AT THE PIANO – THE AUTHOR IN PERSON! It is no secret that many composers began their music career by giving piano lessons, and at times achieved quite impressive results in the performing line of work. Sergei Prokofiev graduated from St.Petersburg Conservatoire in two specializations. In the piano class his Professor was well-known pianist Anna Yesipova, who shone on the major European stages in the early 20th century. Her playing was both poetic and tremulously romantic. However, Prokofiev was nothing like Yesipova: his performing style was distinctly impulsive, unyielding and even aggressive. There was a great degree of irony and blazonry in everything the young pianist did. Not all Conservatoire Professors approved of Sergei Prokofiev’s artistic style. But they were unanimous in putting him down as a striking personality with a brilliant future ahead. Besides the Piano Department Diploma, this young idoloclast received the Anton Rubinstein prize – a superb “Bekhstein” piano! The critics were not unanimous in their perception of Prokofiev’s playing. While some raved over the energy and drive displayed by the pianist, others found his style distastefully vulgar. This is what they wrote of Prokofiev the pianist in America: “Fingers of steel, wrists of steel, steel muscles, steel shoulders, steel forearms – it’s a steel Trust!”
