In Quest of Spirit These insights sounded in the five works heard at the concert. The longest piece, Song Offerings Gitanjali . The instrumental parts glistened at the concert, but the impressive singing did not match the profundity of the texts in some parts. The soprano writing, which emphasizes very high notes as well as the passaggio transitional range, requires non-standard techniques of vibrato. Judith Bettina seemed to sacrifice details of vibrato (specified in the score) in favor of emotional projection (as didPenelope Walmsley-Clark in the Nimbus recording). Tombeau de Messiaen (1994), for piano and DAT tape, received a spirited performance by pianist Marilyn Nonken. The work blends the live (equal-tempered) piano with pre-recorded piano sounds tuned to twelve different harmonic series. Harvey works with the ambiguity of the two tunings through skillful transitions and overlapping. If I understand correctly, he sees ambiguity as a way of spiritually transcending duality. Soon thereafter, Feldman showed a string quartet he had been writing to Cage. Cage's enthusiasm for this work, and delight in Feldman's being unable to explain "how" he had written it, gave Feldman an all important "permission" to follow his intuition. This period of time marks the beginning of Feldman's "graph music", so named because it was written on graph paper, but also because it is part of a larger movement in 20th century music during which music notation departed from the traditional staff notation and began to incorporate a great deal of graphic symbols.

MICHAEL FINNISSY, composer/pianist Michael Finnissy was born in Tulse Hill, London in 1946. He was a Foundation Scholar at the Royal College of Music, London, where he studied composition with Bernard Stevens and Humphrey Searle, and piano with Edwin Benbow and Ian Lake. Afterwards, he studied in Italy with Roman Vlad. Finnissy created the music department of the London School of Contemporary Dance, and has been associated as composer with many British dance companies including London Contemporary Dance Theatre, Ballet Rambert, Strider, and Second Stride. He has taught at Dartington Summer School, Winchester College, the junior department of the Royal College of Music, Chelsea College of Art, and is guest lecturer at many colleges and universities. He has also been musician in residence to the Victorian College of the Arts, the City of Caulfield in Australia, and the East London Late Starters Orchestra. In 1999 he was made Professor of Composition at the University of Southampton. In 1990 Finnissy was appointed President of the International Society of Contemporary Music. He was re-elected in 1993, and in 1998 was made an honorary member of the ISCM. In 1999 he was been appointed Senior Fellow of the KBC-chair in New Music at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium for two years. March 19, Wednesday 8:00 p.m. Concert I: ECU New Music Camerata Quatuor pour le fin de temps (Quartet for the End of Time), by Olivier Messiaen featuring Christopher Grymes , clarinet; Ara Gregorian , violin; Kelley Mikkelsen , 'cello; and Guest Artist Peter Henderson, piano. This landmark work of the 20th century, the only work performed on this evening's program, will be introduced by Guest Scholar Dr. James Grymes , Musicologist on the faculty of UNC-Charlotte.
