Huw Watkins
"A composer whose concern is to let the music say only what music can say. With brilliant economy of means and clarity of notation, Watkins gets a Stravinskian rhythmic levarage [in ‘Rondo’], with a rigour that is at one with its beauty.” Paul Driver, The Sunday Times, 13.03.2005
Huw Watkins was born in South Wales in 1976. He studied piano with Peter Lawson and Peter Pettinger and composition with Robin Holloway, Alexander Goehr and Julian Anderson. In 2001 he was awarded the Constant and Kit Lambert Junior Fellowship at the Royal College of Music which he held for two years. He is now a professor of composition at the RCM. Huw Watkins is in great demand both as composer and pianist. The Independent on Sunday described him as ’a pianist of alert intelligence and a composer with something to say’ following his 1999 Park Lane Group Young Artists Concert at London’s Purcell Room. In March 2000 he gave the London premiere of his Violin Sonata at Wigmore Hall with the violinist Daniel Bell. In the same month he was soloist in Messiaen’s Sept Haikai with the Northern Sinfonia at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall. In May 2002 he gave the world premiere of a new work for solo piano by Alexander Goehr. He is regularly heard on Radio Three, both as a soloist and with artists such as Daniel Hope, Nicholas Daniel and Alexandra Wood. He has recorded Thomas Adès’ song cycle The Lover in Winter with the countertenor Robin Blaze for EMI Classics.

The A - Z of Composers Olli Mustonen Born in Helsinki on 7 June 1967, Olli Mustonen took his first harpsichord lessons at the age of five and was taught to play the piano by Ralf Gothóni at the age of seven. A year later he made his first composition attempts, and from 1975 studied composition with Einoiuhani Rautavaara. Soon, Mustonen was much sought after, both as a conductor and as a concert pianist (studies with Eero Heinonen). Since 1989, Mustonen has been playing an active role in the musical scene of his home country; first, he became artistic director of the Korsholm Music Festival and from 1990-1992 of the Turku Music Festival as well. He is co-founder and director of the Helsinki Festival Orchestra, and since 2003 has been conducting the chamber orchestra Tapiola Sinfonietta. As a pianist, Mustonen has given concerts with numerous major international orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orkest, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonics, and others. In addition, he maintains close working relations with renowned conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Pierre Boulez and Christoph Eschenbach. In 1999, he performed the world première of Rodion Shchedrin’s Piano Concerto No. 5, which is dedicated to him, with Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. For his recording of '24 Preludes and Fugues' by Dmitri Shostakovich and '25 Preludes' by Charles-Valentin Alkan, Mustonen received both the Edison Award and the Gramophone Award in 1992.

There are a whole bunch of odd things going on in this 2-CD set. We have a pianist who insists on being different, particularly with Bach. One moment he's giving us whiplashed notes that I'll call 'stingers', the next moment he sounds rather demure and extremely precious. Mustonen offers waves of changes in tempo and dynamics that you never knew existed (and perhaps don't). Rhythmic patterns are critters to dissect and then rearrange. Throughout it all, Mustonen displays a level of virtuosity I wouldn't have thought possible; this man can do anything he wants on the keyboard. The program is one you haven't seen recently: 12 preludes and fugues from Bach and 12 from Shostakovich, all sequenced the Mustonen way. Does the Bach/Shostakovich/Mustonen consortium make any sense, or is this corporate endeavor dead in the water?
