Home Hardluck Thoughts Guest Editor Submissions ... Archives A Ray of 'Sunshine' A Conversation with Allan Guthrie by Dave Zeltserman Al's the harried looking gent on the left who's wondering how the hell he's going to write 15 more pages for his next dark novel, along with copy editing, reading a stack of new submissions, plus squeezing in 20 minutes sleep for the night. I'm the joker on the right who's trying to look cool for my Point Blank picture. Question is, why the fuck am I wearing a leather jacket in my living room in the middle of the summer? Hardluck had the distinct pleasure of interviewing this issue’s Guest Editor, Allan Guthrie. Al, like always, was forthcoming in almost all aspects (except on why the name for Hardluck Edinburgh was changed to Noir Originals, but we’ll leave that for another time), as we discussed his views on noir, his upcoming books, and his role with Point Blank Press. DZ: Last year and a half has been kind of busy for you, hasn't it? AG: Some might say too busy, Dave. Yeah, I can't believe my first ever short story was published only a year and a half ago. Jesus. What was I doing for the previous thirty-odd years? Since I'M NO KILLER appeared in Hardluck Stories in Winter 2003 I've sold a couple of novels, just finished a third and I'm working pretty hard as Acquisitions Editor for Point Blank.

Goucher Faculty Record Ravel and Shoshtakovich with the Gemini Piano Trio
By Eliot Grasso Published: Wednesday, December 10, 2003 The Gemini Piano Trio is comprised of violinist Sheng-Tsung Wang, pianist Hsiu-Hui Wang, and cellist Benjamin Myers; the latter two are among Goucher's music department faculty. Fortunately for the Goucher community, this Trio is celebrating their newest recording: a disc featuring Ravel's Piano Trio in A minor and Shostakovich's Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor.
The Gemini Trio functions comparably to a living cell, and the individual instruments its organelles. For a cell to sustain and thrive, its constituent parts must work cooperatively, make compromises and be totally aware of what is transpiring around it. Pianist, cellist, and violinist play together in such a finely tuned balance that each minute sonic alteration made by one is immediately detected by the others.

One of the most brilliant playwrights of all time was Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, better known by his stage name, Molière. The seventeenth-century Parisian left behind a body of work that has helped define the medium for centuries.
In the 1660s, Molière created one of his most unforgettable characters, Tartuffe, the ultimate hypocrite. More than three hundred years later, Kirke Mechem composed an opera from Molière’s play which, since its premiere with the San Francisco Opera in 1980, has been performed over 300 times to rave reviews throughout the world.
On May 4, 6 and 8, the Fletcher Opera Institute will perform Mechem’s Tartuffe in DeMille Theater, with the composer in attendance. Mr. Mechem will also participate in a roundtable discussion of the piece, with music director Jamie Allbritten and stage director Will Graham, on Thursday, May 5 in DeMille Theater at 7:30 p.m. The composer will also give a Composition Seminar on Friday, May 6 in Gray 134 at 3:30 p.m.
ASCAP registered performances of Mechem's music in 42 countries last year. Mechem was guest of honor at the 1990 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and was invited back for an all-Mechem symphonic concert by the USSR Radio-Television Orchestra in 1991. The concert was recorded by Melodiya and released on the Russian Disc label. Mechem was born and raised in Kansas and educated at Stanford and Harvard universities. He conducted and taught at Stanford and was for several years composer-in-residence at the University of San Francisco. He lived in Vienna for three years where he came to the attention of Josef Krips, who later championed Mechem's music as conductor of the San Francisco Symphony.

Hyper
Porn Star
Just before my first visit there the club members had been split almost halfway as to whether they should allow a former Italian porn star who was in fact quite a strong blitz player to join the club. Despite her indubitable charm and good looks she was denied membership by the thinnest of margins though I saw her once or twice afterwards as a patron of the cafe. My sister returned to Salzburg for several successive summers and I tagged along playing blitz till I could drop. The hours I spent there were some of the best I have ever spent in a chess club and at a time when I was rapidly improving, playing strong opposition on a daily basis and earning a little pocket money did my chess a world of good. Sadly now the club has moved premises due to the cafe being turned into some American clothes shop. Though the club still exists the atmosphere and grandeur of Cafe Mozart in it's heyday is something that will not be possible to recreate.
Family Fork
Back in Dublin, I joined a local chess club which met once a week for a few hours and whose membership was twenty pence to be presented on a weekly basis. Though this club was indeed a fabulous club from which many strong players progressed, the highlight in the view of the members was always the game of chasing in and out of a cluster of trees in the school grounds afterwards. Strangely my most enduring memory of the time there was the manner in which I tried to get the attention of a girl I had a crush on by wearing luminous snot-green socks. Any chance of romance was however scuppered when during a chess encounter I took the somewhat questionable decision of trying to impress her by catching her in a family fork in front of numerous onlookers. Had I had the foresight to blunder horribly, perhaps I would have found a beautiful mate, yet at the age of seven I lacked such worldly knowledge and some might argue still do!
