Japanese Pianist Opens WFU's Secrest Artist Series
By Cheryl Walker
Sept. 3, 1998 Wake Forest University's 1998-99 Secrest Artists Series will open Friday, Sept. 18, with Chitose Okashiro, a Japanese-born pianist who has recently received accolades for her recordings of music by the Russian composer Scriabin. Okashiro will perform at 8 p.m. in Brendle Recital Hall. Her program will include Mozart's "Sonata in B-flat Major," preludes by Claude Debussy and etudes by Scriabin. She will conclude the program with symphonic etudes by Robert Schumann. The New York Times described Okashiro as "an appealing colorist," while a reviewer from the American Record Guide wrote, "I'm still innocent enough to sit in open-mouthed awe at something like Chitose Okashiro's consummate technical mastery." A graduate of The Juilliard School and The Manhattan School of Music, Okashiro records exclusively for Pro Piano Records. She is currently at work on her sixth release, which features piano transcriptions of Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" and two other operas. Okashiro was the 1993 Pro Piano Artist of the Year and a major prize-winner at the 1993 International Chopin Competition. She is known for her excellence as a recording artist, a performer and a record producer.

T ranscribing music composed for other instruments or for ensembles of instruments for the piano has been around for a long time. One of the most famous transcribers, Johann Sebastian Bach, transcribed a number of concerti by Vivaldi for organ as well as the works of others and his own from one instrument or ensemble to another. This kind of borrowing and rewriting maintained some popularity for the next few centuries after Bach. In the late 19 th and the early 20 th century, transcriptions for piano became very popular. This period, a golden age of pianism, established the piano as a kind of precursor to the phonograph. Having a piano in the parlor was almost a necessity for admission to the genteel middle class. It was also a way of bringing culture into the home. For good reason, too was the piano the instrument of choice. The piano had huge advantages over other instruments. Only one instrument allowed a performer to cover most of the notes any orchestra could play. It also lent itself to reasonable sound no matter how much of a neophyte the pianist might be. With improvements to the action, it became capable of the very loud sound we know today, so that it also became a fixture in schools, town halls, taverns and church halls. During this period, there were many accomplished pianists. As a result, transcribing great symphonic works for piano became a way of spreading symphonic music throughout the pre-phonograph world without the expense of a full orchestra. Many of these transcriptions are still being played. One example is particularly famous: Liszt's transcription of Beethoven's ninth symphony, which is still performed. Now, a new generation of piano virtuosi, such as Stephen Hough, Arcadi Volodos and Marc-André Hamelin have dug through the archives and resurrected a number of great transcriptions by such composers as Busoni and Rachmaninoff. Hamelin, Volodos and others are also creating their own brilliant transcriptions.

(And the Motion Picture Academy recognized that.) The plot concerning a family of superheros who for various reasons must keep their powers under cover and act like normal people opens up all sort of hilarious possibilities. The celebrity voices of the characters are perfect, as is the music of Giacchino - for the film. Unfortunately, it fails to stand on its own because it is a cornball mishmash parody of James Bond music and will soon get on the nerves of even Bond fanatics.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 - 1791) Category : Classical - Instrumental This set of the almost complete Mozart sonatas (Kraus skipped the F major, K.533) was recorded by the Haydn Society in 1954. The first most notable thing about these new transfers by Music and Arts is just how clear the sound has become. For a moment, I was actually wondering if this was in stereo or mono! Background hiss has been reduced to an unobtrusive minimum, passage work emerges with a freshness, warmth and clarity surprising for a recording made in mono sound in the early 50s, with no clangy or brittle quality at all. Moving to the performances, there is just so much to say about them that it is best left to the ear of the individual listener to decide and to discover for himself. Yes, discovery is just the word to describe each time one listens to these CDs, and what a journey this proves to be, right from the earliest sonatas here, which emerge with not just youthfulness but wide-eyed innocence as well. Her playing is distinguished by nobility, grace and refinement. It would not be accurate to call these fragile readings in the way many of today's female pianists' performances turn out to be, nor is Kraus an overwhelming authoritarian just as Sviatoslav Richter was in such repertoire. Kraus is assertive yet gracious without ever being polite and overly 'correct'; individual, and also highly intelligent what a great hostess she makes as she invites you into her world and takes you on an eye-opening tour of this core Mozartian repertoire.

Pianist Chitose Okashiro will perform a concert 8 p.m. Sept. 18 in Brendle Recital Hall.
Tired of the cramped concert atmosphere of Ziggy's? Ready for a more classical beat? Looking for a more relaxing and romantic setting? How would you like to spend an evening being entertained by a world-renowned musician? And most importantly, it's free!
The Secrest Artist Series opens with Chitose Okashiro, a Japanese pianist who has recently gained worldwide acclaim.
Chitose Okashiro performs regularly in recitals and concerts throughout Japan and North America. She is hailed in the press with such comments as "a young artist of genius in the true sense of the word" (Art Record; Japan); "unusually colorful and richly varied readings ... shade her sound in the manner of a Renoir pastel." Even fellow pianists are singing her praises. Michel Block said Chitose Okashiro is " ... talented, courageous and intelligent; (she) embodies the essence of the coming generation of keyboard redeemers: a pianist who is true to her own self and her art."
Chitose Okashiro is graduate of the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music, and she records exclusively for Pro Piano Records. She is working on her sixth release featuring piano transcriptions of Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" and two other operas. Her program Sept. 18 will include Mozart's "Sonata in B-flat Major" and selections from Debussy, Scriabin and Schumann.
