The 34 Pianists Here are brief biographies of the 34 pianists who are collaborating in the group performance of Beethoven's Diabelli Variations Theme: Joe Patrych Mr. Patrych was educated at the Aaron Copland School of Music where he studied music theory, history, analysis and performance. He has performed as a pianist, conductor and choral singer, and has adjudicated several music competitions, most recently the Degrado Memorial Competition for the past 3 years. From 1980 to 1993 he was Classical Music Director at WFUV-FM, and also the co-producer and co-host of Concert Grande, a radio program devoted to the piano that aired for 17 years. Mr. Patrych has designed and built studios for Harvard University, The University of Missouri at Kansas City, The Edison National Historical Site, and The International Piano Archives at Maryland, as well as many private studios. He is a member of The Association of Recorded Sound Collections, where he is on the Technical Committee. BTW, Mr. Patrych has made CD's with 8 other pianists that are playing this evening. Jane Leslie Jane Leslie is a pianist, composer, and teacher. Her compositions have been honored with six ASCAP Awards and Meet the Composer grants. Her unique piano recitals include her own piano music, as well as classical piano solos. She has recorded two albums of her original piano solos. Her first album, "Dreamsongs" has been featured in radio broadcasts in the U.S. and abroad, and on the Internet. Her upcoming album, "The Gentle Piano," is planned for release in the near future. Her compositions include many piano solos and duets, as well as music for strings, woodwinds, and voice. Jane Leslie is currently a member of the music faculty at Nassau Community College. She holds Bachelors and Masters degrees in piano from the Juilliard School, as well as the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Manhattan School of Music.

The Northport Arts Coalition with the cooperation of The Northport Public Library presents 34 Pianists in performance of The Diabelli Variations by Ludwig van Beethoven Friday April 19 th 2002, 7:30 PM at the Northport Public Library Admission free. Reservations required. The Diabelli Variations This opus, that Alfred Brendel has described as, "The greatest of all piano works," might justifiably be considered an afterthought of Beethoven's. According to most accounts, in 1819 Anton Diabelli, a composer and prominent music publisher, sent a copy of a waltz theme he had just written to 50 composers, requesting that each of them write one variation on the theme for a composite set. He intended to publish this set and to use the profits from sales to benefit orphans and widows of the Napoleonic Wars, but he probably also wanted to promote his new publishing firm. Beethoven was one of the recipients of the theme, but he is said to have refused to participate in the project, referring to the waltz as a "cobbler's patch," or, by some accounts, "trash." The composite set was indeed published, but without a contribution from Beethoven. Nevertheless, the theme must have eventually grabbed his attention, because by 1820, in a letter to one Peter Joseph Simrock, of the Bonn publishing house, Beethoven refers to his work on the variations as, "grand variations on a German waltz." Background This is the first such work that I have created specifically for web reception, and thus it has had no previous live performance with 35-millimeter slides. Like my first such work, Verlaine Variations , this one consists of images that have been specifically designed to cross-fade with each other at particular durations at specific junctures in the music. Alexej Steinhardt was crucial to its success as a sequence or, as I like to call it, choreography. The musical work titled Ostinato is from the Prelude, Ostinato, and Fugue for Piano by Nicolas Flagello (1928-1994). The performance used here is that of Peter Vinograde from the CD titled Nicolas Flagello (Albany, NY: Albany Records, 1997). The Music Intended for solo piano, Prelude, Ostinato, and Fugue The Prelude begins with a restless searching, then builds to a massive climax, and then subsides. The Ostinato consists of a set of variations over an ascending minor scale, which functions as a basso ostinato that appears in several different keys. Beginning with a melancholy lyricism, it, too, builds to a tempestuous climax. The Fugue is a propulsive piece that subsumes contrapuntal intricacies within a vehicle for virtuoso pianism. A three-voice exposition is followed by several developmental episodes, culminating in a chordal augmentation of the subject, marked furiosamente, that leads to a stunning coda.

Vol. XX No. 6 March 2005 A Staple of the Piano Repertoire in a Novel Setting By LISA YUI Since Eugen d'Albert gave concerts of the complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas in the late 19th century, and Artur Schnabel completed his recordings of the entire set in 1935, Beethoven sonata cycles have lost some of their glamour, becoming quite unexceptional—common, even. Numerous recordings, including those of Claudio Arrau, Wilhelm Backhaus, Wilhelm Kempff, and more recently by Daniel Barenboim, Alfred Brendel, Richard Goode, and Seymour Lipkin, have been made. Each year there seem to be at least two or three "marathon concerts" in the city. Lisa Yui and the others pictured on this page are among the 30 pianists to perform in the Beethoven at Yamaha series. Indeed, between March 10 and May 12, another is to take place: Beethoven at Yamaha, a nine-part lecture-concert series of the 32 Beethoven Piano Sonatas, at the recently inaugurated Yamaha Artist Services Piano Salon. A diverse collection of pianists will gather in celebration of this cornerstone of the piano repertoire. This begs the question: Why yet another cycle of the complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas?
