NSU orchestra performs Peter and the Wolf By Bob Pore - Campus Reporter On Nov. 18 at 4:00 p.m., the University Civic Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Alexander Fokkens, performed Peter and the Wolf by Sergey Prokofiev, and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto Peter and the Wolf However, that was not the case for Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto . The french horns were sometimes a little too loud and would drown out the rest of the orchestra. Despite this, they could play quietly when necessary, and the piano soloist, John Owings, could always be heard. Owings is a magnificent pianist, and he played the solo part very well, always managing to keep up with the pace in the first and third movements. A big, beautiful new Steinway piano arrived on campus mid-July, thanks to a generous donation from an alum and her husband. The piano is housed in a small room off the auditorium stage, with carefully controlled temperature and humidity. The piano has a retail price of nearly $90,000, but Dordt was able to acquire it for about $75,000 with its educational discount. January 2000 Blind Artists and Friends Concert Sunday, October 10, 1999 To benefit: The Foundation Fighting Blindness Maryland Affiliate and Maryland Arts Access Blind Artists and Friends Concert The annual event that showcases the talents and features some extraordinary abilities of those with disabilities. Proceeds from this concert will go toward providing audio description for visually handicapped individuals attending theatre events and to help fund research and support programs of The Foundation Fighting Blindness. The Foundation Fighting Blindness Maryland Affiliate Who We Are The Foundation Fighting Blindness (the Foundation) is a national eye research organization headquartered in Hunt Valley, Maryland. The Foundation funds research projects to find the causes, treatments, preventions and cures for the retinal degenerative diseases that affect six million Americans who are going blind due to retinitis pigmentosa (RP), macular degeneration, Usher syndrome and other related retinal diseases diseases that know no boundaries of age, social class, race or geography. First: many of the tunes are by Tveitt or belong to the Tveitt family. That said, every one of them is drenched in authentic Hardanger feeling; the first suite consists of fifteen tunes creating miniature tone pictures which are unconnected but the fourth suite tells the tale of a wedding from wooing to a bridal voyage in a boat across a fjord to the raucous (and often obscene if we could have the words) post-wedding celebration (one segment is titled "Drunken Talk - Homage to Atonality"). The orchestration is very varied and extremely colorful; sure to appeal to lovers of Bartók and Kodály and Vaughan Williams. Royal Scottish National Orchestra; Bjarte Engeset. Rubbra's symphonies are straightforward in their musical language but always put development, melodic and polyphonic growth ahead of such niceties as orchestral color. The Third dates from 1939 and has been called "outwardly the most genial and relaxed" of the symphonies whose third movement adagio tranquillo carries the greatest depth of feeling. The Seventh (1957) has a powerful opening, seemingly evocative of the force of nature; it mines simple ideas for all they are worth and closes with an expressive passacaglia and fugue.
