Artists Catalogue/Shop Tours ... About ECM Finely crafted and richly-melodic music for strings by John Surman, with the composer and his long-time associate Chris Laurence deployed as primary soloists and improvisers. Surman's development as a writer has been spurred by, for instance, his long association with Carolyn Carlson, dating back to collaborative work at the Paris Opera in the mid-1970s. He wrote "Private City" for the Sadlers Wells Royal Ballet, and was Composer In Residence at the Glasgow Jazz Festival in 1989. He has written music for film, TV and radio plays. In 1993 he was commissioned to write a new suite for the Oslo Radio Symphony Orchestra and Quartet. In 1998 he premiered a new chamber orchestra version of the "Road To Saint Ives", commissioned by the Bournemouth Sinfonietta. In the same year he also received a commission to present new music for saxophone and strings at the Bath Festival. It was this commission that led, ultimately, to the music heard on "Coruscating". Reviewing the pieces on the first airing in Bath, The Times drew comparisons between Surman's writing and "the sonorities of Vaughan Williams, Bridge, and Britten" and spoke of the special "stamp of authority" conferred by the solos of Surman and Laurence. John Surman, on the projects's genesis: "Chris Laurence and I have played together for many years in a variety of contexts, including our regular quartet with John Taylor and John Marshall, as well as in larger groups like the Brass Project. We had spoken about the possibility of getting some music together in a duo format, but somehow never really developed the idea. It was only when I was writing music for a concert in Prague with the Krynkl string quartet that it struck me what a terrific idea it might be to add Chris to the string quartet formation. This could produce a really interesting ensemble in which the double-bass would operate both as part of the string group and as an independent improvising voice.

Your name: Your email: Austro-American Magazine ~ October 2001 Short definition: The Green Room is a very lively gathering place in most theaters for actors/singers/insiders, before/during/after a performance. Doesn't always sport green furniture anymore. The article before you consists of 'Green Room Talk.' My personal mission statement: I love Community Theatre! And I would like nothing better than to conduct a musical for these wonderful singers and actors on a regular basis. I also despise the agents and other professionals who scolded and even punished me in the past for including Community Theatre productions on my resume. I choose gleefully to live with the (apparent) blemishes, because I'm proud of every single one of those shows! About 25 years ago I started to offer my various musical services (singer, actor, pianist, guitarist, music director, conductor, ...) to a "Kellertheater" (translation: "basement theatre;" very similar to American Community Theatre) in Austria. After I moved to North Carolina in 1988 I worked for several theatres in Greensboro. Now as a Midwestener I got involved in productions of two more states: Minnesota and Wisconsin. I found that there are a lot of similarities between all four states.

Home January 2002 January 2001 January 2000 ... December 1997 Felix Draeseke Symphony No. 2 Serenade in F ALEXANDER GRECHANINOV (1864-1956): Piano Trio No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 38, Cello Sonata in E Minor, Op. 113, Piano Trio No. 2 in G, Op. 128. Dedicated to Taneyev, the first trio is an exciting, Russian sounding piece, which anyone who likes the Tchaikovsky trio will absolutely love. There are hints of Rachmaninov in the last movement, which concludes on a much more optimistic note than the Tchaikovsky. The cello sonata comes across as a more serious work with great lyrical outpourings guaranteed to please the most romantic of listeners. The second trio is characterized by Slavic sounding melodies, and a real tug of war between key signatures, which is one of this composer's most distinguishing, stylistic features. It ends highly energetically, and recalls material from the first movement in Franckian, cyclical fashion. The performances and recorded sound here couldn't be better and blow the previous competition (nla) away. Moscow Rachmaninov Trio. Hyperion CDA 67295 (England) NINO ROTA (1911-1979): Piano Concerto in C, Piano Concerto in E "Piccolo mondo antico". Who'd have thought you'd ever be able to compare and contrast Rota piano concerto recordings? And have one of them be on a major label? Well, even though Chandos offered this coupling a couple of years ago (right about the same time as this, apparently, since this was published in 1999 although it was quickly deleted in the U.S.), the music is so irrepressibly upbeat, infectiously melodic and rhythmically acute with the C major work which opens like Mozart and then shows the composer's assimilation of Bartók, Prokofiev, Ravel and practically anyone else of importance in the 20th century (from 1960 and dedicated to Michelangeli), and the E major which opens like Rachmaninov and goes on to pay homage to Romanticism in general (from 1978), we had to make this available! Giorgia Tomassi (piano), Filarmonica della Scala; Riccardo Muti. EMI 556869 (England)

That wise old Greek, Plato, defined music as a moral law that gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, charm to sadness and life to everything. Explain music whatever way you will, the reality is that we are all affected at some time in our lives by the powerful emotions and sheer pleasure that it inspires: and because of this MASTER MUSICIANS, has been founded in North Shields to bring to this region the best of music, LIVE, and at affordable prices. The American MARK ANDERSON, who many thought should have won the 1993 Leeds competition, certainly proved a winner here. SA CHEN, from China, a finalist in the Leeds when only 17 gave a stunning performance before a packed Christ Church audience... and another memorable recital featured the brilliant Russian pianist MARGARITA SHEVCHENKO.

I am happy to hear that we will have new releases of Rubinstein music during this year.
I would like to request your expert opinions about: - Arnold Bax ( I also appreciate your opinion about "Titangel") - George W. Chadwick - These Rubinstein works: Symphony nr. 3 and "Eroica" Fantasy. I discovered the Classical Music when I was 14 years old (now, I´m 40), and I recognize that the Raff discover three years ago has changed my tastes and view points.

    Biography
''We have another marvellous natural talent on our hands'' was the comment made by THE TIMES about this exciting British pianist''s debut London recital. Since then critics, colleagues and audiences alike have had nothing but praise for his many national and
    international prizewinning performances.
A Gold Medallist at the Royal Academy of Music in 1983, Jonathan is now an Associate Professor there, and in demand for masterclasses throughout the UK. In November 1989 he won the European Piano Competition, and has since played all over the world. He has performed with many leading orchestras, given numerous South Bank and Wigmore Hall recitals, as well as BBC broadcasts.
Jonathan''s commercial recordings have all received brilliant reviews in the media. His most recent recording is the first in a set of four that feature a rare collection of pieces by Paderewski of which GRAMOPHONE magazine wrote ''Plowright''s musical judgement is exemplary, with exquisite shaping of phrases and range of colour... the playing is superb''.
Jonathan is also very much in demand as a chamber player and has appeared with Raphael Waltfisch, Yuko Inoue, Leonid Gorokhov, as well as many ensembles including the Scottish Ensemble, Guildhall Ensemble and the Coull and Vellinger Quartets. He has recently enjoyed performing in a piano duo with Stephen Coombs.
