Early Career
Perahia was born in New York City , and began playing the piano at four (he claims he didn't start practising seriously until the age of 15). At the age of seventeen, he attended Mannes College , where he studied keyboard, conducting, and composition with his teacher and mentor . During the summer, he also attended Marlboro , where he studied with Rudolf Serkin , and Pablo Casals , amongst others. In , he won the fourth Leeds Piano Competition , helping to cement its reputation for advancing the careers of young pianistic talent. Dr. Fanny Waterman recalls anecdotally (in Wendy Thompson's book Piano Competition: The Story of the Leeds ) that Horszowski had phoned her prior to the competition, announcing that he would enter the winner. Other American contestants had apparently withdrawn their applications upon hearing that Perahia would be competing. In he worked with Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears at the Aldeburgh Festival . He became co-artistic director in , stepping down in Perahia famously held a close acquaintance with an elder Vladimir Horowitz , who had a defining influence on his pianism.

Compensation
BY LLOYD SCHWARTZ There wasn’t a concert I was looking more forward to than pianist Leon Fleisher’s 75th-birthday recital in the FleetBoston Celebrity Series this past Saturday. And though there were numerous musical pleasures during the last couple of weeks, nothing could compensate for the disappointment of Fleisher’s postponement (for "personal reasons"). The BSO offered a different kind of keyboard celebrity, Romanian virtuoso Radu Lupu, playing the Schumann Piano Concerto under guest conductor Christoph von Dohn‡nyi, music director emeritus of the Cleveland Orchestra. Symphony Hall was filled to capacity, and the audience responded warmly. Lupu is an odd player. His Mozart with the BSO has had a tonal delicacy I’ve found too precious, too lacy — the kind of playing that makes people think Mozart is all surface. So I was happy to hear him alternating between his usual filigree and outbursts of real power. This was not quite the effervescent and dynamic concerto I love. The meditative, intimate piano passages seemed less searching than self-absorbed, rather disregarding the orchestra that was attempting to accompanying it. Maestro Dohn‡nyi had his hands full keeping the orchestra together with the soloist.

document.write("") document.write('') document.write("") Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition The Piano Wars
by Rudolph Chelminski A couple of years ago, in Brussels on assignment for Smithsonian , I took a stroll along the rue de la Régence from the Royal Palace and the Royal Museums, and within a couple of minutes I came upon the Royal Conservatory of Music, a typically imposing Bruxellois edifice of cumbrously unidentifiable (but presumably royal) style. Smithsonian (March 2000) I could hardly have come to a better place than this, because placing in the eponymous Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition , founded 50 years ago by Belgium's gracious, music-loving sovereign of the moment, skyrockets the careers of talented young soloists in four disciplines: piano, violin, singing and composition. Every four years one of the disciplines comes around again, and hopeful talents from all over the world flock to Brussels to try their luck. While most competitors are in their mid-20s, at least one, the Romanian pianist Radu Lupu, got in at 16, and the guillotine of the selection committee falls at age 30. The focus is on youth, then, but not babies. Lupu was an exception, explained Cécile Ferrière, then secretary-general of the competition. "We don't want prodigies," she told me in her sunny office opposite the great music barn. "This is the most grueling of competitions, and we demand artists who have reached a certain maturity. We look for more than the circus act of pure technique alone. We're not impressed by Liszts. We get plenty of them in the first elimination round."

Pianist likely a plus in N.Y.
Radu Lupu's performances with orchestra bode well for Carnegie trip
The pianist the Cleveland Orchestra has chosen to star on its four Carnegie Hall programs next week might at first glance by Severance Hall audiences seem an unlikely candidate. The internationally treasured Romanian pianist Radu Lupu looks like a hermit, with his shaggy gray hair and beard and his shy smile. Before getting started for Thursday concerts this week and last, he looked as if he couldn't wait to get started so he could be alone again with the music. And yet he's a terrific communicator who won over the audience each week with the tonal beauty and poise of his seasoned musicianship. Music director Franz Welser-Moest, the orchestra and Lupu have been working their way through all five of Beethoven's piano concertos in Cleveland, giving listeners a preview of their New York programs. While Beethoven is the most familiar of repertoire, the other works on the programs, billed together as a Beethoven Festival, are decidedly not. Thursday's performance of Roy Harris' Symphony No. 3 was the Cleveland Orchestra's first since 1986 of this work, which is widely considered Harris' highest achievement.

Harry Eyres on the most revelatory of living pianists: Radu Lupu A few months ago the visionary Romanian pianist Radu Lupu was `Artist in Focus' on BBC Radio Three's absorbing series Morning Performance. He was one with a difference. Normally artists in focus chat about their lives in music with the avuncular Humphrey Burton. Lupu would rather be skinned alive than chat with a journalist; he has barely given an interview for 30 years. His reticence, or shyness, or whatever else it might be (impatience with inanity, for instance), has inevitably given him the tag of 'recluse' - the J.D. Salinger of pianists. But Lupu is not exactly a recluse in the American sense of someone who hides out in a hotel suite or a remote corner of New England; he gives 80 concerts a year. But his silence has meant that despite his busy concert schedule he has partially disappeared from the talkative world; he is simply not as well known as he should be.
