1. Who was Paderewski? November 6th marks the anniversary of the birth of the most famous and popular pianist of all times - Ignacy Jan PADEREWSKI (1860-1941). Although discouraged by his teachers from becoming a pianist, he launched his artistic career in 1885 and literally swept the world with his playing and his dynamic personality. In 1932 American president Franklin Delano Roosevelt called him a Modern Immortal and two years later in a book written by author Charles Phillips, The Story of a Modern Immortal, the introduction began as follows, "It is difficult to write of Paderewski without emotion. Statesman, orator, pianist and composer, he is a superlative man, and his genius transcends that of anyone I have ever known. Those of us who love Poland are glad that she can claim him as a son, but let her always remember that Ignace Jan Paderewski belongs to all mankind." Yes, here was a personality that was not one in a million, but perhaps one in a century; an "artist of such a distinctly pronounced individuality as to be an exceedingly rare occurence -indeed - phenomenal." Paderewski was a genius, an intellectual, a "statesman par excellence;" a beautiful orator in a language that was not his; a linguist who spoke no less than seven languages fluently; a great musician; a patriot; and most of all, a humanitarian who was so generous that every act of kindness to him was always returned manifold.

by David Dubal Ignaz Jan Paderewski was born on 6th November 1860 in Podolia, an isolated region of the Russian partition of Poland. As a child he had two dreams: to become a pianist and to be of service to Poland. Both dreams would be fulfilled far beyond his wildest expectation.
Patriotism was engendered early, especially knowing his father was in prison for a time because of participation in the failed 1863 Polish uprising against the Czar. The boy's early piano teachers were poor and ineffective, and Paderewski later complained, "I did not know how to practise. I did not get even the first rudiments of piano technique." At twelve he was taken to Warsaw where he worked diligently, learning harmony, piano and attempting to play flute and trombone. By the age of sixteen he was composing, but he was still dissatisfied with his work at the piano. Half-heartedly he finished his studies at the Institute of Music, receiving his diploma in 1878, for which he performed with the school orchestra the still-new Grieg Concerto.
Forced to earn a living, the eighteen-year-old youth taught, wrote some piano pieces, and two years later completed his Violin Sonata which Brahms, reading through it five years later, called "a very fine concert sonata."

The studio was on the top floor of the Aeolian Hall in central London, although there was also a Duo-Art studio in New York. Seated to the left of the piano is the British Duo-Art recording producer, Reginald Reynolds, who can be seen operating two large dials that formed part of the dynamic recording mechanism.

Ernesto Drangosch (1882-1925) Meet the Argentine Composers A Genius Rediscovered
Little is known about Ernesto Drangosch, a virtuoso pianist, composer, conductor, pedagogue born in Buenos Aires on January 22, 1882, and died on June 26, 1925. An incredibly talented, multi-faceted personality, his life was totally devoted to every aspect of music.
His parents came from Germany but he was Argentinian by birth. When he was a child he used to repeat by ear every note his brother played during his piano lessons at home in Buenos Aires. His father, Carlos Drangosch, the owner of an important music store in Buenos Aires, was so impressed by little Ernesto’s natural gifts that he immediately sent him to a Professor Collin, a European piano teacher who, as was the case in all of the American continent, played a major role in the early development of music schools in this part of the world.
