katerina."

    Directed by Oliver Stone
    Rated: R
    Reviewed by Kirk Buchner
Any screenwriting book will tell you the first basic rule of writing a good script is show, don't tell. But Stone decided the best way to tell Alexander the Great's life was tell, don't show. Stone reduces Alexander's exploits to Ptolemy's (Anthony Hopkins) narrations and shows us just two battles - at Guagamela and India. We hear of Alexander's other advances, but see none. The two battles aren't spectacular. They're so disorganized and confusing that Stone relies on Ptolemy to tell us what happened after one battle. When we get to the film's big moment - Alexander facing up to a warring elephant in India - it has no impact because we've lost interest in this clunker. We're then treated to what seems like an acid flashback. Stone wants to emphasize Alexander's bisexuality, yet doesn't have the guts to give us an honest depiction. The love affair between Alexander (Colin Farrell) and his commander and childhood friend, Hephaestion (Jared Leto), is limited to laughable glances and the occasional shoulder rub. Give me a break! Not once do these lovers even consider a peck on the cheek. They do hug a lot, though. That's about as bold as Stone gets.

Man in the Net (1959 USA): Director Michael Curtiz (Casablanca, Captain Blood, Mildred Pierce) is justly considered one of the great filmmakers of the ‘30s and ‘40s. This forgotten thriller was one of his last films and stars Alan Ladd as an artist who runs afoul of the law when his alcoholic wife (Carolyn Jones of Addams Family fame) disappears. Solidly written by 12 Angry Men scribe Reginald Rose, Man in the Net deserves better than the obscurity in which it has sunk. Little Susan Gordon, the daughter of TiVoPlex fave Bert Gordon, makes a rare appearance here in one of only two films she made outside the aegis of her father’s production company. 9am Sundance

Kandahar (2001 IRA-FRA): Iconoclastic Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbhaf’s story of an Afghan woman’s search for her sister in her war-torn homeland makes its American television premiere this evening. Shot in Iran to avoid Taliban interference, this is a deeply affecting and beautifully made film in the tradition of other Makhmalbhaf works like 1998’s stunning The Apple and 2000’s Blackboards. The film was awarded the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival. How do they come up with these goofy award names? Also airs 10/03 at 3:30 am and 6:30 am.

Uh, oh. we are at the mercy of strange and foreign directors who don't understand the delicate sensibilities and balance needed in a Tennessee Williams play. Edward Hall, from across the pond, is
at the helm of the current A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, and he has misdirected the talented John C. Reilly so badly that the play's real currents and tensions are lost. Williams' love of depravity, sexual tension, deteriorated people, the holes in shattered lives, the survival of the primitive, expressed in poetic terms, is undercut as Reilly shows Stanley rather that being him. He plays the surface, which takes away his strength. He could have been Stanley if he just said the lines, so that a sense of inner danger could be sensed- but by shouting, he has no menace at all. Poor man-I felt sorry for him being so misdirected.
Natasha Richardson, one of the great actresses of our time, peaks a littler early, and basically lacks the frailty, the fragility, the vulnerability of Blanche. She's a big, strong husky woman, and she's the strong one on the stage especially in Act One. I can't believe she can't take care of herself. Chris Bauer is fine as Mitch, and his scene of he and Blanche on a date works well. Amy Ryan is quite good as Stella. I wish the inner magnetism needed in Stanley as he yells "Stella!" were there instead of just the loud call. No wonder the other reviewers love Richardson even in this huge barn of a theatre with abominable echoing sound, she does shine as a star actress, and her character grows (or declines) beautifully as the play progresses. Set by Robert Brill really sets the New Orleans scene, costumes by William Ivey Long are
