SPIRIT OF PHOENIX CHORUS Sunday, August 21, 2005
The Spirit of Phoenix presents Let's Celebrate A Celebration of Life, Love, and the American Way. This acclaimed men's chorus is said to have the best sound to ever come out of Phoenix. The group will delight all with a mixture of love songs, old standards, Broadway, gospel, and a tribute to our Armed Forces. The SPIRIT OF PHOENIX is the primary performing group of the Greater Phoenix Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, and has been an institution in the Phoenix, Arizona (USA) area for over sixty years. Chartered in 1943, they have, like the Phoenix of mythology, risen to become one of the première performing organizations in the Society, have captured the title of International Chorus Championthe highest achievement in the Societythree times, and have earned 14 medals in international competition, making them one of the most decorated choruses in Society history. Community Concert group ends one season, prepares for another By Shari Kaplan Even as its current season draws to a close this spring, the Los Gatos-Saratoga Community Concert Association is already planning for its next season, which doesn't begin until the fall. Closing out the nonprofit organization's 53rd season is an April 22 performance by pianist Cristiana Pegoraro. She showed her musical prowess at an early age and graduated with highest honors from the Conservatory of Terni in Italy at the age of 16. She then left her native Italy to continue her studies at the Mozarteum in Salsburg and the Hoschule der Kunste in Berlin. She later studied with Nina Svetlanova at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. Her repertoire includes works by Beethoven, Schumann, Liszt, Chopin, Ravel and Scarlatti. She also enjoys the melodic lines and technically demanding phrasing of 20th-century Cuban composer Ernesto Leucona. Pegoraro has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras and as a soloist in major concert halls throughout the world. Pegoraro's concert takes place at 2:30 p.m. in Los Gatos High School's Prentiss Brown Auditorium, 20 High School Court. Tickets are $15 per person.

Community Concert season to begin By Shari Kaplan The Los Gatos-Saratoga Community Concert Association begins its 2000-2001 concert season with the Side Street Strutters, a California-based jazz band, on Sept. 10 at 2:30 p.m. in Los Gatos High School's Prentiss Brown Auditorium, 20 High School Court. The ensemble consists of Vince Verdi on clarinet, John Noreyko on tuba, Greg Varlotta on trumpet, Paul Johnson on drums, Joey Sellers on trombone and Rob Verdi on saxophone. The group formed back in 1983, when all six men were attending Arizona State University in Tempe. They formed the Side Street Strutters when they discovered they all shared a desire to explore the colorful nuances of America's musical heritage, especially Dixieland jazz, blues and popular standards. Over the years, they have added Big Band and Swing music to their repertoire. Along with playing their associated instruments, many of the Side Street Strutters also wear other hats. Sellers is a composer and arranger who helps put together the group's live performances as well as their CD recordings; he also plays piano. Vince Verdi serves as tour director and business manager; his brother Rob Verdi is the group's Master of Ceremonies and is also involved in Disneyland's entertainment division. Varlotta is known for the broad range of instruments he plays, which include the banjo, piano, guitar and tuba, as well as his usual trumpet. Johnson is the band's "newest" member, even thought he's been with them since 1985. Noreyko is the group's featured vocalist.

We know that some of you have been anxiously waiting to read the reviews of "Panama Canal: The Cruise," but it's had to wait while we caught up on the shooting of "Return to Houston: the Recovery" and for a new scanner to arrive. The bridge class Dr. Tom Bopp Duo Alexandru On Monday, we were still en route to Jamaica. We learned to waltz after breakfast (but I'm not sure we still remember how). Then, we played some cribbage before going off to our bridge lecture. Liz stayed to watch some games, and I went to hear a lecture on Mythology of Central America: from the Maya to the Cuna, and it was really interesting. We took it easy after lunch. I went to Team Trivia and ended up on the Llano Lamebrains team; we won on a tiebreaker question. That evening, we got one of the best surprises; a guest classical artist performed the first of her three piano recitals. The pianist was Cristiana Pegoraro ( www.cristianapegoraro.com ), and her charm was exceeded only by her fantastic talent. It turns out that she's the premier performer of Latin American classical music. Cristiana Pegoraro (center) jogging around the deck - not as elegant as when she's at the keyboard.

15 Questions to Cristiana Pegoraro
Cristiana is one of the best role models for a new mouvement in classical music. For one thing, she still believes in the beauty of the music and her recitals draw huge audiences and celebrities worldwide. Secondly, she is not afraid of reaching out to other genres, especially integrating Cuban and Southamerican influences. She also likes to explore new grounds and has already released two albums containing her own compositions. But what really makes her so special is the fact that she feels the need for empowerment and has taken on the business side of her career as well. Her label and management company Diva now offer recording, marketing and distribution services in the New York area.
