MUSI 310: INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC CONCERT REPORT GUIDELINES INSTRUCTIONS Choose three musical events to attend, according to the following guidelines. - One must feature Western classical music. - One must give you an opportunity to examine music within the context of ritual, such as a major political event, a religious service, or a sporting event. Important: choose an event significantly different from what you know. For example, if you choose a religious service, note that there are Hindu and Buddhist temples nearby; there is a Roman Catholic convent in Nashville and a famous Trappist monastery near Bardstown, KY; and there are "high" Episcopal churches in Nashville and Belle Meade. - One is your choice. - Student recitals are not to be used. - Events in which you participate are not eligible. - Event Dates: the musical event discussed in the first report must occur less than one month prior to the due date; the event discussed in the second report must occur after the due date of the first; the event discussed in the third report must occur after the due date of the second. Basic Information: Who, What, Where, and When (and Why, if applicable). Who was performing? What was the event, and (especially) What were the performing media? When and Where was the event held? Why was the event held (any special reason)?

Miller Theatre's 15th Anniversary Season opens with a zany thrill ride of a concert that mixes music from past Miller seasons with composers to be discovered this year. Conlon Nancarrow's player-piano rhythms beat at the heart of the program, which extends to Ligeti's fascination with ticking clocks and broken machines, the crazy-cat energy of John Adams and Benedict Mason, and the rock-and-roll heart of Michael Gordon. This whirling musical carnival will be the perfect showcase for Alarm Will Sound, whom The New York Times calls "dynamic."

Curious Assortment

Curious Assortment consists of five pieces:
The pieces in this collection are a kind of program music, meant to represent the peculiarity of the subconscious world rather than reality. They may be performed individually.
What does a volley of ping pong sound like on the piano? This is what I decided to find out, and the results of my research are heard in The Ping Pong Prelude . After the imitative opening measures, however, the game continues in a dreamlike state, while still making use of the initial musical motifs.
Sorry, Wrong Cabaret
was conceived as an imaginary dance number with multiple short themes, none of them predominating. The vaudevillean effect is purposely disjointed, and a person entering this cabaret realizes that he has arrived at the wrong place and time. February 29th Birthday Waltz was composed as a gift for an octogenarian friend, Judi P. Craven, who celebrated only some twenty-odd birthdays. It peeks into the mysterious plight (or blessing) of one who does not have a birthday every year. The date is spelled out musically, using the notes F,E,B and the second and ninth intervals.

Dear Christine: It was such a delight to hear you in concert and have you stay with us! Thank you so much for your beautiful gift of music. I hope that you enjoyed your time here, and sorry that the weather was so cold here when you came. If you decide to return here to experience the winter of the true-north, remember to bring your wool touque and your balaclava! The summers are incredibly beautiful here, and if you visit us late August, you'll still be able to catch a glimpse of the Aurora and a breathtaking reflection of it on the lake. It was such a pleasure to meet you and your trio, and we hope to hear you again in concert here in the NWT! With love, Joanne and Paul
