ON THE JOB The Keys to Carnegie Hall Winning the Van Cliburn gold medal gets your foot in the door. by Ginny McCormick
Every so often Jon Nakamatsu has to pinch himself. Is he really a concert pianist touring the globe and performing at Carnegie Hall? An artist whose work has been described by a New York Times in company with a story on James Michener? Nakamatsu says he was stunned by the standing ovations he received during the two-week competition in Texas. Fans gave him a toy armadillo for luck. Fort Worth Star-Telegram The prize opened doors. Besides winning $20,000 in cash and a $10,000 wardrobe allowance, Cliburn medalists are sent on a two-year concert tour in the United States and Europe. They play with orchestras and chamber groups and give solo recitals, capped by a date at Carnegie Hall. Chicago Tribune

Jon Nakamatsu, Surprise Van Cliburn Winner, to be Honored at Japanese American National Museum Dinner
Los Angeles Even his piano teacher, Marina Derryberry, was surprised when Jon Nakamatsu earned the Gold Medal at the 10th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition earlier this year in Fort Worth, Texas. And Derryberry has been instructing Nakamatsu since he was six years old. Nakamatsu and NBC-TV's "Today" News Anchor Ann Curry will become the first recipients of the Japanese American National Museum's Awards for Excellence when they will be honored at the institution's Annual Dinner on Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Century Plaza Hotel. The dinner's theme is "Building New Traditions: Recognizing Japanese American Excellence". The Museum will also present its Corporate Leadership Awards to Mikasa and Kenwood and will give special recognition to the late Noby Yamakoshi, a Museum Trustee. Besides being honored, Nakamatsu will perform at the dinner. Now 29, Jon became only the third American in 36 years to earn the Van Cliburn gold medal and the first in 16 years. More dramatically, Nakamatsu was the only entrant in the competition to not study at a music conservatory or even major in music in college. Nakamatsu majored in German studies at Stanford and earned his masters degree in education. For the past six years, he has earned his living as a German teacher at St. Francis High School in Mountain View, California. Unlike most of his competitors, Jon has had just two piano teachers in his life: Derryberry since 1974 and Karl Ulrich Schnabel since 1977.

Cliburn Winner John Nakamatsu Is New Voices Pianist March 19
He's only the third American to win the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. John Nakamatsu, a Californian, won the gold medal last June, pocketed $20,000 and the right to scores of concert recital days. Nebraskans can judge Nakamatsu's superb talent for themselves when he plays a solo recital concert at 8 p.m. March 19 in Kimball Hall as part of the Lied Center for Performing Arts' New Voices series. In addition to supporting performances by emerging artists, New Voices programs are designed to incorporate meaningful outreach experiences, targeted toward audiences members aged 12 to 21. Nakamatsu, a native Californian, has studied piano with the same teacher since the age of 6. He is unusual in that he did not attend a music conservatory - he is a graduate of Stanford University - and he majored not in music, but in German. Until this year, he was teaching high school German in Mountain View, Calif. Always a serious musician, the 28-year-old pianist said he watched the quadrennial competitions as a child and dreamed of being the winner. While a dedicated teacher, his goal is to earn his living as a concert pianist. As the Cliburn winner, he is on his way.

BY DOUGLAS McLENNAN W riting about last summer's Van Cliburn Competition, Time dubbed it the "Gong Show" of classical music. So much for the world's top international piano contest, the once-every-four-years gathering of young virtuosos sometimes referred to as the Olympics of classical music. Such scorn is probably an accurate reflection of the esteem piano contests are held in these days. The rap against competitions is that they produce bland, offend-no-one performers who have leeched out the personality from their playing. In the past, big techniques have won out over style, and individualized artistry has seldom been rewarded.
