Bruce Adolphe's "name that composer" piano quiz Mikhail Pletnev Pletnev is not just a pianist. He also enjoys a career as a renowned conductor. In 1990, he founded the Russian National Orchestra, the first Russian orchestra to be independent from the government since 1917.
In the 12 years since, the ensemble has become one of the world's leading orchestras. After a three year hiatus from the RNO, Conductor Laureate Pletnev becomes the orchestra's first Artistic Director in January 2003. In this role, Pletnev will lead a group of conductors who conduct most of the RNO's Moscow season.

Mikhail Pletnev- De klaviermuziek van C.P.E. Bach

              Piano's great crusader
The Grammy-winning virtuoso Mikhail Pletnev says classical music is dying. Michael Church takes note
              Published: 28 February 2005
It's hard to imagine a more divine pianistic pairing than Martha Argerich and Mikhail Pletnev, who have just carried off a Grammy for their joint recording of Prokofiev and Ravel. Yet no other musicians treat the publicity game with such magnificent disdain. Argerich has given five interviews in 40 years, and if the famously moody Pletnev gives more, it's either under duress, or because there's something he burningly wants to get off his chest - and I've encountered him in both modes. Originally issued on regular CD (now withdrawn except for inclusion in DGG's 12-CD Mahler set), here we have it in "surround" sound, a mix by Gernot von Schaltzendorf. Ambience is heard from the extra channels, but there is little presence per se.
