THINGS ARE LOOKING UP!
MHR Records CD-03
Personnel: Paul Hofmann, acoustic piano; Gerald Spaits, acoustic bass; Tommy Ruskin, drums.
Tracks: Things Are Looking Up; Doxy; Seven Steps To Heaven; Blues For Alan; When I Fall In Love; January Waltz; Miles Remembered; Blues For David; The Look In Your Eyes; R And D At Hattie's; Pitter-Patter; Shalom.
Take two esteemed Kansas City jazz veterans (bassist Gerald Spaits and drummer Tommy Ruskin), a relatively new, and very welcome addition to the area jazz scene (pianist and transplanted upstate New Yorker Paul Hofmann), put them together in one of KC's finest studios (Soundtrek) with a gifted engineer (Ron Ubel) running the board...and what do you get? A swinging, rock-solid date, just out on CD, entitled Things Are Looking Up!, Paul Hofmann's third release on his own MHR label.
The fare here is acoustic trio-playing at its finest (plus some tasty solo piano and one piano/drums duo). Whether it be recognizable standards ("Doxy," "Seven Steps To Heaven," "When I Fall In Love") played to near perfection, or a healthy batch of Hofmann originals (8 of the disc's 12 cuts), this project represents a combination of charts and musicians predestined to work some genuine magic in the studio. What a pleasure it must have been for Ron Ubel to simply sit back and enjoy.
Especially noteworthy is the trio's treatment of the album's title tune (and first track), "Things Are Looking Up!," a relatively obscure Gershwin brothers song composed a year before George Gershwin's death in 1937. It sets the mood perfectly for what follows: inventive and technically masterful piano choruses, in-the-pocket, Gibraltar-like bass lines (and solos), and the precision drumming of one of the area's most respected and recognizable stickmen.

FORGOTTEN STORIES
KevTone-121
Personnel: Sean Hennessy, guitar; Kevin Hennessy, acoustic & electric bass; Duncan Moore, drums; Rob Whitlock, piano & Hammond B-3; Dave Scott, trumpet; Peter Sprague, nylon string guitar on "Obrigado Tom," Tripp Sprague, tenor saxophone, pandeiro
Tracks: Forgotten Stories; Orion, the Hunter; Joe's Good Side; Bunkin' With Duncan; Obrigado Tom; Wes Coast; Chant
Recorded at Spragueland Studio, Leucadia, CA; Peter Sprague, engineer. Additional recording at the Wildlife Room, Columbia, MO; James Steffan, engineer.
This album is drenched in rich jazz traditions, covering a wide palette without losing a central, identifying sound. Missouri natives Sean and Kevin Hennessy, and Ruskin High alum Dave Scott, are joined by four other West Coast heavies for seven original compositions (six by Sean, one by Kevin).
Forgotten Stories starts off with a lilting 6/8 head, shifting through harmonies reminiscent of early Pat Metheny, breaking into a straightahead blowing rampage, particularly notable for Sean Hennessy's lyrical bebop leanings. It would be easy to pass this off as a lost recording of Emily Remler, with its clear, well developed structure and melodic sense.
"Orion, the Hunter," which was inspired by Sean's study of a McCoy Tyner solo, has the open, West Coast feel of vintage Wayne Shorter. It's up-tempo bebop featuring burning solos by Dave Scott and Sean Hennessy.

94. Joan Crawford Film Comments
Robert montgomery is my least favorite of Joan s leading men so that s the onlything I lonely Broadway star who finds true love with her blind pianist.
http://members.aol.com/HarlowGold/joanfilm.html
Joan Crawford's Films
All of the following reviews were written by me except where noted.
Tramp, Tramp, Tramp
The earliest Crawford film available - she has the "girlfriend" role opposite comedian Harry Langdon. A cute, silent comedy with a happy ending.
The Unknown (1927)
A fascinating silent horror film starring the great Lon Chaney. Joan plays a beautiful circus performer who is afraid of men who are constantly groping her. Lon pretends to have no arms and thus allays Joan's fears - but circumstances soon force Lon's pretend situation to become real. Some frightening and sickening moments in this film, one particularly gruesome scene - Lon's rival nearly torn in two by horses pulling in the opposite direction.
Twelve Miles Out (1927)
Joan costars with one of the silent screen's great romantic icons, John Gilbert. Gilbert is a smuggler in the prohibition era and Joan is his lovely kidnapped victim turned lover. A very dramatic story and seaside setting.
Across to Singapore (1928)
Joan costars with the adorable Ramon Novarro in this love story.

CHAPTER XIII
A SLICE OF HUMBLE PIE
"I am very much afraid, Mrs. Dr. dear," said Susan, who had been on a pilgrimage to the station with some choice bones for Dog Monday, "that something terrible has happened. Whiskers-on-the-moon came off the train from Charlottetown and he was looking pleased. I do not remember that I ever saw him with a smile on in public before. Of course he may have just been getting the better of somebody in a cattle deal but I have an awful presentiment that the Huns have broken through somewhere."
Perhaps Susan was unjust in connecting Mr. Pryor's smile with the sinking of the Lusitania, news of which circulated an hour later when the mail was distributed. But the Glen boys turned out that night in a body and broke all his windows in a fine frenzy of indignation over the Kaiser's doings.
Mary Vance dropped in one evening to tell the Ingleside folks that she had withdrawn all opposition to Miller Douglas's enlisting.
"This Lusitania business was too much for me," said Mary brusquely. "When the Kaiser takes to drowning innocent babies it's high time somebody told him where he gets off at. This thing must be fought to a finish. It's been soaking into my mind slow but I'm on now. So I up and told Miller he could go as far as I was concerned. Old Kitty Alec won't be converted though. If every ship in the world was submarined and every baby drowned, Kitty wouldn't turn a hair. But I flatter myself that it was me kept Miller back all along and not the fair Kitty. I may have deceived myselfbut we shall see."
