GRIFFES Ivo Kaltchev, piano. Gega New CD 123, 1998. One compact disc. Of all the might-have-beens in American music, few are more poignant than the case of Charles Tomlinson Griffes (1884-1920), who died after a short and undeservedly obscure career in music. Although trained in Germany, Griffes turned increasingly to French models for inspiration during his brief maturity, producing some fine works with a certain originality. Originality, however, is not the first impression left by Ivo Kaltchev's Griffes disc. The first two of the four Roman Sketches, Op. 7 , "The White Peacock" and "Nightfall" are overly indebted to Debussy. "The Fountain of Acqua Paola" opens with a fine American-sounding melody, but then descends into standard late-Romantic note-spinning. Things pick up considerably with the last piece in this set; "Clouds" is music of genuine beauty, of wispy and a bit lightweight. "The Pleasure Dome of Kubla Khan," in its orchestral setting, was among the few works of Griffes to achieve some attention in his lifetime. In the original piano version, its dark opening brings Mussorgsky to mind, and Griffes works this idiom effectively with some ominous left-hand passages. Bulgarian pianist Kaltchev digs deep into the Slavic darkness of these measures, and to great effect. So, too, in the brooding "A Winter Landscape," heard here in its world premiere recording. "Legend" has a strong individual stamp; "De Profundis" is a less compelling, if still craftsmanly, essay in the Romantic style. The most ambitious work on the disc, the

But listen carefully, and you will see the very careful and firm craftmanship of the composer; how the violin lines turn and sway dreamily, intensely over its carefully crafted piano accompaniment. And in such dedicated and sincere playing from violinst Fritz Gearhart and pianist John Owings. It would seem that this is a distinguishing point about Porter's music here. It at first sounds just like some late Romantic work, but often veers away into harmonies and gestures which belie something more modern. The performances here have this way of being at times restlessly Romantic and emotional, yet with turns of something more deliberate and structured, which I find suits this music very appropriately. The disc begins with three earlier one-movement works from 1919. First is the 61/2-minute Sonata in D minor - Romantic in tone, no doubt, yearning, sweet and a very pleasant introduction to Porter's world. Gearhart plays with graceful sincerity and noble passion, in music which is regal yet carefree. There is perhaps some Brahms, something Beethoven, something Schubert.

Triptych: Images and Sound Tapestries by William Thomas Walker The NC Museum of Art's popular Sights and Sounds on Sundays series, given in partnership with the Raleigh Chamber Music Guild, offered a fine program of mostly contemporary American music, presented by the eclectic musical group Triptych, in the well-filled NCMA auditorium on the afternoon of October 28. The "Sights" for this concert were black and white photographs that added less to the performance than is usual in this series. Knoxville: Summer of 1915 . The second movement begins with the cello in the higher register singing a mournful tune, followed by muted piano accompaniment. The two instruments built to a heartfelt intensity. The last movement is playful and dance-like. The original version of Appalachian Ditties and Dances can be heard in a performance by Eric Larsen and Stephen Shipps on an Albany CD) Toppin gave a more audience-friendly sample of her vocalism in three Gershwin songs. Witty word play and class distinctions were at the heart of "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off.".Her warm, full middle and lower ranges were ideal in a nicely paced "Summertime." The familiar "By Strauss" (1936) was playful, with trills and splendid high notes at the end. Fritz Gearhart and Owings gave a vital reading of the Suite for Violin and Piano by William Grant Still. The first movement, marked "Majestically" was inspired by an African dancer, opening with somber piano chords leading to a faster section, and a slower hymn-like close. The second movement featured a soulful song for the violin with high exposed notes displaying Gearhart's precise intonation. He also interpolated a cadenza by Louis Kaufman, transcribed from a broadcast of Still's orchestral version of the piece not included in Gearhart's fine Koch recording of the Suite. The last movement, marked "Rhythmically and humorously," was full of sassy writing for the violin and plenty of pyrotechnics.

International Piano Competition For Outstanding Amateurs June 2002 On June 2nd, I went to Fort Worth to compete in the 3rd International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs, sponsored by the Van Cliburn Foundation. My parents accompanied me this time, as they did during the first competition in 1999. After we arrived at the airport, we went straight to Texas Christian University so that I could register and receive my welcome package. I received a warm welcome from the volunteers at Waits Hall who remembered me from last time. I then went to check in at the hotel and to get ready for the party at the Railhead Smokehouse, just down the road. It was good to see many friends at the party from previous competitions. There were quite a few new contestants this time. I met some of the Cliburn staff at the party. The food consisted of roast turkey or brisket with vegetables. It was very nice to see Stephen Hubbard, Professor of Electrical Engineering at Clemson University again. He showed me a photograph of his new 8 month old son sitting at the piano, and I asked him if he could play the Beethoven Opus 111 sonata yet. It was also good to see Viktors Berstis and to hear the latest recordings of his dog Daisy, singing to the Chopin 3rd Scherzo and Fantasy Impromptu. The next morning I went to practice at Waits Hall. This had been modernized and re-decorated since last time. Each practice room had a new upright piano. This was a big improvement over the pianos in 2000 that were older and mostly out of tune. I was given a three hour practice time, and this was longer than I needed. I can never play for this long without several breaks.
