Up to some year ago we would have added "Soviet". But we are today a little bit in embarrassment defining this man, born in Ukraine from German father and Polish mother, who lived in Pietrograd, Kiev, Georgia and Moscow, pupil of Leopold Godowsky , merely a Russian. Perhaps it is more correct to consider him as belonging to a universal culture. His students, of all nationalities, are scattered around the whole world: United States, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Israel, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Japan. Here, in an unpublished photo, Neuhaus is surrounded by students of various countries of the world. From left to the right: Gérard Frémy (France), Gabriel Amiras (Romania), Snezhanka Barova (Bulgaria), Maria Vlad (Romania), Lenina Popova (Russia), Maria Kruscelnycka. Leopold Godowsky was one of my friends and my best Teacher, too. I can recollect my first meeting with such a beautiful pianist. Upon suggestion of F.M. Blumenfel'd - one of the estimators of his talent - my father sent me to him in Berlin in order to follow his piano classes. This small, chubby but lively man spoke me in a very plain way. After he heard my performance of the F minor Chopin's Piano Concert, he told me: "You have your own personality, and I will keep it". Godowsky used to talk very little with his pupils during his lessons, and even more seldom about performance techniques. Most of his pupils - coming from any corner of the world - were thinking that the Maestro, the great virtuoso, would have initiated them to the secrets of the technical mastery - but they would have been disappointed. During his lessons Godowsky was talking only about music. This photo of L.Godowsky appears at page 75 of the third volume in Russian language devoted to Neuhaus "Genrich Nejgauz. Vospominanija. There are too many to name and all of them are different. To me the question: "Who's best?" which usually intrigues the general public and is precisely why people throng to all kinds of competitions, seems an idle one. Who's "best" - Bach, Mozart, Beethoven or Brahms? Pushkin, Dante, Goethe or Shakespeare? Raphael, Velazquez, El Greco or Titian? Frankly, I don't know. In the world of physical reality we can positively state that Elbrus is the highest peak in the Caucasus and Mont Blanc the highest in the Alps. These things can be measured. Take the races: horse No. 1 beats horse No. 2 by a quarter of a head. This is an actual happening and can be measured (although I could never understand why this "quarter of a head" should rouse the spectators to such a pitch of excitement). But how can we measure accurately the qualitative differences of phenomena in the spiritual world, how can we determine their "height" as we determine the height of Elbrus or Gauri Sankar? For art is perceived not only intellectually ("measurably") but also emotionally, or in other words "non-rationally". The emotional approach to art is not a debatable subject because of the famous maxim that "tastes differ". (Personally, I think it's most debatable since tastes can be good or bad.)

His father, Theophile, was an organist and gave the young Sviatoslav his early musical training. Richter’s mother, Anna, was a talented artist who loved music and was related to the Swedish soprano Jenny Lind. The young Richter was essentially self-taught and developed his exceptional technique by playing whatever music he liked. By the age of eight he was playing opera scores, including the music of Richard Wagner. He had the ability to memorize any music at sight. Richter grew up in Odessa, where his father taught at the Conservatory. Also growing up in Odessa at the same time were Emil Gilels and David Oistrakh, who would later become Richter’s chamber-music partner. During these years he was a “repetiteur,” or rehearsal pianist, in Odessa. His debut as a soloist came on February 19, 1934, at the Odessa House of Engineers. The program included the Chopin Ballade no. 4, Polonaise-fantaisie, and E Major Scherzo, as well as a selection of Nocturnes, Etudes, and Preludes, all difficult pieces. The recital was a great success and Richter’s career as virtuoso was under way.

His strongest 'competitor' is perhaps Vladimir Horowitz, but his weak point is the width of repertoire. Other Austro-German pianists like Backhaus Rudolf Serkin and Kempff are not comparable to Richter in this respect, too. Sviatoslav Teofilovich Richter was born in Zhitomir, in Ukraine. His father(Teofil) learned piano and organ in Vienna Conservatory, but moved to Ukraine because of the illegal duel. He married one of his pupil. But our young Slava did not learn much from his father. He almost taught himself. We can't know the excat reason, but I guess there are some clue in Heinrich Neuhaus's 'The Art of piano playing'; Piano teachers are so busy teaching his pupils as to have little time for their own children. They are a symbol of the privacy and comfort of many wealthier Russian homes and reflect their style of life in the 19th century. Though Tchaikovsky's piano miniatures were addressed mostly to nobles and prosperous townsfolk, his music speaks to everyone. Intimate and sincere, with rich melodies and simple to perform, the music gained great popularity for the composer. This album combines Tchaikovsky piano miniatures from Op. 5, 7, 10, 19, 40, 51 and 72. But there were always inner constraints or health reasons, and ultimately it has not harmed his reputation as one of the world's finest pianists. As a boy, Richter had only sporadic piano lessons, yet a natural, insatiable curiosity about everything to do with music helped him on his way until he began as a repetiteur at the Odessa Opera when he was eighteen.
