The complete ten violin-piano sonatas in a set of CDs is unusual enough, but to offer all of them in a series of live performances taped in Paris is unique to say the least. The documentary is really a very compelling music appreciation tour of the ten sonatas as well as being an interesting interview with Mutter and her able pianist. (I hesitate to call him an accompanist because actually these works are often credited as the Piano-Violin Sonatas - indicating that Beethoven intended for the two instruments to have equal say in the music.) The musical world inhabited by these works evolves tremendously during the course of the ten sonatas. It begins in the world of Haydn and Mozart, with perhaps a bit more depth than either but still encased in the Classic structures and development of themes. These were the instruments most familiar to Beethoven and he was able to put them thru their paces with great skill and a variety of effects. His deafness was coming on in some of the middle sonatas but his familiarity with the instruments kept his composing from being affected. The Spring Sonata (No. 5) is one of only two of the works with a subtitle. Mutter stresses the fresh qualities of the first movement's main theme, and the Adagio is famous for its own glorious melody. The other titled sonata is No. 9, the "Kreutzer." This 46 minute epic work is full of virtuoso improvisatory passages created for its original intended performer, a mulatto violinist named Bridgetower.

Time was, not so long ago, that a self-respecting music connoisseur would not dare to admit to listening to the music of these two arch-romantic retrogrades. Now that it is politically correct (almost) to enjoy this stuff (let's not overdo it, now), these two populists garner respect from even the musicological intelligentsia. Grieg, after all, was something of a folklorist, a precursor to Bartok, Copland et. al., and good old Rocky, an early product of Freudian psychoanalysis, was a more complicated figure than the simple, sentimental soul we thought he was. The true believers will just chuckle at these stylistic shifts of climate. The honest, richly melodic, passionate music of these two masters has easily weathered the storms of fashion, and sounds as strong and focused as ever. The cello sonatas of both composers are especially gorgeous, and it is a treat to get them both on one program. As a part of the Curtis Alumni Series, cellist Wendy Warner and pianist Lambert Orkis will play the works in a benefit for the school (they are also recording the program for the Erato label). She performed all ten violin sonatas of Ludwig van Beethoven on a world tour with the pianist Lambert Orkis. It was a climax in the longtime collaboration between the two artists. The live recording of the sonatas was released in fall 1998, while the tour was still underway. For this recording, the two artists won a prestigious Grammy Award in February 2000. Anne-Sophie Mutter's dazzling career began when the thirteen-year-old girl caught the attention of Herbert von Karajan, who promptly hired her to concertize with the Berlin Philharmonic. Today she numbers among the greatest violinists in the world. Anne-Sophie Mutter and Lambert Orkis are without a doubt the perfect duo to perform the greatest violin sonatas by the greatest composer in the history of music. Add that to a beautifully produced set of Deutsche Grammophon cd’s of the highest standards, and you have recordings that will be a centerpiece of any classical music collection. It is one of the centerpieces of my collection, which means a great deal since it has competition from over 3,500 other classical cd’s. Writing this review is actually more difficult than I considered it would be, as the main dilemma isn’t what to write, but how much. You see, these recordings present the listener so much, that one could write about their offerings for a longer period than most Epinions members would care to read. Therefore, I have decided to discuss the recordings in broader terms, with some references to individual compositions.

At this point, however, the sonata as a complete musical object hasn't solidified in my mind. The finale, delightful in itself, especially doesn't seem to fit in yet with the other two movements. Perhaps repeated listenings will clarify its place in the rhetorical structure. As I say, Orkis does these things so well, I don't even think of them as new music, but as music.
