Guiomar Novaes
Her Life
G Antonietta Rudge , another Brazilian pianist who made an international career in Europe in the beginning of the century and whom Artur Rubinstein considered as one of his musical passions.
In Brazil Mme. Novaes married the Brazilian architect Octavio Pinto, who was probably her greatest admirer. They had two children, Ana Maria and Luiz Octavio. Octavio Pinto was an architect, but also a composer. His piano suite Scenas Infantis (Memories of Childhood), published by G. Schirmer, was recorded by his wife and often played as encore in her recitals. Mme. Novaes was invited by Queen Elizabeth II to play a recital at the opening season of Queen Elizabeth Hall in London on April 30, 1967; the program included works by Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and Debussy and encores by Villa-Lobos, Purcell and Vuillemin.
Her Recordings
On RCA Victor
Mme. Novaes's old 78 recordings on RCA are now available on a single CD called GUIOMAR NOVAES - THE COMPLETE VICTOR 78s. That CD was released by (CD 702) I. Philipp - Feux-Follets Op. 24 #3 - rec. 27 June 1919

Antonietta Rudge
Left to right: Souza Lima, Guiomar Novaes and Antonietta Rudge in Rio in May, 1959, playing Bach's Concerto for 3 pianos and orchestra.
Her life
A Soon she would become one of the foremost Brazilian pianists of her generation. Her repertoire was huge. It is said that she could play by heart the 48 Preludes and Fugues of Bach's Well Tempered Clavier and transpose all of them into any key. Her playing had an almost masculine strength, which allowed her to master works by Alkan, Liszt and even Balakirev's Islamey Antonietta Rudge married Charles Miller, an Englishman who introduced soccer in Brazil, and travelled to Europe, where she had an appointment with an agent in London. He asked her to play something and was asked back what at all did he want her to play for him; her repertoire included anything one might think of. Immediately the agent booked her a concert tour. She played in England, France, Germany, with extremely favorable reviews by the critics. There are 78 rpm. discs with around 35 recordings that she made during her early years. Her only daughter still had all those discs; now some of them are being reamastered for future release on CD. In Brazil she was highly admired by Artur Rubinstein (who mentioned her in his memois), who used to make concert tours in South America often. Rubinstein said to the poet Menotti del Picchia, who later became Mme. Rudge's second husband and her greatest passion: "I have three loves: Chopin, Beethoven and Antonietta Rudge playing Beethoven and Chopin; now, to those loves I add the love I have for my wife" (Rubinstein had just got married)".
