by Mat Edelson Sounds like you had to make a choice early... When you were young did you think you were good, only to find out otherwise? Or more than one... Sure. But it can move you forward. How? Did he? Money. Why? And the personal reason? my stuff? Have a favorite? What about non-CD compositions? Or opening for Buckwheat Zydeco... Yeah. As he was going on I told him in the dressing room he looked just like James Brown. Buckwheat liked that... Is it tough or frustrating playing Zydeco-style accordion in The Crawdaddies after being raised on classical accordion? So where will you play? And then? Thank God that he created them to give you something to shoot for. E-MAIL US:

By Alec Franklor Yoga for Depression:
A Compassionate Guide to
Relieve Suffering Through Yoga
by Amy Weintraub, Broadway Books, NY, NY 2004. $14.95
Yoga Journal and Psychology Today , Weintraub teaches from the ancient yogic philosophy that is the basis of the Kripalu tradition. She references detailed research to explain why yoga works, discussing the reduction of the stress hormone cortisol as a result of glandular stimulation during yoga postures, and the increase in relaxing alpha brain waves and emotional theta waves as a result of the breathing and meditation exercises. Written for both the yoga novice and experienced practitioner, the book does not suggest a specific series of poses to alleviate depression but rather focuses on understanding depression and how aspects of yoga can be used to overcome it. Weintraub discusses several yoga traditions to help the reader find the right teacher and best practice for their particular symptoms and constitution. An Iyengar teacher, for example, may prescribe specific postures and keep introspection to a minimum while a member of the Kripalu tradition may advocate a combination of postures, meditation, and breathing.

http://www.fantasyjazz.com/html/ofarrilla_bio.html
ARTURO O'FARRILL - bio "I did not choose to study jazz," says Arturo O'Farrill. "I chose to listen to jazz, and to allow the people whose work I admire to permeate my playing almost by osmosis. Sometimes I'll tell my fingers to zig and they'll zagbut I'm trying to speak from the heart in a way that transcends all the training I've had." The fact is, jazz chose this 39-year-old classically-trained pianist. On Blood Lines , his first outing as a leader, O'Farrill demonstrates a polychromatic patchwork of influences that makes him impossible to categorize, but that reflects both masterful technique and confident understanding of jazz in its many guisesfrom a straightahead standard to a sultry Cuban classic to a free jazz kaleidoscope of shaded tone and fractured timing. As the title of this date suggests, the music's practically embedded in his DNA. It's part of his childhood, his heritagemaybe even his destiny. He's listened to jazz since the crib. He was born June 22, 1960 in Mexico City, where his father, renowned Cuban composer Chico O'Farrill (whose works have been recorded by Benny Goodman, Stan Kenton, Dizzy Gillespie, the Machito Orchestra, and Mario Bauza), had a thriving career as a bandleader. "My life was like living in an I Love Lucy sitcom," O'Farrill recalls. "My father was a musician and Mom was a singer in his band. He worked nights, so we were raised by eight or nine aunts and uncles. I grew up eating tacos and frijoles, and I still identify very strongly with being Mexican. The funny thing is, last year I spent some time in the Catskills, in an area called the Emerald Isle, and I got connected with my Irish culture, too. I'm a New York mutt, and that's what comes across in my music.
