Parker mesmerizes at Debut Atlantic gala
Monday, March 29, 2004 - The Halifax Herald Limited
It was a big night for Debut Atlantic Saturday in Pier 21. It was an even bigger night for nearly 200 presenters, fund-raisers, and supporters who celebrated the first 25 years of one of the most successful talent distribution organizations in the country.
Biggest of all - in addition to the three-course meal, the meeting of minds, and performances by pianists Ian Parker and Keran Xu, violinist Caitlin Tully with accompanist Robert Koenig, and jazz pianist Eric Allen - the over-the-top recital by world-class Canadian concert pianist Jon Kimura Parker confounded the highest expectations.
A cheerful, robust, enormously strong piano player with an irresistible sense of humour, Parker attacked his own arrangement for solo piano of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring - not just another mountain to climb, but an entire range of pianistic Everests - with unparalleled artistic fire.
Wave after wave of powerful sound rolled out of the Scotia Festival Steinway grand pianoan instrument built for such Titans as Parker - sweeping all away before it like Hurricane Juan coming ashore at the height of September's spring tide.
Stravinsky had a 117-piece orchestra in mind. Parker, with his unshakeable concentration and all-consuming artistic energy, did his utmost to keep it that way with just ten fingers.

I n 1984 young Japanese-Canadian pianist Jon Kimura Parker shot into the spotlight taking the top prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition in Britain. As a laureate of the Leeds Competition he joined the impressive fraternity of past winners which includes Radu Lupu and Murray Perahia. I first heard Parker live about ten years ago in concert with the Edmonton Symphony at the Jubilee Auditorium. Parker has a virile stage presence that immediately commands attention. His performance of Prokofiev's daunting Piano Concerto No 3 was unforgettable. With a rich, round piano tone he communicated both the lyricism and the sometimes furious excitement of the work. He did not hide behind the bravura notes but rather made the music his own and conveyed a genuine understanding of the piece. Since that memorable concerto I have heard Parker once more live with the Edmonton Symphony and several more times on CBC radio. At each hearing my initial impressions are confirmed: here is an artist truly in touch with his musical ideas, expressing them with conviction, ample technical ability and discipline.

Marek Jablonski, the internationally distinguished Canadian pianist and teacher who died last year, was born in Nazi-occupied Crakow on November 5, 1939 and began studying piano as a youngster in the city's music conservatory. His first recital took place in 1945 before a most unusual audience. The hall was filled with officers of the Russian secret police the Jablonski family's immediate neighbours. Marek's father was in the Polish armed forces, and the boy was not to see him until 1947. The plight of Poland and Marek's experience of the war and its aftermath left its indelible mark. His love for his native land never faded, and it explains his unique relationship with the music of his fellow Pole, Frédéric Chopin. When Marek was ten, his family decided to leave Poland. They emigrated to Canada and settled in Edmonton, although their initial destination had been Vancouver. Marek continued his studies with Gladys Egbert and attended the Banff Centre for the Arts during the summer. He gradually acquired a reputation as a young virtuoso. Luck played a part in 1955, when the great Artur Rubinstein happened to hear the sixteen-year-old Marek. Rubinstein was enthusiastic about Marek's talent and predicted a brilliant career for the young pianist. The maestro kept in touch with him and was generous with advice.

"We are delighted that one of the worldís premiere pianists will help us close out another exciting Celebrity Series at The University of Alabama," said David Durant, coordinator of music services at UA. "Of course, each of our performances year in and year out has been geared to bringing Tuscaloosa some of the finest artists known around the country and world, and Jon Kimura Parker has undeniably built a wonderful career that has spanned the globe as he has performed from London to Hong Kong. Just prior to his visit here to Tuscaloosa, Parker will be performing again in Hong Kong, and he will perform in Germany just after he leaves West Alabama. So we are truly in for an outstanding event." Equally eclectic in recording, Parker's previous recordings for Telarc have included a solo Chopin album, Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev Piano Concerti with Andre Previn, and a recent venture into comedy as Peter Schickele's pianistic sparring partner in the "Concerto for Two Pianos vs. Orchestra" by the fabled P.D.Q. Bach. Last spring Telarc released a new recording of Jon Kimura Parker performing the Samuel Barber Piano Concerto with Yoel Levi and the Atlanta Symphony.

Jon Kimura Parker Recital Piano Festival Northwest
Jon Kimura Parker Triumphs!
by

Pianist Jon Kimura Parker blew us away yesterday afternoon. Although I had never heard him live in recital before, his reputation had preceded him, so, naturally, I had high expectations. On this occasion he was playing for an audience of pianists, piano buffs and teachers on the final afternoon of the Portland State University (PSU) Piano Festival Northwest in Miller Hall at Portland’s World Forestry center. The first half of the recital was performed on PSU’s Hamburg Steinway concert grand and this portion of the recital contained Parker’s own transcription of Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring.” If you thought that the oft-performed piano version of “Three Movements from Petrouchka” is loud and aggressive, then you haven’t heard Parker’s version of “The Rite of Spring” in which we heard a level of brutal piano pounding that has to be heard to be believed. For this type of transcription to be successful with audiences depends on their being familiar with the original score, recalling the orchestration, and perhaps even associating the score in their minds with the choreography of George Balanchine. Since this was a sophisticated audience, many of whom could do all of the above, the performance was successful. However, about half way through, the piano began going so out of tune I couldn’t imagine how Parker was going to play the rest of the recital on this instrument. At the beginning of the intermission we observed the Hamburg Steinway being wheeled off into the wings to be replaced by a freshly serviced New York Steinway D.

Jon Kimura Parker was on board Saturday afternoon to give a master class in Miller Hall at Portland’s World Forestry Center for PSU’s Piano Festival Northwest. Reynolds proved instantly able to make even the most subtle changes to his performance, so that right before our eyes his performance developed in expressivity and intensity. The second pianist during this session was Erin Bennett, a recent graduate with a Master of Music in piano performance from the University of Florida School of Music. She played for the class the Allegro movement from Schubert’s Sonata in C minor, D.958, which is not a work familiar to most people attending this master class. This is a charming perpetual motion piece very reminiscent of the final movement of Boildieu’s Harp Concerto in the same key. Roberts’ first comment was that in pieces that have a repetitive pattern for extended periods, we begin to hear bar lines. Therefore, he suggested that she adopt a “macro” bar line approach whereby she would group measures to create the impression of a longer line. It was amazing to hear Bennett immediately apply this and create an entirely different effect. They worked together to created a new cohesiveness in this 700 measure work.

VAIL - Pianist Jon Kimura Parker has played for Queen Elizabeth II twice and had jam sessions with The Bare Naked Ladies and Doc Severinson's band. He grew up idolizing piano legends like Arthur Rubenstein, while at the same time learning the works of Elton John, so much that his knowledge of the Rocket Man took him from awkward times in high school to being a hero of his class. "I played for and met Queen Elizabeth twice for official events arranged by the Canadian government and they were both incredibly exciting experiences," Parker said.

Classical pianist Jon Kimura Parker is known for bringing a touch of irreverence to the concert hall, incorporating the theme from The X-Files into the cadenza of a Mozart concerto and occasionally performing in a Star Trek uniform. Yet he’s also known for bringing power and poetry to the keyboard literature, and today on Soundcheck, the pianist joins host John Schaefer in advance of his New York Philharmonic debut. Also on the show, theater critic Clive Barnes discusses a major tribute taking place at the Lincoln Center Festival, marking the centenary of the birth of English choreographer Frederick Ashton. The series will feature four of the world's leading ballet companies, including England's Birmingham Royal Ballet and The Royal Ballet, The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago and Japan's K-Ballet Company.

Ottawa, 5 August, 1999 - The Canada Council for the Arts is pleased to announce that Lucille Chung is the recipient of the 1999 Virginia Parker Prize. The prize, worth $25,000, will be presented to her during a concert in Longueuil, Qu©bec, on October 7, 1999. Originally known as the Virginia P. Moore Prize, the Virginia Parker Prize was established in 1982 by the late Colonel T.A.G. Moore and his wife, Virginia P. Moore.
