Nyaho/Garcia Piano Duo to Perform "Music From Around the World" in Free Concert Feb. 18 at Centenary College's Hurley School of Music
Nyaho/Garcia Piano Duo SHREVEPORT, LA "Music From Around the World" will be presented by the Nyaho/Garcia Piano Duo at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18 in Centenary College's Hurley School of Music Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the general public. William Chapman Nyaho and Susie Garcia, musicians and teachers in residence at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, have combined their talents into an international touring duo known for its energetic and compelling performances, specializing in both the standard repertoire and newly composed works. Drawing from their extensive knowledge of the repertoire, Nyaho and Garcia create fascinating programs that not only entertain but educate diverse audiences. The highlight of this particular event is the inclusion of works outside the European classical tradition with special emphasis on music of the Americas by women and minority composers. The duo has been performing for several years now, and recently released its first compact disc recording of the complete transcriptions of Aaron Copland for two pianos with Centaur Records.

Advanced. A most welcome addition to Dover's publications is Darius Milhaud's duet version of Le Boeuf sur le Toit. This score, which has been difficult to obtain in the past, is reproduced beautifully in this Dover version. The reproduction is that of the 1920 score. The publication is especially significant because Milhaud's music, somewhat underrated and underrepresented in the latter part of the twentieth century, is experiencing a renaissance. Milhaud, who calls this twenty-minute work a Cinema-Symphony on South American Tunes, says, "Still haunted by my memories of Brazil, I assembled a few popular melodies, tangos, maxixes, sambas and even a Portuguese fado and transcribed them with a rondo-like theme recurring between each successive pair. I called this fantasia Le Boeuf sur le Toit, which was the title of a Brazilian popular song. I thought that the character of this music might make it suitable for an accompaniment to one of Charlie Chaplin's films."

Music
Sometimes the best songs almost write themselves.
Bill Anderson , Quoted in Criswell Freeman The Book of Country Music Wisdom Punk is not just the sound, the music. Punk is a life-style. There are a lot of bands around who claim to be punk and they only play the music, they have no clue what it's all about. It's a life-style I chose for myself.
Billie Joe Armstrong New York Rock magazine (April 1998). Interview with Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day If you play a tune and a person don't tap their feet, don't play the tune.
William James "Count" Basie It's the way you play that makes it. . . . Play like you play. Play like you think, and then you got it, if you're going to get it. And whatever you get, that's you, so that's your story.
William James "Count" Basie Good Morning Blues: The Autobiography of Count Basie Of course, there are a lot of ways you can treat the blues, but it will still be the blues.
William James "Count" Basie Good Morning Blues: The Autobiography of Count Basie Piper, pipe that song again!
William Blake Songs of Innocence (1789). Introduction

http://allthingswilliam.com/purpose.html
Purpose
I always get back to the question, is it really necessary that men should consume so much of their bodily and mental energies in the machinery of civilised life? The world seems to me to do much of its toil for that which is not in any sense bread. Again, does not the latent feeling that much of their striving is to no purpose tend to infuse large quantities of sham into men's work?
William Allingham A Diary (1907). Chapter 6: 1864 entry We are the children of chaos, and the deep structure of change is decay. At root there is only corruption, and the unstemmable tide of chaos. Gone is purpose; all there is left is direction. This is the bleakness we have to accept as we peer deeply and dispassionately into the heart of the Universe. Yet when we look around and see beauty, when we look within and experience conciousness, and when we participate in the delights of life, we know in our hearts that the heart of the Universe is richer by far. But that is sentiment, and is not what we should know in our minds.
Peter William (P.W.) Atkins
