  • What a Good Technique achieves
  • Outline of the Piano Technique Course ... Jazclass Links PT 1 - What about Technique ? The very word technique (or 'method') suggests a cold, mechanical and rather unmusical activity.
Some students regard technique as something that can only stifle their creativity, and use this as a convenient excuse to ignore this aspect completely.
The opposite is of course true. A poor instrumental technique will restrict your creative potential enormously. Technique is just a label. Behind it hides one of the most intimate relationships a musician can ever have. When a student comes face to face with his instrument for the first time the two meet as complete strangers.
The immediate objective is to get to know each other and to start building a winning team. But in order to come together change is required.
    • Each instrument has its unique soul and temperament (perhaps reflecting that of it's original maker ?). However an instrument does not have a mind or a living body, and therefore can not change its ways.

Hungarian composer and pianist. Hungarian Ferenc Liszt Encouraged by his father, who was a talented amateur musician, Liszt developed an early interest in music and began composing at age eight. He studied piano with Karl Czerny and composition with Antonio Salieri in Vienna, making his debut there in 1822. After a Paris success in 1823, he toured Europe, but his father's early death (1828) and a disastrous love affair led to a desire to give up music for the priesthood. Hearing violinist perform in 1831, Liszt was inspired to develop his own technique to the utmost and to compose his first mature pieces, including the (1837) and Richard Wagner . Liszt's brilliance and success were at their peak during the 1840s, when he toured Europe as a virtuoso, earning great adulation for his panache and his astounding technique. He ceased concertizing in the late 1840s to devote himself to composition and furthering the work of progressive composers. In the 1850s he wrote many of his most ambitious works, including A Faust Symphony (1854) and the Piano Sonata in B Minor (1853). In 1865 he took minor Roman Catholic church orders, though he never became a priest. His later output is remarkable in anticipating many 20th-century developments; for instance, his development of chromatic harmony influenced atonal music.

(born October 22, 1811, died July 31, 1886) Jill: Mr. Liszt, I don't mean to be rude, but why are you in quarantine. I mean, I don't get it. Liszt : Jill, this is not a rude question and I appreciate having you and your friends asking me questions. O.K., I am in quarantine because at this point in history (1847), Constantinople is still a "closed" country. In other words, it is extremely difficult to be able to travel to this exciting city, and one must deal with the official red tape and immigration rules that govern traveling here. Jill: Cool, I guess my next question is how you came to give some concerts here in the first place.

On the particular piece 'Improvisations on la Folia' is said at the same page: We have no surviving 16th-century choreography for the Folia melody, which was widely known and popular for almost three centuries. Dancers may improvise, as musicians love to do, to the haunting little strain or simply to its bass. You do not have to be a musicologist or a great analyser of 16th Century dances to recognize instantly in 'improvisations on la Folia' the later Folia-theme which was introduced (ok, i make an exception for Falconieri ) by Lully in 1672. The subtitle 'flowers of the 16th Century Italian Dance Music' is absolutely incorrect. I wonder what kind of dance is picked for this Baroque music pur sang and clearly intended for a listening audience the delicate way it is played. However the Folia theme (a nice blending of the Gallot and Ruiz de Ribayaz ) sounds great on the Chitaronne.

This page hosted by Get your own Free Home Page A Romantic icon and one of the first proponents of the orchestral tone poem, Franz Liszt was an unparalleled keyboard virtuoso and a supremely talented and innovative composer. He was also renowned as a mercurial personality and bandit of love; in short, like the flamboyant violinist Niccolo Paganini, Liszt lived the Romantic ideal to the hilt. He was born in Hungary in 1811, and began to study the piano at the age of six. He exhibited unusual talent on the instrument, and gave a number of successful concerts while still a child. After continuing his piano studies with the help of Hungarian nobility, he moved with his family to Vienna, where he studied with Carl Czerny and the now-infamous Antonio Salieri. He made more concert appearances, and audiences took to his passionate and technically immaculate playing. Next was Paris, where, at the age of 16, he decided to take up long-term residence. Liszt's fame as a piano virtuoso grew; in 1831 he was lucky enough to see the violinist Paganini in performance, and that experience (Paganini's gifts on the violin were so breathtaking that many people believed he was in league with the devil) made a profound impact on the young pianist; he resolved to apply Paganini's showmanship and pyrotechnics to the piano, and in so doing revolutionized the piano as a virtuosic instrument. Liszt's life reads a bit like a chapter out of Don Juan . Flamboyant in dress and manner, he carried out innummerable minor love affairs and two major ones - first with the Countess Marie d'Agoult, and later with the Princess Carolyne von Sayn-Wittgenstein, who worked with him while he was Court Music Director at Weimar. At the age of 48, after living the high life for three decades, he suddenly entered the priesthood, thereafter splitting his musical activities between Rome, Weimar and Budapest; he was conferred the religious title of

NAXOS 8.557170 I have to confess that Liszt’s transcriptions for piano of Beethoven’s symphonies were completely new to me so this disc has proved a complete surprise. My first reaction is that Beethoven’s supreme inventiveness is equally clear in these transcriptions as it is in their original versions; that is also a tribute to Liszt. These works must be extremely taxing for the performer as there’s no let up in them. Liszt does his utmost to have the piano cover as much of the orchestra’s role as is possible, and pretty well succeeds.
