Going Places Doing Things Bob Crosby Bob Cats, 2002 CD, Nagel Heyer CD084 Initially, it must be stipulated that this CD is correctly credited to the Bob Crosby Bob Cats. Today's musical scene is populated by several "ghost" bands perpetuating the dated sounds of Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Count Basie, etc. In most cases, the young players in those groups, often reading the original arrangements, were not born when their namesakes' records were exciting fans of big band jazz.

Music :: July Classical Music Choices
Western Massachusetts hosts Tanglewood and many other excellent festivals this month.
by Mark Kroll
Bang on a Can. Photo: Katherine Myers Boston - July 07, 2005 - For the best of this month's classical music, travel to the Berkshires, the home of Norman Rockwell, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Serge Koussevitsky, Edith Wharton and countless other artists. Rockwell never painted musicians and Hawthorne hated the mosquitoes, but this part of Massachusetts has long been a favorite destination for music lovers. Although Tanglewood is the dominant force here, these beautiful hills are dotted with many other excellent festivals. Many are beginners who are in the early stages of training, while others have teaching and/or performance degrees. All student teachers have received at least one faculty recommendation. Faculty members serve as teaching mentors. The levels are: NIU Faculty: Teachers who are on the faculty at Northern Illinois University. Most teach advanced students only and will require an audition before accepting a student from the community school. Prices vary for NIU faculty. Call the office for further information.
Associate:
Teachers who have many years of teaching experience. Most have a bachelor’s or a master’s degree in the field and some are advanced graduate students with numerous years of teaching experience. Associates are usually teachers who live in the community.
Apprentice III:
Teachers who have taught for the community school for at least two years and who have recently graduated from NIU’s School of Music, Art, or Theatre.

Israel Myers Is Dead at 93; Originated London Fog Coat
By Saul Hansell, courtesy of The New York Times
December 31, 1999
- Israel Myers, the originator of the London Fog raincoat, died on Sunday at the North Oaks retirement community in Pikesville, Md. He was 93. After making raincoats for the Army in World War II, Mr. Myers's Londontown Manufacturing Company was the first to popularize the military trench coat for civilian wear. The design and pioneering use of polyester blends helped Londontown become the dominant maker of men's coats in the United States in the 1960's and 70's. Mr. Myers, the son of a tailor, was born in Lynchburg, Va., but moved as a boy to Baltimore. He became a statewide champion in shorthand while attending Baltimore City College. Just before graduating at 17, Mr. Myers was hired as a stenographer with the Makover, Roten Company, a maker of naval officers clothing. Mr. Myers worked for that company, with increasingly more responsible jobs, while earning a law degree at the University of Maryland at night. By 1927, the company changed its name to Londontown Clothes and began to focus on expensive men's suits and coats. The company collapsed during the Depression, and Mr. Myers obtained the rights to the Londontown name by agreeing to help the creditors liquidate its assets.

Thurston Moore, Bang on a Can Kick Off Music Institute at MASS MoCA
(North Adams, Mass.) Each year MASS MoCA and Bang on a Can offer intensive training in new music to a select group of emerging musicians. The second annual Bang on a Can Summer Institute of Contemporary Music at MASS MoCA starts on Saturday, July 19, with American UnPop , an explosive performance by the Bang on a Can All-Stars featuring Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth at 8 P.M. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer described the All Stars as "not a rock band, not a jazz combo, not a chamber ensemble. It's all three, only different." In addition to the exciting new commission from Moore, this concert will include a preview of Songs for Lou Reed by Bang on a Can co-founder David Lang. Songs features brand new settings of the classic text of prototype '60s minimalist band Velvet Underground. An additional highlight of the program is unprecedented new arrangements of the landmark player-piano studies of American expatriate composer Conlon Noncarrow. Thurston Moore's ringing feedback-heavy guitar was a major influence of a host of 1990s rock greats, including Kurt Cobain of Nirvana. He regularly delighted critics and inspired young bands to move away from the mainstream. Raised in Bethel, Connecticut, he met Sonic Youth co-founder Lee Ranaldo when he moved to New York to be a professional musician. Together they worked with avant-garde composer Glenn Branca, who specialized in extended works of guitar dissonance. They formed Sonic Youth in 1981. The group quickly became known for rows of unusually tuned guitars with objects like screwdrivers between the strings for sonic effect. Moore's work became the blueprint for the emerging indie-rock movement.
