Franz Liszt: Etude de Concert No 3 "Un Sospiro"
Composed by Franz Liszt Peter Aberle, pianist Listen to MP3 Notes: Among serious classical pianists, the following claim is almost a dogma: Franz Liszt was the greatest pianist that ever lived (1831-1886). In this recording, Peter Aberle plays one of Liszt's more difficult etudes, "Un Sospiro". IMHO, "Un Sospiro" is the most beautiufl work that Liszt ever wrote and don't forget that Liszt is the best pianist who has ever lived (at least according to the old guard classical pianists). I guess what I am saying is take a listen. Aberle does an excellent job, btw.

He lived with Mme d'Agoult (better known by her pen name, Daniel Stern) from 1833 to 1844, and they had three children; their daughter Cosima became the wife of Hans von BUlow and later of Wagner . As a piano virtuoso, Liszt enthralled his audiences with his expressive interpretations and grand style of playing, augmented with dramatic gestures. In 1848 he decided to make a career as a composer, and became musical director to the duke of Weimar. He remained at Weimar until 1859, and two years later went to Rome, where he became an abbE (1865). During the years between 1880 and 1885, in Rome, Weimar, and Budapest, he taught most of the famous pianists of the succeeding generation. In his compositions he favored program music over traditional musical forms.

Liszt’s megalomania only extended to attempting to transcribe orchestral and choral forces to the piano, but not over-elaborating on the score nor altering the structure of the music. As such, the bare bones of the music may still be savoured even without experiencing the colours of the orchestra or the warmth of the chorus. That’s when a pianist’s imagination in phrasing and ability to bring certain lines of the music to life becomes paramount; anything less would be a meaningless run through.

Nosikova, who teaches piano at the UI School of Music, will play "The Second Year: Italy" from Liszt's "Annees de Pelerinage" (Years of Pilgrimage). Her recital will be free and open to the public. Franz Liszt was one of the greatest pianists, and most influential musicians, of the 19th century. Displaying both an astonishing technique and an extravagant personality, he created a sensation in his performances. One of the first musical super-stars, he was largely responsible for the ideal of the flamboyant virtuoso. He was also an important and original composer who wrote orchestral tone poems, songs and sacred choral music in addition to his many difficult virtuoso show pieces for piano. Liszt worked on the "Annees de Pelerinage" almost constantly throughout his life. The first pieces were published as early as 1836, when the composer was 25 years old, and the final book was published in 1883, three years before Liszt's death. Thus it is the only work that spans his lifetime, from his years of study in Paris, to his years as a traveling virtuoso, and his later years in Weimar and Rome. In its entirety, the "Annees de Pelerinage" is considered a musical self-portrait that covers many aspects of Liszt's personality.

FRANZ LISZT (1811-1886)
Schubert March transcriptions
Excerpts from the sleeve notes Paris, March 1831, and the talk of the French capital was the appearance of ‘the hitherto unrivalled Paganini’. The Times correspondent was at a loss as to how to describe the phenomenon. ‘He has performed thrice at the Académie Royale de Musique, and each time with increasing applause. Language cannot do justice to his wonderful exertion. […] New powers are given to the instrument, which even the most eminent musicians declare, they were not aware was in its compass. He plays entirely from memory, without the intervention of a desk between him and his enchanted listeners. His appearance is singular and denotes the enthusiast [sic]. Strong black hair curls in profusion round his face, which is of an ashy paleness. His eyes flash fire, his nostrils appear distended, and could we hide the organ from which he produces such magic tones, he would be an excellent representative of a prophet foretelling the future.’ This, then, is the background to the composition of the Six Grandes Etudes de Paganini. The first fruit of his Paganini-inspired labours was the Grande Fantaisie de bravoure sur La Clochette de Paganini (S420) which appeared in 1832. It utilises material from the last movement of Paganini’s Violin Concerto No 2 in B minor. Its main theme, itself based on an old Italian melody, is familiar from Paganini’s inclusion of a little bell in the score (hence its nickname of ‘La Clochette’ and, in Liszt’s later study using the same theme, ‘La Campanella’). The ‘Clochette’ fantasy remains one of the most extraordinarily difficult works ever written for the piano but, as Busoni noted, ‘ the work shows an original mind peeping through, a constrained emotion struggling for expression’. There are spiccato effects and terrifying leaps with which Liszt sought to simulate Paganini’s dizzying violin feats.

Performing Arts Library IPAM Traditions Liszt and His Pupils Franz Liszt was born in Raiding, Hungary on October 22, 1811. There were three main periods of Liszt's life. His first was primarily as a pianist (childhood to 1847). The second was a period of composition and promotion (1848 to 1861) and the third was devoted to composition and education. His initial piano study was at the hand of his father, Adam Liszt. Liszt's first public performance took place at the age of nine. His performance garnered him the interest and support of some Hungarian noblemen who funded his studies for the next few years. Liszt then moved to Vienna where he studied under Czerny. While in Vienna, Liszt met Beethoven and Schubert. In 1827, Liszt's father died and he began to provide for his mother through frequent public concerts. In 1833, Liszt met Countess Marie d'Agoult, with whom he had a lengthy relationship and had three children. Liszt continued to tour throughout Europe and his excursions from 1838 to 1847 were highly praised. From 1848 to 1861, Liszt published the Transcendental Etudes, Paganini Etudes, Hungarian Rhapsodies, twelve Symphonic Poems, the Faust and Dante Symphonies and other works. In 1849, Liszt settled in Weimar to conduct the Court Theater for twelve years. During his Weimar years and until his death, liszt offered frequent master classes that were attended by countless aspiring pianists from all over the world. At the same time, his piano works took on a much more experimental and less virtuosic character than previously. He died in Bayreuth, Germany on July 31, 1886.

Franz Liszt collection. 1841-1883. 20 letters from Liszt; 1 letter to Liszt and other material.
Franz Liszt, Hungarian composer and pianist, was born in Raiding near Sopron on 22 October 1811. He made his debut at the age of nine and subsequently studied in Vienna with Czerny and Sallieri. Later on in Paris he came to know all the principal artistic figures of the period and was influenced by Hector Berlioz, Frederic Chopin and Nicolo Paganini. He lived with Mme. D'Agoult (better known by her pen name, Daniel Stern) between 1833 and 1844 and they had three children. Their daughter Cosima became the wife of Hans von Bülow and later married Wagner.
Liszt's reputation as a performer rests mainly on the great tours of Europe and Asia Minor which he undertook between 1838 and 1847. In 1848 he was persuaded by Princess Carolyne von Sayn-Wittgenstein, sister of the Tsar of Russia, to give up his career as a travelling virtuoso and to concentrate upon composition. He accepted an appointment to settle at Weimar where he lived with the Princess for the next twelve years, a period during which he wrote or revised most of the major works for which he is known.
