Jan. 25, 1887 (Forrestville, NY) - d. Jan. 31. 1995 (Miami Beach, FL) Colleagues referred to him as "Mr. Abbott" – a sign of respect that this talented man never discouraged. Originally a Harvard-trained actor, he rose to fame as a playwright, eventually becoming a stage director and musical comedy librettist. In the course of over 130 Broadway productions, Abbott worked with most of the prominent stage talents of his time. His musical comedy career began when he co-directed Richard Rodgers Lorenz Hart 's Jumbo (1935). He worked with the same team on a series of hit shows, staging and co-authoring the librettos for On Your Toes The Boys From Syracuse (1938) and Pal Joey (1940). Abbott gave musical comedy a faster pace and a refreshing dose of modern sophistication.

Overview Mission History Staff ... Links Board of Directors The purpose of the Board of Directors is to carry out The Mission of The Walden School. Ellen Bernard was introduced to the Walden School when her son Whit started attending four years ago. Her younger son, Meade, has attended Walden since 2002, and studies piano with Leo Wanenchak in Baltimore. Ellen and her husband Ed (an executive at T. Rowe Price Associates) have long been supporters of the arts in Baltimore, including development work with the regional theater, Center Stage, where Ed is a board member. Ellen has sung with both the Chestnut Ridge Women's Choir and the Larks, a project of the Junior League of Baltimore, with Leo Wanenchak, Director. She has chaired the Brown Memorial Weekday School and chaired both annual fund and capital campaign efforts at Saint Paul's School in Baltimore. Ellen is an Elder and active member of Second Presbyterian Church, where she leads a lay pastoral counseling program. Ellen and Ed met at Brown University, where Whit began attending as a freshman this past year. Michael Cornog first encountered The Walden School during his 13-year tenure as Headmaster of the Dublin School. Michael Cornog received a B.A. in English from Harvard in 1963, and an M.A.T. in English from Harvard's Graduate School of Education in 1965. He attended a doctoral program in educational administration at Teachers College Columbia University. He was a Teaching Fellow at Phillips Academy Andover and also taught at Lexington High School in Massachusetts.

Victor Borge by: Bruce Johnson Victor Borge passed away December 23. If he was a clown or not depends upon whether you use an exclusive or inclusive style definition of clowning. It is a matter of personal opinion. I personally think he was a masterful clown who used a naturalistic appearance. In any case, clowns could learn a lot by studying his work, which fortunately is well documented by audio and video recordings. I had the pleasure of seeing to of his live performances. At the age of 91, he was still performing. The only adjustment he had to make for age was eliminating the fall off his piano bench. He was the subject of the cover story of The Clown In Times Volume Six Issue Three. Here is some information excerpted from that article. (The original article is much too long to reproduce here.) Victor Borge (Jan. 3, 1909 - Dec. 23, 2000) Victor Borge said, "to people who take music seriously, I'm a musician. To people who don't take music seriously, I'm a comedian. To people who don't take anything seriously, I'm a clown." Whether or not you consider Victor Borge a clown, clowns can learn from him and be inspired by him. For example, one of his routines is to start playing a piece, which doesn't come out right. He takes a closer look at the sheet music, turns it over, resumes playing, and now it sounds right. Arthur Pedlar uses a similar bit in his routine. One of Victor's sons tours with him playing an inept page-turner. Albert Alter plays a similar role in the BozoArts Duo. Victor combines physical comedy, verbal humor, and amazing musical ability.

Drawing on that aspect of history, Founding Rabbi Beryl D. Cohon and Music Director Evelyn Borofsky Roskin initiated Temple Sinai's Annual Passover Music Festival. Music Director Delores Fox Corley carried on the tradition by presenting Passover-related programs including performances of major oratorios on Jewish themes, with chorus, orchestra and soloists.
