Ivan Moravec
Classical The balding, unassuming man could be a banker or perhaps a midlevel bureaucrat. In reality, Ivan Moravec, while hardly a superstar, is one of the world's most respected musicians, a true pianist's pianist. His cool Czech demeanor does not dissipate when he sits down to play; Moravec never plays for self-glory but rather devotes all of his enormous energy into bringing the classics of the repertoire to life. His ability to disappear into the music is uncanny and marvelous. On Monday evening, he applies his special art to the great music of Schumann, Debussy and Beethoven. MIDDLEBURY, Vt.— Canadian pianist Marc-Andr© Hamelin will perform in place of Ivan Moravec in the Concert Hall at the Middlebury College Center for the Arts at the same time and on the same date as the originally scheduled concert―8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13.  Moravec, who is also a pianist, has cancelled his United States tour due to illness.  Hamelin will perform works by Isaac Albeniz.     Hamelin is internationally renowned for his musical virtuosity.  Perhaps best recognized for his attention to lesser-known composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, he is equally at home with the standard repertoire.  Hamelin has given recitals in numerous cities around the world, including Amsterdam, Berlin, Frankfurt, New York, Paris, Vienna and Washington. On July 21, 2003, The New York Times dubbed Hamelin an “excellent pianist,” reporting, “In the Schumann he captured the distinctive German blend of complexity and sentiment in readings now fiery, now intensely internal.” Tickets to the Feb. 13 Moravec concert will be honored for Hamelin’s performance.  The Middlebury College Center for the Arts is on South Main Street (Route 30).  For further information about the concert, please contact the Box Office at

The Home Entertainment 2005 East Show - Show Stoppers
    by Myles B. Astor
It was Jack English (then writing for the magazine Sounds Like… ) who pointed out to me the discrepancy between whom the reviewers and show attendees chose as best sound at the then Stereophile and now The Home Entertainment Show . Was it that few show attendees made it to the top floors of the show (at least when the Stereophile Show featured more manufacturers and rooms)? Was the voting a popularity contest? Was there a difference in listening habits? Were the differences simply a matter of the spectacular sounding exhibits getting more immediate attention? (we all know the inverse relationship between what sounds good at first and how it sounds with long term listening)? Or are reviewers out in left field and totally out-of-touch with their audience? Whatever the reason, it is becoming increasingly apparent that choosing a best sound at the HE Show at the current Hilton Hotel show venue is an exercise in futility, especially for those exhibitors showing their wares in the smaller, upper floor rooms. Exhibitors are really presented with difficult problems in overcoming the acoustics/size of these rooms. So what follows is my picks of those exhibitors who managed to transcend the sound of their exhibitor rooms and catch my attention. Best Sound at the Show AKA Most Perplexing Paradox Bosendorfer Room The pianos being played at the HE Show included the 9-foot "Emperor of Japan" and a Porsche design. The former piano is quoting the Bosendorfer literature "…a replica of design commissioned by Kaiser Franz Joseph of Austria in 1869… and presented to Emperor Meijo of Japan." Valued at $500K (so much for high-end audio prices!) and sporting an ornate 24 K gold finish, this instrument put to shame any and all systems at the show. The latter piano design is based upon a design by the grandson of F.A. Porsche and valued at $125K. In fact, I made it a point to attend as many of the Bosendorfer sponsored piano recitals as possible during the show (unfortunately, more people should have spent time listening to the piano!).

Pianist Creates Collage of Emotion in Jazzy Concerto
    By Diane Peterson
The Press Democrat, March 17, 2003
The Santa Rosa Symphony under Music Director Jeffrey Kahane took a spring-like romp Saturday night through a series of vibrant works based on the variation theme. Like a climbing vine, each work sprouted elaborate tendrils around its themes, growing and evolving into colorful and inventive variations.
Framed by Brahms' sturdy "Variations on a Theme of Joseph Haydn" and Hindemith's crisp "Symphonic Metamorphoses on Themes of Carl Maria von Weber," the program showcased the orchestra's top-notch wind, brass and percussion sections.
But the intellectual pleasures derived from these works paled beside the deep well of emotion that flowed from Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major, played before intermission with grace and warmth by Czech pianist Ivan Moravec.
The tall, stately pianist brought a sense of calm and utter control to the jazzy concerto, which opens with a bang from the percussion section and sparkling arpeggios and glissandos from the piano.

    Subtle Beauties
    By Jerry Kuderna
San Francisco Classical Voice, March 17, 2003
Ever since the Czech pianist Ivan Moravec began to establish himself in this country in the 60’s as one of the world’s distinguished pianists he has been better known for his performances of solo repertoire than for those with orchestra. The Santa Rosa symphony decided to correct this by presenting him in two concertos on their program last week, works containing no less than three sets of variations. The Ravel G major and Franck Symphonic Variations, works that are essentially dialogues between the soloist and orchestra, gave Moravec a chance to demonstrate the subtleties of his art. While his playing does not lack brilliance, Moravec is a patrician artist. Rather than overwhelming you, he lays nuance upon nuance, letting the music speak without rhetoric.
The Ravel concerto was played like chamber music, the piano moving gracefully in an out of the texture. Conductor Jefferey Kahane, who recently performed this concerto with the San FranciscoSymphony, was a most sympathetic collaborator. In the slow movement the rapport between pianist and the orchestra brought out the harmonic balances and exquisite piano filigree that embroider the wind solos. The outer movements benefited from Moravec’s wonderfully incisive articulation and imparted an irresistible verve and élan.
