Orchestra's new season will arrive two by two
By JOHN FLEMING, Times Performing Arts Critic Published February 27, 2005 All Beethoven, all the time. That's the theme for the Florida Orchestra's 2005-06 season, announced today. All nine of the Beethoven symphonies will be heard, most paired with a similarly numbered work by another composer. For example, Beethoven's Seventh Symphony will be on the same program as The Seven Deadly Sins by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht; Symphony No. 3 (Eroica) will be joined by Mark Anthony Turnage's Three Screaming Popes and William Schuman's New England Triptych; and so forth. The number-matching idea is the brainchild of music director Stefan Sanderling, who has spent the past several months trying out various combinations of Beethoven symphonies and other works. One result is the inclusion of 16 works never played by the orchestra, including Boccherini's Cello Concerto No. 6, Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 5, Bartok's Concerto for Two Pianos and Percussion and Vaughan Williams' Symphony No. 1 (A Sea Symphony).

Improvisations by Mr. Levin
MOZART:
Symphony No. 36, "Linz" Nicholas McGegan, conductor Robert Levin, piano The immensely talented Robert Levin returns with a thought-provoking interpretation of a favorite Mozart concerto and a demonstration of his keyboard artistry as an improviser. Nicholas McGegan, an Atlanta favorite, leads ravishing symphonies by Mozart and his Czech colleague Wranitzky. OCTOBER 27/28/29, 2005 PROKOFIEV: Overture on Hebrew Themes PROKOFIEV: Piano Concerto No. 3 SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphony No. 10 Roberto Abbado, conductor Jon Kimura Parker, Piano Always a welcome ASO guest, Roberto Abbado this time contrasts the warm nostalgia of Prokofiev's Overture on Hebrew Themes with the sparkling wit of his Third Piano Concerto, played by Canadian ace Jon Kimura Parker. Shortly after the death of Stalin, Shostakovich bade farewell to his nemesis with a Tenth Symphony filled with biting irony and thinly veiled defiance. JANUARY 5/6/7, 2006, 8pm
