wmcbooks@ipa.net or starchaser-m@geocities.com Franz Liszt "Franz Liszt (1811-1886) was handsome, magnetic. irresistible to women, and an incredible showman, and a pacesetter in musical history. During the 1840s, he performed superhuman feats at the piano, overwhelming the European public and impressing musicians as much as concertgoers. "Chopin wished that he could play his own piano etudes the way Liszt did. Schumann wrote that Liszt "enmeshed every member of the audience with his art and did with them as he willed." Brahms later said, "Whoever has not heard Liszt cannot speak of piano playing." "Liszt was born in Hungary; his father was an administrator for the Esterhazy family (which Haydn had also served). At age eleven, Liszt studied in Vienna, where he met Schubert and Beethoven; during his teens and twenties, he lived in Paris, a city where romanticism flourished and a mecca for virtuosos. When he was nineteen and already acclaimed, Liszt was awed by the great violinist Paganini, who drove audiences into a frenzy and was half suspected of being in league with the devil. Young Liszt was determined to become the Paganini of the piano. He withdrew from the concert stage for a few years, practiced from eight to twelve hours a day, and emerged as probably the greatest pianist of his time. "To display his incomparable mastery, Liszt composed his

CRISTOFORI CF-885: MARTIN BERKOFSKY PLAYS FRANZ LISZT MARTIN BERKOFSKY-FRANZ LISZT-ASSISTANCE IN HEALTH CARE Assistance in Health Care, Inc., was started in 1983 by a concerned group of individuals who saw that cancer patients, and their families, were struggling not only to combat cancer, but to survive the economic toll the battle takes. Because of the prolonged nature of the treatment, fighting cancer takes financial resources many patients and their families simply do not have. It became clear to this founding group, as it has to the many volunteer members of A.I.H.C. and the many more individuals and businesses that have made donations, that people need help at the most basic level: with money for gas, for groceries, for the bills that pile up while the patient is unable to work. The stress induced by not having enough money for basic necessities is considerable. A.I.H.C. helps relieve some of it, in an area where even the smallest amounts can make a big difference. In the fall of the year 2000, the pianist Martin Berkofsky was treated at Cancer Treatment Centers of America. He returned from his stay with a suitcase stuffed with rubber noses, monstrous green plastic gloves and other relics of his humor class and a renewed outlook on life; a heightened sensitivity to others and the conviction that caring works, and works at every level. He also returned with a commitment to help other cancer patients. Helping A.I.H.C. is a natural. The founder of the Cristofori Foundation, he too seeks to relieve persons of financial distress. With solo performances, ensemble concerts, and the sales of compact discs such as this, he has helped the homeless, a neighbor pay for a heart transplant, Albanian refugees at the height of their crisis, a blind girl in Macedonia trying to educate herself.

After completing the composition of the Concerto in 1849, Liszt gave the premiere of the Concerto No. 1 in E f Major for Piano and Orchestra in Weimar on February 17, 1855, with Liszt at the piano and Hector Berlioz conducting. An important fact to take into consideration during the years 1830 -1860 is that Liszt expanded his use of "thematic transformation," and this use is evident in this Concerto. Many critics have remarked that the opening theme of the Concerto is not a theme at all, that it is just an empty phrase; in truth, this piece is built on this first theme and everything depends on it. Robert Collet remarks that "Bartók regarded it as 'the first perfect realization of cyclic sonata form, with common themes treated on the variation principle'the 'variation principle' being, of course, Liszt's own technique of the 'metamorphosis of themes'."

As pianist, composer and personality, Franz Liszt (b.1811) strides across the whole of the nineteenth century and is seminal in his influence on the twentieth. Although Liszt was born along with the first generation of romantic composers (Berlioz, Chopin, Schumann and Mendelssohn), he outlived them all to become a friend of Wagner and proponent of the "music of the future."
Franz Liszt was born in Hungary to a father who worked for the Esterhazy family, and who soon recognized his son's prodigious gifts. After studies with Czerny and Salieri in Vienna in 1821, Liszt quickly made a name as a piano virtuoso, performing in London and Paris. By fourteen, he had written Don Sanche, an operetta that was produced in Paris. Here he lived from 1823 to 1835, becoming friends with leading literary figures and painters as well as with Berlioz and Chopin. These two composers along with Paganini, who he heard with amazement in 1831, were the primary influences in forming Lizst's complex aesthetic character.

Franz Liszt: The ultimate Romantic 1811-1886
The stadium crowd is restless, and begins to chant the name of the superstar musician with whom they've come to howl. A spotlight cuts its way onto the dark stage, and, the crowd roaring, into the light bounds the glitzily dressed superstar - Franz Liszt. Ken Russell's intentionally tasteless 1975 film ``Lisztomania' outraged film critics and music lovers, but it did serve a useful purpose. The movie observed Liszt, the 19th century's most popular, virtuosic and daring pianist-composer, in terms of a 20th-century rock star. It may have been a rotten film, but it recognized that Liszt, the ultimate Romantic artist, was a man who would have fit comfortably into our own era. Lisztomania was the term actually used in the 1840s to describe the public idolatry of this phenomenal pianist. In the early 1820s he had begun touring Europe as a child prodigy. Later, unlike Mozart, he was able to parlay his adolescent popularity into a wildly successful adult career. In 1848 he became the music director at the ducal court in Weimar, where he served for 12 years. Liszt turned Weimar into a center for contemporary music, leading the local orchestra and opera troupe in many premieres of his own and other composers' works, especially those of Wagner and Berlioz. He also championed the music of dead composers, particularly Beethoven. This was also the period of his most intense composition.

Franz Liszt
The Hungarian pianist and composer Franz Liszt is regarded as the founder of the solo piano recital. Many people consider Liszt as the greatest pianist of all time.
Liszt already left his native country at an early age. In Vienna he was given theory lessons by Salieri, the teacher and great competitor of Mozart. In 1823 he moved to Paris. Paris held an enormous attraction for all kinds of artists, both visual artists and musicians and composers. In 1836 the young Liszt won a piano competition and this meant the start of a long and successful career.
For a very long time his fame as a pianist was greater than his fame as a composer.
Liszt toured across Europe until 1847. There were long line-ups at the entrance of the concert halls if Franz Liszt gave a concert. One of Liszt's specialties was transcribing melodies of other composers. For example, the piano virtuoso could play extremely difficult improvisations of opera melodies which were popular in those days.
From 1847 he received financial support and protection from Princess Carolyne von Sayn-Wittgenstein, whom he had met during a Russian concert trip. She remained his closest and most influential companion for the rest of his life. Now Liszt could dedicate himself completely and without worries to composing. In Weimar Liszt started a training course for young pianists and composers. He was an idealist: many of his pupils were given free lessons.

Introduction
Franz Liszt, a Hungarian composer who lived from 1811 to 1886 was the equivalent of a rock star in his day. His piano compositions were extremely popular and he often gave concerts to his multitude of fans. Liszt was also the pioneer of many musical techniques, including the symphonic poem and the technique of transforming themes.
Historical Context
Liszt was born in Doborjan, Hungary in 1811. From an early age, Franz exhibited a remarkable affinity for music and especially piano. When Franz was 6 years old, Adam Liszt (Franz's father) noticed his interest and proficiency in music. A year later, in 1818, Adam Liszt began giving his son piano lessons. Only one year later, Franz Liszt displayed a remarkable ability to play difficult music and even improvise! Soon, Franz Liszt moved to Vienna and was taught by Czerny from 1822 to 1823. At the tender age of 12, Liszt gave his first concert and started earning a name as a remarkable pianist. For the rest of his life, Liszt lived a relatively stable life in Paris, giving frequent concerts and writing frequent compositions. During this long period of creation, Liszt was able to formulate a wide variety of musical techniques that would be used by many composers after his death. Liszt's general style of composition was in using
