Main The Art of Fantasy by Alex Ross The New Yorker, March 17, 2003 Schubert’s Sonata in G begins with a beautiful, sleepy, not immediately gripping theme—not so much a melody as a murmur of chords. It keeps ambling out in various directions only to retreat to the same delectable place, as if it could not rouse itself from its G-major bed. When I was studying piano, I foolishly decided that this was one of the Master’s more insignificant efforts, and skipped forward to the Sonata in B Flat, which has a way of sounding unutterably sublime even in the hands of a bumbling amateur. I felt an extra, private sense of wonder when Mitsuko Uchida played the G-Major Sonata the other night at Carnegie Hall and unlocked Schubert’s secrets one by one. It is one thing to get all the notes right; any number of unsocialized conservatory prodigies can do that. It is another thing to play the thoughts within the notes, the light around them, the darkness behind them, the silence at the end of the phrase. That is what inspires awe. Between Chopin’s Polonaise-Fantaisie and the Third Sonata, Andsnes offered an array of pieces by Grieg, Debussy, and the contemporary Japanese composer Akira Miyoshi. It was, essentially, a lightning tour of Impressionism early, middle, and late. Grieg’s Lyric Pieces, of which Andsnes played five, are often pigeonholed as salon trifles, and they have seldom been heard at Carnegie Hall. “Bell Ringing,” an astounding piece that abandons conventional tonality for a world of free-floating open fifths, had, according to Carnegie records, never before appeared on a recital program in the main auditorium. The dates of composition, 1889 to 1891, look like a misprint, but they aren’t. Andsnes went without a pause from “Bell Ringing” to two Debussy ©tudes, as if to make the point that his Norwegian countryman was writing like Debussy almost before Debussy existed.

Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 received an underwhelming going-over by veteran virtuoso Ivan Moravec, and although Shostakovich's naughty Symphony No. 9 had sumptuous moments, blemishes undermined a good many prominent episodes. The San Jose Symphony Home Page has this season's complete schedule. Oddly enough, Panufnik's immensely challenging Sinfonia sacra (1964) came closest to the mark. Music Director Leonid Grin gave the work its due, drawing from the orchestra a reading that was both informed and spirited. Panufnik's Sinfonia sacra is a work of strength and beauty. The composer gracefully accomplished his stated purpose of invoking religious, as well as heroic, virtues in musical terms. Composed as a tribute to Poland's Millennium of Christianity and Statehood, the Sinfonia sacra draws plentifully from this country's history.

Davis Illustration by Sean McCabe Apparently conductors like to teach as much as they enjoy entertaining people or simply showing off, since nearly all orchestral concerts nowadays have some sort of instructive premise. James Levine has not yet spent a full season as the Boston Symphony’s new music director, but he is already giving his audiences plenty of what he thinks is good for them, especially new music. No doubt many listeners object to taking their medicine, but that hardly keeps Dr. Levine from vigorously administering fresh doses. The orchestra’s latest visit to Carnegie Hall offered new scores by two of Levine’s favorite contemporaries—John Harbison and Charles Wuorinen, both born in 1938—and in between was Stravinsky’s severe and tersely compressed twelve-tone Movements for Piano and Orchestra , a late work completed in 1959. The Brahms Second Symphony came last—not exactly a sweetmeat, but in this context definitely a spoonful of sugar.
