Radu Lupu
This famous Romenian pianist will be coming to Florence again for a recital dedicated to the music of Schumann, Bartok and Beethoven which will conclude the 1995-96 season and form part of the now regular collaboration with the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino
A reserved personality who dislikes any kind of propaganda or selfpromotion, Radu Lupu is today at the height of his career as a pianist thanks to his exceptional and deeply intense capability for concentration and self-identification in the pages of music he plays. Regularly avoiding press conferences and complimentary advertising drives and fortunately immune from the risk or suspicion of routine, though at a very high level, Radu Lupu's performances in public show that he is a musician of profound and fascinating originality.
Radu Lupu His chamber music recordings include a fine edition of the Sonatas for violin and piano by Mozart con Szymon Goldberg, a record album of lieders, again by Mozart, con Barbara Hendriks, extracts by Mozart and Schubert for piano with four hands with Murray Perahia (with whom he also recorded Mozart's Concerts for two pianos and orchestra). Several recitals have been dedicated to Schubert's Sonatas and Impromtus, together with other record albums dedicated to Beethoven, Schumann and Brahms. Sunday 19th May 1996

Web Search On the Aisle [INDEX] By Philip Anson / November 27, 2000 On the Aisle Daniel Barenboim’s ongoing Perspectives Series at Carnegie Hall offers a total of 16 concerts of his own devising spread over two years. The latest instalment was a four hand piano recital on Nov. 27, 2000, with Barenboim and Romanian pianist Radu Lupu. Commercially, it was a big success. Not only was the hall sold out but the stage was covered with spectators, leaving only a narrow path for the pianists to enter and exit. The concert’s drawing power can be attributed to the two stars, Barenboim and Lupu (each with is own distinct following), as well as the accessible all-Schubert program. The pianists sat side by side on two chairs and switched positions for each of the three pieces. For the opening Variations on an Original Theme in A-flat minor, D. 813 (1824), Barenboim took the top of the keyboard. In this role, he was the designated leader, and Lupu watched him closely. The rather flimsy work has no gripping merit and Barenboim seemed fully occupied sight reading the music in front of him. He ended each variation with the same emphatic flourish, as if to compensate for previous blandness. For Schubert’s Fantasie in F minor, D. 940 (1828), Lupu took the top, and suddenly the music came alive. He produced a gorgeously resonant tone and, unlike Barenboim, he played from inside the music. When the two pianists echoed each other in repeated passages, Lupu impressed one as the more sensitive performer.

I n 1984 young Japanese-Canadian pianist Jon Kimura Parker shot into the spotlight taking the top prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition in Britain. As a laureate of the Leeds Competition he joined the impressive fraternity of past winners which includes Radu Lupu and Murray Perahia. I first heard Parker live about ten years ago in concert with the Edmonton Symphony at the Jubilee Auditorium. Parker has a virile stage presence that immediately commands attention. His performance of Prokofiev's daunting Piano Concerto No 3 was unforgettable. With a rich, round piano tone he communicated both the lyricism and the sometimes furious excitement of the work. He did not hide behind the bravura notes but rather made the music his own and conveyed a genuine understanding of the piece. Since that memorable concerto I have heard Parker once more live with the Edmonton Symphony and several more times on CBC radio. At each hearing my initial impressions are confirmed: here is an artist truly in touch with his musical ideas, expressing them with conviction, ample technical ability and discipline.

Lucerne Piano Festival Report
with other pianists and keyboard players at Piano 2001 KKL Concert Hall, Lucerne 20-25 November 2001 Pletnev at Tonhalle, Zurich 26 November 2001(PGW)
Lucerne's late autumn annual festival is dedicated to the piano and to showing to what advantage it can be heard in the new KKL Concert Hall , which provides the possibility for acoustical tuning of the auditorium to each artist's own preference by adjustments to the reflective canopy over the stage and to the reverberation chamber's doors, a speciality of ARTEC . For musicians, numerous testimonials describe the rare pleasure of being able to hear their own playing very much as it sounds to the audience, which makes them eager to return to Lucerne. During the week I took the opportunity to sample seating positions in many parts of the hall, right up to the high fourth gallery. It is good for listening everywhere, with absolute clarity and projection of the quietest pianissimo , but I found the best sound towards the centre at each level.
