Turn it down. I can't hear my cellphone
    by Peter Shaw
New Zealand Symphony Orchestra conducted by James Judd with soloists Helen Medlyn (mezzo), Roger Wilson (baritone) and Margaret Medlyn (soprano) at the Auckland Town Hall, April 22-24.
It began, just as we had composed ourselves in order to listen, with a bellowed announcement delivered on behalf of the concert's sponsor, Vector, forbidding the use of cellphones during concerts. Then conductor James Judd came to the podium, grasped the microphone and uttered some innocuous re-marks about the music to follow. Why do we have programme notes, one wonders. Can't concert audiences be left alone to settle in readiness to listen to music instead of being blabbed at by conductors? Finally, we were permitted a few moments of peace before Schubert's genial Symphony No 5 began.
The second half of the concert offered a wholly different experience, with beautiful performances of three pieces from the Rosamunde Incidental Music and a truly distinguished one of the Unfinished Symphony. Avoiding the temptation to make the work portentous, Judd concentrated on melodic flow. In this he was significantly helped by the superb playing of the orchestra's principal oboeist Robert Orr and clarinettist Patrick Barry.

Tákacs taught and collected folk music in both Egypt and the Philippines (as well as spending 18 years teaching in Cincinatti) after the manner of Bartók and several of his more exotic items found their way into Postcard Greetings (1987) while American Rhapsody (1993) has four movements, only one of which is based on an American folk song (the others are Celtic, Hungarian and Jewish, so go figure...). The Rhapsody (1941) uses 18th century Hungarian themes while the most serious work here is the Passacaglia of the early 60s which kind of sounds like "Bartók meets Bach". Camerata Budapest, Dodici Chamber Orchestra Györ; Attila Szabó (violin). The sonata (1914) shows some of Pfitzner's influence (with whom Marek had been studying) while some of its chromatic angularity points toward Schoenberg; the whole work is passionate and often troubled as befits its time. Safe in Switzerland, the suite was completed in 1918 and dedicated to Marek's violinist wife and its four movements alternate deep personal feelings with elegant wit and high spirits. Annemarie is extended "jazz humoresque" dating from 1937 while the Sérénade is a transcription of the slow movement of his Sinfonietta which opened this series with such a start. This third release in Olympia's Popov series couples works from different ends of the composer's career. The suite was culled from music written for the 1932 propaganda film Komsomol is the Chief of Electrification (really) and contains five brief movements showing Popov's early musical personality: pungent orchestrations both virtuoso and highly personal, not without a hint of Prokofiev. The fifth symphony was written in 1956 and represented Popov's first effort at reclaiming his place in the Soviet musical firmament after Stalin's death. A massive work of five movements (Pastorale, Storm, Struggle, Hopes and a second Pastorale) the symphony shows Rimsky-Korsakov's influence in its superb orchestration as well as evident influences from Ravel and Prokofiev. Moscow Radio & TV SO; Edvard Chivzhel, USSR State SO; Gurgen Karapetian. Olympia OCD 598 (England) BORIS TISHCHENKO (b. 1939): Concerto for Harp and Chamber Orchestra, Op. 69, ALBERTO GINASTERA (b. 1916): Concerto for Harp and Orchestra. St. Petersburg composer Boris Tishchenko's harp concerto makes its belated CD debut. One of Shostakovich's finest students, Tishchenko's music is concentrated, intense and expressive. Dating from 1977, the concerto, in 5 movements lasting 45 minutes, is predominantly inward-looking and treats the harp as a "first among equals" rather than as a virtuosic soloist. An unexpected touch is the use of a wordless soprano in its fourth movement Intermezzo. Krzysztof Penderecki (b.1933) Metamorphosen - Violin Concerto No.2 Violin Sonata No.2, Sz 76 Anne-Sophie Mutter, violin / London Symphony Orchestra / Krzysztof Penderecki, conductor / Lambert Orkis, piano (DG 453 507 - 2) Category 20th-Century - Orchestral - Chamber Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki is no mere entertainer. Since his desertion of Pierre Boulez influences, he became one of the first avant-garde composers to experiment with sounds generated by non-musical instruments such as sawing wood, typewriters, rustling paper, hissing, screeching and so on. Musical instruments were exploited through non-traditional means to create unique musical sound effects. But what made his works memorable was his ability to make sensible, artistic use of these freakish effects. A general survey of his fairly modest but distinguished output will reveal a body of very serious work. His popular choral pieces are mostly religious, intense and austere. In the orchestral category, the well-known Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima involved 52 strings paying haunting, eerie respects to the casualties of nuclear warfare.
