Exhibiting musical talent while still very young, he began (at age 11) private composition studies with John Verrall and piano lessons with Berthe Poncy Jacobson at the University of Washington. He continued to perform extensively in the Seattle area and throughout the Northwest. Bolcom earned his B.A. from the University of Washington in 1958, studied with Darius Milhaud at Mills College in California and at the Paris Conservatoire de Musique, and earned a doctorate in composition in 1964 from Stanford University, where he worked with Leland Smith. Returning to the Paris Conservatoire, he won the 2e Prix in Composition in 1965. While in Europe he began writing stage scores for theaters in West Germany, continuing at Stanford University, in Memphis, Tennessee, at Lincoln Center/New York, and the Yale Repertory Theater. (Photo: Ellen Appel) Cliburn Winner John Nakamatsu Is New Voices Pianist March 19 He's only the third American to win the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. John Nakamatsu, a Californian, won the gold medal last June, pocketed $20,000 and the right to scores of concert recital days. Nebraskans can judge Nakamatsu's superb talent for themselves when he plays a solo recital concert at 8 p.m. March 19 in Kimball Hall as part of the Lied Center for Performing Arts' New Voices series. In addition to supporting performances by emerging artists, New Voices programs are designed to incorporate meaningful outreach experiences, targeted toward audiences members aged 12 to 21. Nakamatsu, a native Californian, has studied piano with the same teacher since the age of 6. He is unusual in that he did not attend a music conservatory - he is a graduate of Stanford University - and he majored not in music, but in German. Until this year, he was teaching high school German in Mountain View, Calif. Always a serious musician, the 28-year-old pianist said he watched the quadrennial competitions as a child and dreamed of being the winner. While a dedicated teacher, his goal is to earn his living as a concert pianist. As the Cliburn winner, he is on his way.

BY DOUGLAS McLENNAN W riting about last summer's Van Cliburn Competition, Time dubbed it the "Gong Show" of classical music. So much for the world's top international piano contest, the once-every-four-years gathering of young virtuosos sometimes referred to as the Olympics of classical music. Such scorn is probably an accurate reflection of the esteem piano contests are held in these days. The rap against competitions is that they produce bland, offend-no-one performers who have leeched out the personality from their playing. In the past, big techniques have won out over style, and individualized artistry has seldom been rewarded.
