Description:
In 1862 came the radical turnabout: Tchaikovsky resigned from his position as a civil servant and enrolled at the St. Petersburg Conservatoire to study composition under Anton Rubinstein and Nikolai Zaremba. In 1866 he began teaching composition at the Moscow Conservatoire, where he remained for 12 years. It was during this intensive and especially productive period of composition that he wrote his first great works. However, his productivity was overshadowed by major problems: in order to counterbalance rumours concerning his homosexuality, Tchaikovsky rushed into marriage with one of his students. This resulted in chaos, inner despair and, finally, a suicide attempt.
Kent Nagano
Kent Nagano is a member of the Russian National Orchestra Conductor Collegium and has served as artistic director for several RNO commissioning projects. Renowned for his gifted interpretations of both the orchestral and operatic repertoire, he is Chief Conductor of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Principal Conductor of the Los Angeles Opera and Music Director of the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra. Starting in 2006, he will become Generalmusikdirektor of the Bayerische Staatsoper.

Rachmaninoff
Challenge Classics CC72057 (63 minutes: DDD)
The Etudes-tableaux, representing the continuation of the transcendental concept of the etude in the works of Liszt and Lyapunov, are among Rachmaninoff's finest piano works, and yet they remain relatively overlooked on record. Perhaps the answer lies in their extreme difficulty - both technically and interpretatively they demand a pianist of the highest calibre to do them justice. Nikolai Lugansky, who made these recordings in 1992, is certainly such an artist. He is highly attuned to the complexities of Rachmaninoff's style and has a spectacular technique that is more than equal to the cruel snowstorm of the E flat minor, Op.33 No.6, and the fleet repetitions of the A minor, Op.39 No.6. Everything is accomplished with unquestionable mastery and a minimum of fuss, recalling the distinguished style of such interpreters as Andrei Gavrilov, and even the exalted pianism of Rachmaninoff himself. Throughout, the poetic imagery of this music is to the fore; the notes are given meaning within a narrative context and Lugansky's command of sonority keeps the listener attuned to the fine gradations of tone he produces. There is much spontaneity of nuance; at the same time these interpretations sound carefully crafted and the outcome of a genuine emotional identification between composer and interpreter. A rhapsodic structure such as the C minor, Op.39 No.7 is given weight, poise and purpose where in other hands it can appear merely a collection of diverse vignettes. When the heroic style is called for, as in the E flat Etude of Op.33, Lugansky certainly does not disappoint; his playing is incisive and large-scale, with plenty of glitter and power.

Thursday, December 4, 2003 Meet the next great Russian pianist Former child prodigy Nikolai Lugansky lives 'inside of this music'
By Janelle Gelfand
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Nikolai Lugansky

He's just 31, but already Nikolai Lugansky is being called "the next one" in the line of great Russian pianists. Lugansky will make his Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra debut playing Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 4 this weekend. Modest and easy-going over the phone from his home in Moscow, the pianist says there was never a turning point when he knew music would be his life. "I became a concert pianist before I thought about it," says Lugansky. "When you study in (Moscow's) Central Music School and you're 7 years old, you've already played in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, one of the best halls of Russia. If you are good, you play more and more in other cities. Then, you play abroad. ... So it starts before a young man thinks what he wants to be. It became my life." Whether or not he plays in the style of legendary Russian pianists like Emil Gilels or Sviatoslav Richter - the latter one of his idols - is a moot point. Lugansky's recordings of Rachmaninoff and Chopin on the Erato label reveal an exciting technique - as well as sensitivity, color and transparency.

Most of the Italian composers of the Nineteenth century were taught the tradition of sacred music from childhood. Although most chose to concentrate on opera for their mature compositions, Rossini (and Verdi, obviously) still had a love and longing to express himself musically on that which he was raised on. Thus we have the Stabat Mater, a glorious work that while, sacred in intention, is so filled with the orchestration and melody that Rossini gave to all his operatic compositions that any of the individual movements or arias could easily have been integrated into any of his operas.

After one of his concert appearances in Atlanta, I briefly spoke to Joshua Bell, suggesting he depart from standard violin fare and look at the unplayed Concerto in D by Reynaldo Hahn or perhaps the Martinu Concerto. He does sport a wonderful violin tone, and several of his chamber music inscriptions, like those he did for Musical Heritage Society, are of enduring, musical value. But when this disc arrived, some fifty-minutes-plus of musical saccharine packaged as high-art encores, I really felt my hackles rise. Maybe yuppies looking to get lucky on a romantic evening will treasure these morsels and opera-aria transcriptions, but please don't invite me over. To be trapped in an elevator with classical mus-ack is only a slippery step from my feelings about rap music. Keep the cellophane on this one.

Its spellbinding solo part is taken by the young Russian pianist Nikolai Lugansky who has attracted many critical superlatives.
Stravinsky's ballet Pulcinella is one of his most magical works, full of Italian grace, wit and other worldly serenity. ELENA KUSCHNEROVA Elena Kuschnerova was the last pianistic discovery of Harold Schonberg (1915-2003), music critic for the New York Times and prolific author on great performers. After listening to her debut CD, he dubbed her a "Pianist who grabs the imagination", and he lauded her Scriabin CD as "the best recorded performances I am familiar with" (American Record Guide, 2000 and 2001). Earlier, Kuschnerova's Prokofiev CD (1997) had been awarded the prestigious "German Record Critics' Award (Preis der Deutschen Schalplattenkritik). A year later it was included on a list of the 50 best "desert island" piano recordings of all time by the German music magazine SCALA. In its 70-year history, the Penguin Guide, the world's most venerated source of classical reviews, has bestowed fewer than two dozen Rosettes on piano recordings, a distinction that eluded many of history's most famous pianists. The most recent of these was awarded to Elena Kuschnerova's all-Bach Recital (2001) in the Penguin Guide's 2003/04 issue. The team of Penguin reviewers admonished readers to "make no mistake, this disc... is altogether outstanding. Indeed it is one of the finest Bach recitals on the piano... the present recital leaves the listener feeling exhilarated and purified as only the best Bach playing can." Elena Kuschnerova is the only performing artist affiliated with the great and controversial Russian composer
