When JAVIER PERIANES (b.Nerva, Huelva, 1978) claimed victory at the 43rd International Piano Competition at Jaen, Spain in April 2001, one of the most prestigious and challenging contests of its kind in the world, he astonished the jury and the public alike for the depth and poetry of his magisterial performances, causing several critics to call him "the new Arrau". Indeed, in addition to the first prize, the jury, whose members included such distinguished musicians as Rosalyn Tureck, Dag Achatz, Guillermo Gonzalez Yukie Nagai and John Bell Young awarded him the Rosa Sabater prize for the best performance of a work of Spanish music (Albeniz's "El Polo) and for the best performance of the commissioned contemporary work. Mr. Perianes began his studies with Julia Hierro, Lucio Munoz and Maria Rambaldo. During this period he obtained top honors, as well as winning numerous prizes. He continued his studies at the Upper Conservatory in Seville with Professor Ana Guijarro, where he was awarded the End of Course Special Prize. He has taken part in a number of recitals organized by Juventudes Musicales, as well as the XV and XVI Ayonte International Festival of Music, where he made his debut together with the Festiva's Baroque Orchestra, In 1998 he took part in the Andalusian Circuit of Music, organized by the Junta (Regional Council) of Andalusia. In addition, he has performed with the Valles Symphony Orchestra at the Palau de la Musica Catalana, in Barcelona, with the Seville Royal Symphony Orchestra at the Teatro de La Maestranza, and also with the RTVE Symphony Orchesta at the Teatro Monumental in Madrid.

"Make love and do battle!" the Russian composer Alexander Scriabin is reported to have said. Much the same can be said about the quotidian philosophy of John Bell Young, a Scriabin devotee who has made a career out of challenging the status quo and getting away with it. A pianist and writer whose eclectic concert career has taken him from Moscow to Mazatlan, and from Paris to El Paso, exults gleefully over a certain lack of strategy that has made him something of a cause celebre in recent years, a kind of new age middle-aged bad boy of classical music.
"Who needs fame?" says Mr. Young, peering uneasily over the lower Manhattan from atop Tribeca's American Thread Building in New York, where he doesn't live, but maintained an office in the 1980s. "Look what it did for Christ…" Indeed, beyond the usual 15 minutes, the ever elusive quarry of celebrity has played no part in his unusal life. "I admit;, he protests suddenly. " I'm fascinated by it, but to presume that fame is a prerequisite for harvesting the extraordinary riches that life has to offer is nonsense. Nor does it have anything to do with money…who says it's not possible to create your own reality?"
John Bell Young should know.

Some members of the CSO remain in a state of mourning and shock over the resignation of this protean genius, as do many orchestra subscribers and patrons. Others think that the temperamental and willful Barenboim cannot leave soon enough. Whichever side of the Barenboim divide one falls on, however, his 2005 Chicago schedule finds him presenting challenging and rich programs with the orchestra, and performing as well in chamber music programs and as a concerto soloist with principal guest conductor Pierre Boulez at the podium.
