INKTRODUCTION. It is not uncommon for Americans to give ticker-tape parades to homecoming winning basketball teams like the Chicago Bulls or Olympic medallists; but for a pianist- that's practically unheard of. Well, that is exactly what happened to Van Cliburn, the tall Texan, when he won the First (ever) Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow in 1958. A virtual unknown on Russian soil, he was soon to be the favourite going into the finals. The Russians were shocked but not surprised for Cliburn possessed charm, charisma, stature and not forgetting good technique. Practically every major classical recording star has won a major competition, Martha Argerich - the Chopin Competition; Vladimir Ashkenazy - 2nd Tchaikovsky Competition 1962; Murray Perahia - Leeds Piano Competition; Kristian Zimmerman - Chopin Competition and the list goes on and on. In fact it is now a great belief that one needs a major competition to bolster one's career. Major competitions like the Leeds, the Arthur Rubinstein Competition, Tchaikovsky and Chopin Competitions give the winners major career breakthroughs, with engagements at various major halls and festivals, recording contracts with major labels like DG, EMI or Teldec (who can normally afford the crème de la crème). Past winners of the Van Cliburn competition in recent years have included Jose Fenghali and Alexei Sultanov.

by Roger A. Cope Brevard, NC, July 17, 2005 . Comes now the Gina Bachauer Memorial Concert at Brevard Music Center. Traditionally it's a piano program because Bachauer was a pianist, natch, and a memorial endowment was made by friends to present a piano artist every season. In fact it's a split deal because we got Rossini's evergreen Overture to La Gazza Ladra and the Symphony No. 4 of Johannes Brahms (oh boy, a chance to sleep!) in the first half. At intermission, the W-P Auditorium stage was reset for Sergei Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, with Jon Nakamatsu at the piano. Then, of course, we had all day to watch/hear David Effron at work and catalogue all the funny conducting movements unique to this outstanding musician. His presence is perhaps one of the most intriguing aspects of any large ensemble on the series, and it is becoming increasingly obvious that waving the stick may not be his strength. I hate Brahms.

A former high school German teacher, he became a popular hero overnight in the highly traditional medium of classical music. Highlights of Jon Nakamatsu's current season include return engagements with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and Annapolis, Baton Rouge and Pacific Symphony Orchestras as well as performances with the orchestras of Brevard, Marin, Peninsula, Rogue Valley and West Virginia and the Masterworks Chorale at San Mateo. In recital, he is heard in Bellevue (WA), Bozeman, Columbus (GA), Corrales (NM), Fort Worth, Fort Myers, Knoxville and San Jose as well as Milan, Italy, while chamber music activities include performances with the Ives Quartet. Summer, 2004 includes Mr. Nakamatsu’s returns to Connecticut’s famed "Summer Music at Harkness" festival, Colorado’s Strings in the Mountains, and Bravo! Prized Pianist Nationally hailed pianist Jon Nakamatsu opens Salinas Concert Association season. Oct 07, 1999 By Scott MacClelland Classical Most of his Sunnyvale high school students were stunned to hear that their German teacher, Jon Nakamatsu, had won first prize at the 1997 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Most of them didn''t even know he played the piano. This Sunday evening, October 10, the Salinas Concert Association opens its 1999-2000 season with a recital by Nakamatsu at the Hartnell College Main Stage theater. Since taking gold at Ft. Worth in June, 1997, Nakamatsu''s career has exploded. His award also included two years of career management, international engagements, a recital at Carnegie Hall and a recording contract with Harmonia Mundi. He has appeared at the Kennedy Center, Hollywood Bowl, and in Milan, Chicago, London, Boston and Paris. Most performing solo artists compete against their own capabilities, not against others. According to Nakamatsu, "What you have to do is not expect to win," says Nakamatsu, "because the odds are you aren''t going to. You try to play your best, for the audience, and hope that it will lead to something.

Pianist Jon Nakamatsu: From Mountain View to Carnegie Hall
By Ruth Patrick While the American Dream takes many different forms, pianist Jon Nakamatsu has given us one of the more romantic versions. A native of Sunnyvale and a former high school teacher at St. Francis High School, Nakamatsu won first place in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in June 1997. He was the first American in 16 years to win first place without setting foot in a conservatory. The soft-spoken Nakamatsu gives most of the credit to his life-long piano teacher, Marina Derryberry.

Jon Nakamatsu came home. But if you missed his performance last Saturday with the San Jose Symphony, there's no need to panic. He's coming back to the Bay Area in just a week to perform Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 2 with ECYS at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 9 and Sunday, March 10. "It's a big event. I'm looking forward to it," said Nakamatsu. Nakamatsu, best known for his win at the 1997 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, is also locally remembered as a Stanford University alumnus and former Saint Francis High School German teacher. Although Nakamatsu now tours nationwide with 60-80 concerts a year, he still makes regular stops in the Bay Area. "Playing for the hometown crowd is really fun. You can't disappoint the people who supported you for so long," he said on Sunday.

Robert DeGaetano is a graduate of The Julliard School, where he studied with Adele Marcus and Rosina Lhevinne. Upon the recommendation of world-renowned artists, David Oistrakh and Sviatoslav Richter, Mr. DeGaetano embarked on an active concert career under the auspices of the legendary Sol Hurok.
Horacio Franco Enjoying virtual rock star status in his native Mexico, recordist HORACIO FRANCO has broken the stereotype of the traditional classical soloist through his electrifying performances of a vast repertoire that ranges from Renaissance, Baroque and contemporary works to those drawn from the wealth of folk and popular music of many nations. His international appearances consistently fill musical venues, often with young listeners attending their first concert performances.

Nakamatsu - long way to the top
printer friendly version By Marjorie Kellogg-Van Rheeden Special to the Town Crier A recollection This summer's news that Jon Nakamatsu, of Sunnyvale, won the Van Cliburn piano competition in Dallas, Texas, and subsequent articles about him, have been a welcome respite from the depressing news that often proliferates. This unassuming budding pianist, whose talent was little known, has brought pride to the area that nurtured him. Jon's switch from low to high key came after years of patient perseverence. Piano competitions were played under enormous odds, as he vied against pupils who had studied with famous teachers in renowned conservatories. Since he began piano lessons as young boy, Jon has been under the tutelage of Marina Derryberry, who is still his mentor. An early note of recognition was played by music critic Paul Hertelendy (San Jose Mercuiy News) who wrote glowingly about him in 1995 after Jon won the Chopin Piano Competition in Miami, Fla. That win resulted in piano recitals at New York Lincoln Center and Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The recent Van Cliburn International Piano Competition win assures Jon of many concert appearances in the United States and, undoubtedly, Europe.
