The Russian National Orchestra was formed by Pletnev in 1990 and—under his leadership as its Music Director and Principal Conductor—has achieved acclamation as one of the best performing groups around. We hear Pletnev lead his band this evening in works by fellow Russians Tchaikovsky, Liadov, and Tcherepnin. We’ll sample his keyboard artistry as well, as we listen to C. P. E. Bach’s Harpsichord Sonata in G Minor. While Richard Strauss’s “Four Last Songs” were written for soprano and orchestra, occasionally, and that includes this evening, we hear them sung with piano accompaniment instead. Barbara Bonney, whose birthday it is (1956), sings the “Vier letze Lieder” with support from pianist Malcolm Martineau. Little-known choral works by Strauss can be heard performed by the American Symphony Orchestra and the Concert Chorale of New York under Leon Botstein at Avery Fischer Hall on

Tchaikowsky, Pyotr Ilyich Pletnev, Mikhail. The Philharmonia Virgin Classics Mikhail Pletnev's performance of Tchaikowsky's 2nd Piano Concerto is simply too good. This music does not deserve such a dignified interpretation from a pianist as fine as Pletnev. Give me Emil Gilels' pedal-drowned thrashing of this schlocky pot-boiler any time. As for the 3rd Concerto, well, that's another matter. Pletnev is in his element tackling this buearacratic-sounding score. These 2 concertos are works I had a certain interest in for a few years. During high school I found a copy of the score to the 2nd Concerto in a closet at the University of Tampa. I had never heard of any Tchaikowsky piano concerto except for the B-flat minor, op. 23, and so I thought that this 2nd Concerto was some kind of fake edition by someone claiming to be Tchaikowsky. (I had recently heard about the many imposters claiming to have written music by Pergolesi, so it seemed vaguely plausible) (Oh, how I hate that word "plausible.") Anyway, Tchaikowsky did, as I now know, write 3 Piano Concerti. I have an LP back in Tampa of Michael Ponti playing all 3 movements of the 3rd Concerto. This always struck me as an oddity, since virtually every reference to this piece which I had seen indicated that only the 1st movement was ever completed, and that it was not even completed by the composer but by a student of his, Taneyev.

One of them is Avery Fisher Hall. Perhaps when the planned reconstruction is completed, the space will be acoustically more congenial to performances, especially solo recitals. The latest plans call for beginning work in 2009, but since the renovations may cost in excess of$300 million, the latest plans may well be replaced by new plans, which threatens to delay the improvements to the hall even further. The second distraction happened when the concert was supposed to begin. A gaggle of formally dressed men and women filed into the hall and, instead of proceeding to their seats, they stood in the aisles, chatting and laughing. They were patrons coming from an official dinner in the lobby celebrating the opening of the season. Several times the audience clapped rhythmically to remind the merry socialites that the main event of the night was a concert, not after-dinner socializing. When Pletnev came out on the stage at twenty minutes past the appointed time, there were still a few couples chattering in the aisles.

In the lobby, in the elevators, and in the hallways you might have thought you were in downtown Moscow. New York City’s Russian community (the cultural community, of course, and not the mob increasingly responsible for New York’s organized crime) turned out in force, and they were fans. For them Pletnev could do no wrong. And believe me, he did plenty of wrong! Pletnev is the complete pianist. He has the technical equipment and expressive skills necessary to make music on the highest level. I don’t believe there is anything he can’t do at the piano. Unfortunately, precious few of his skills were put to use in making music on the artistic level of which he is capable. The program began with five selections from Schumann’s Bunte Blätter , Op. 99. The first one he played was the beautiful fragment used by Brahms in his Op. 9 Variations on a theme of Robert Schumann. Under Pletnev’s hands the poignant simplicity was gone, replaced by heart-on-the-sleeve over-emoted anguish over every note. Any opportunity to make inner notes more expressive he exploited (whether or not they had any musical significance), and expressive rubatos so stretched the musical line that musical coherence dissipated. This was merely a foretaste of what was yet to come.

In 1990 he organized and headed the first Russian non-state symphonic orchestra (The Russian National Orchestra) that became one of the leading orchestras in the country. At the age of 16 Mikhail Pletnev started his career as a pianist after in 1973 he won the Grand Prix at the International Contest of Music Youth in Paris. He was studying at the Moscow Conservatory under the prominent Russian pianists, professors Yakov Fliyer and Lev Vlasenko. Lev Vlasenko wrote about his apprentice as a conceptual musician whose manner of playing amazed with its personal attitude to every play performed and careful and hearted attitude to a close composer. He said that in such music Mikhail Pletnev discovered the most unexpected and touching details. Mikhail Pletnev was awarded two Russia's State Premiums in 1982 as a pianist and as a conductor of the Russian National Orchestra. This year is not less significant for him, since he was awarded the Premium of President Vladimir Putin.

It hardly seems possible, this composer from whom every note seems to have been dragged as if as the result of some tumultuous artistic struggle. Yet he did - three sets in all. And he himself refers to them as 'trifles'. Not that surprising, really, when we remember that music was his language; hopeless with words, he expressed himself fully only - and totally - through his music. And so the Bagatelles are his small talk, his relaxation. One imagines him sitting at the piano at the end of a hard day's composing, and playing for his own benefit, something light, as it comes into his head, with no worry about somehow unifying it into a cohesive whole of three movements, as for a sonata, for instance. The listener must approach the Bagatelles in the same way. The set that Susan Kagan chooses for her recording is the second set, Opus 119. Their genesis is interesting. Barry Cooper, the British Beethoven scholar, has established that numbers 1-6 date from as early as 1797, 7-11 much later. The complete set was published in 1823 - the year of the Diabelli Variations and the Ninth Symphony, underlining the impression that they provided a repose from the serious business of composition.

They recognized Mikhail's talent early on. He grew up in Kazan where he learnt several instruments, including the piano. At the age of 13, he transferred to the Central School of Music in Moscow. In 1974, Mikhail entered the Moscow Conservatory. At 21, Mikhail won the Gold Medal and First Prize in the 1978 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow which allowed him to tour outside the Soviet Union. His recording of his own arrangements from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker suite and Shchedrin's Anna Karenina created a sensation. In 1980, Pletnev made his debut as a director. As guest conductor, he has directed the Philharmonia Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In 1988, he was invited by General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev to perform at the superpower summit in Washington. In 1990, with the help of the private sector, Mikhail founded the Russian National Orchestra (RNO), the first completely state-independent orchestra since the revolution of 1917. In 1991, as the first Russian orchestra, the RNO played a private concert in the Vatican for Pope Jean Paul II. In 1995, Pletnev was awarded the first State Prize of the Russian Federation by President Yeltsin.
