The Opening Ceremony of '96 Graduate Students was Held
The opening ceremony of '96 Ph.D. and MA candidates was held on September 18. Han Xing-chen, Secretary of the University Party Committee, leaders of NU, and heads of schools and departments attended the ceremony. This year NU has the largest enrollment of graduate students in the school's history. The number has reached 2,727, among whom 801 are MA students and 242 Ph.D. students. Yin Cheng-zong Accepted Adjunct Professorship of Nanjing University
On September 18, NU held a ceremony to confer Adjunct Professorship on Mr. Yin Cheng- zong, the world famous pianist. Vice-president Xie Li presented the certificate and the school badge to Mr. Yin. In his speech " 'The Yellow River' and I", Professor Yin talked about his love for music, ideals in life and the process of composing his piano concerto "The Yellow River". He also answered the questions put forward by the students. Great emphasis has been laid on the students' cultural education in NU. As one of the universities chosen to conduct cultural education on a trial basis, NU offers over 40 selective culture courses, covering a wide range of dancing, Beijing Opera, piano, calligraphy, painting, photography, and appreciation of Chinese and foreign films, music, and arts. About 5,000 students take the culture courses every year. Professor Yin Chen-zong was glad to see the strong cultural atmosphere in NU. [ University -last updated:Nov 5,1996-

Molly and Vicki arrived late at the Singer/Songwriter workshop. A blonde woman in buckskins was picking harp-like guitar arpeggios and singing in a high, childlike voice. From headband to moccasins, she was encrusted with fetishes, beads, shells, turquoise and silver jewelry. This, Vicki guessed, must be New Age singer Sierra Moonbeam. As Vicki surveyed the other performers, she realized that she'd stumbled into a sort of sartorial Rosetta stone. For here, in the workshop, there was a cross section of all the major folky clothing styles. At the far left end of the stage, the nerd or filker style of dress was modeled by a gangling, fidgety young man in rumpled jeans, rumpled T shirt, suspenders, and Reeboks. Lounging on the young man's right was a tall, tattooed cowboy. Next to the cowboy sat an androgynous punk rocker type with a buzz haircut, black leather boots and jacket, ripped jeans, and a "Welcome to Washington" T-shirt which featured a picture of a smiley face with the top of its head blown off. At the far right a heavily made up woman in a strapless black velvet evening gown lounged against a piano and stared glassily into the crowd. Behind her a piano player in a tux stifled a yawn.
From a tape that was made at the workshop and later turned up as evidence in the trial, Vicki was able to transcribe portions of the workshop that she felt imparted the true flavor of the event. She wishes to thank the workshop participants for permitting her to use this material.

Yo-Yo Ma The many-faceted career of cellist Yo-Yo Ma is testament to his continual search for new ways to communicate with audiences, and to his personal desire for artistic growth and renewal. Whether performing a new concerto, revisiting a familiar work from the cello repertoire, coming together with colleagues for chamber music, reaching out to young audiences and student musicians or exploring cultures and musical forms outside of the Western classical tradition, Mr. Ma strives to find connections that stimulate the imagination. Yo-Yo Ma maintains a balance between his engagements as soloist with orchestras throughout the world and his recital and chamber music activities. He draws inspiration from a wide circle of collaborators, creating programs with such artists as Emanuel Ax, Daniel Barenboim, Christoph Eschenbach, Pamela Frank, Jeffrey Kahane, Kayhan Kalhor, Ton Koopman, Jaime Laredo, Bobby McFerrin, Edgar Meyer, Mark Morris, Mark O'Connor, the late Isaac Stern, Kathryn Stott, Wu Man, Wu Tong and David Zinman. Each of these collaborations is fueled by the artists' interactions, often extending the boundaries of a particular genre. One of Mr. Ma's goals is the exploration of music as a means of communication, and as a vehicle for the migrations of ideas across a range of cultures throughout the world. To that end, he has taken time to immerse himself in subjects as diverse as native Chinese music with its distinctive instruments and the music of the Kalahari bush people in Africa.

THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR Concert review, March 18, 2004
Concert offers distinctive cultural blend By Whitney Smith
It possessed a certain yin and yang, this unlikely coming together of Oriental and Occidental cultures that marked one of Ensemble Music Society's most distinctive concert presentations lately, and perhaps in its entire 60-year history. "East Meets West" is the name of a quintet consisting of two ancient, influential Asian instruments and a decidedly Eurocentric chamber group a piano trio. This ensemble embracing the Amelia Piano Trio and the Chinese-born, Chicago-based team of Betti Xiang and Yang Wei is a product of the Silk Road Project organized by cellist Yo-Yo Ma. "East Meets West" is a forum not only for cultural exchange, but for close musical collaboration. Concertgoers have the chance to hear technical virtuosity and expressiveness from two quite different cultures, as well as the synthesis of them both. The group's repertoire at this Indianapolis concert program ranged from traditional music for Chinese instruments to a muscular rendition of an early 20th-century chamber music staple Maurice Ravel's Piano Trio in A minor on through new works created for the group by Chinese-American composer Lu Pei. In the air at Wednesday night's concert at the Indiana History Center Theater was a clear fascination with the erhu (a bowed lute sometimes referred to as the Chinese violin) and the pipa (a pear-shaped, plucked lute).

The tale is also associated with music written for the pi pa, a kind of Chinese lute; an instrument which plays a significant solo part in this concerto.

Y angtze Repertory Theatre of America
was co-founded by Joanna Chan in 1992 to produce works for and by Asian artists. Since then, has become New York's most significant entry point for dramatic works from Chinese-speaking countries and a place of collaboration for artists from various parts of Asia, especially from Hong Kong, Taiwan and China proper. This is notable considering that for years, Chinese from these areas have not come together socially. Between Life and Death, written and directed by Gao XingJian, the 2000 Noble laureate in literature, at the Cino Theater, Theater for the New City, with Eleonora Kihlberg as Woman and BinJung Lee as the Mime. (Photo by Christopher Thomas) Yangtze's 1997 production of "Between Life and Death," a Beckettian play by Gao Xingjian (commissioned by the French Ministry of Culture), was the only play by that author ever produced in America before Mr. Gao won the 2000 Nobel Prize for Literature. To accompany that production, which was staged at Theater for the New City, Yangtze Rep also presented a month long exhibition of Mr. Gao's ink paintings in the lobby of Pace University's Schimmel Center for the Arts in 1997. To-date, these events are the only full-length presentations of Mr. Gao's work in the U.S.

While it left much to be desired as a movie, one of the main pleasures to be had from A MAN CALLED HERO was the inclusion of Yuen Biao in a supporting role. While Jackie Chan achieved new heights of stardom in the late 90s, Ah Biao found himself cast in pictures more and more unworthy of his talents. Sammo Hung squandering his talents in the abysmal MARTIAL LAW series was depressing enough but one can only wonder how "third brother" must have felt stuck in swill like TOUGH BEAUTY AND THE SLOPPY SLOP and THE HAUNTED HUNTER. Unfortunately, MILLENNIUM DRAGON continues this sad pattern, thanks to a ludicrous storyline, poor production, and the consistently deadly hand of former kung fu star turned hack director, Phillip Ko Fei (who also has a supporting role here).
