From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Franz Liszt Hungarian Liszt Ferenc October 22 July 31 ) was a Hungarian virtuoso pianist and composer . He is widely considered to be one of the greatest virtuosi of all time. Franz Liszt Liszt studied and played at Vienna and Paris and for most of his life toured throughout Europe giving concerts. His virtuosity earned him approbations by composers and performers alike throughout Europe . His great generosity with both time and money benefitted the lives of many people: victims of disasters, orphans and the many students he taught for free. He also contributed to the Beethoven memorial fund. His piano compositions include works such as his Piano Sonata in B minor , and two piano concertos , which have entered the standard repertoire. He also made many exuberant piano transcriptions of operas , famous symphonies , and Schubert Lieder . As would be expected from a pianist-composer of Liszt's virtuosity, many of his piano compositions are amongst the most technically challenging in the repertoire.

Liszt was born on October 22, 1811, in the village of Raiding, near Sopron. He studied the piano first with his father, then with the Austrian pianist Carl Czerny in Vienna, where he also studied theory with the Italian composer Antonio Salieri . In 1823 he moved with his parents to Paris, where he soon established himself as a pianist. Meanwhile, he took composition lessons from the Italian opera composer Ferdinando Pa«r and the Czech-French composer and theorist Anton Reicha.

Franz Liszt (1811 - 1886) Franz Liszt was a virtuoso pianist, composer and Romantic artist par excellence. He is remembered today mainly for his important contributions to piano technique and repertoire. A child prodigy, the young Liszt toured Europe under the guidance of his father (an amateur musician), showing off his amazing pianistic talent. A turning point came when, in his early twenties, Liszt heard the virtuoso violinist Paganini perform. He decided from then on that he would dedicate himself to doing for the piano what Paganini had done for the violin. After isolating himself in intense practice he finally succeeded admirably in that goal, writing a number of works of hither-to unheard-of difficulty, many actually inspired by Paganini's Caprices. Using his own compositions and virtuoso fantasies based on contemporary operas, Liszt took Europe, Russia and Turkey by storm as a soloist. After reaching the highest levels of society and receiving the endorsement of royalty from every European nation, Liszt abruptly gave up the stressful life of a touring concert artist and settled down, at age 37, to other artistic pursuits. The period that followed was a very fruitful one for Liszt. He extensively revised many of his earlier piano pieces to give them more musical and poetic depth, in the process often greatly reducing their technical demands. He also set to work on a number of new and major compositions, including the Sonata in B Minor for piano and symphonies inspired by Goethe's Faust and Dante's Divine Comedy. Finally, he pioneered a new genre of orchestral music, the “symphonic poem”. These works were extensions of his earlier character pieces for piano, and are intended to depict a poetic or dramatic scene in symphonic terms. Liszt was a deeply philosophical man, and much of his music was inspired directly by the poets and writers he admired, including Byron, Goethe, Lamartine and Senancour.

Liszt made his public debut when he was nineteen years old. Soon afterwards prince Esterhazy heard him and was much impressed. Funds were raised for a serious musical education and Liszt went to Vienna to study composition with Salieri and piano with Czerny. After two years he was set to pursue his studies at the conservatory in Paris, but Cherubini, then the director of that institution, refused to admit him because he was a foreigner. After a further private eduction he played at the houses of rich families and in 1824 he made his debut in London. He caused a sensation and soon played at Drury Lane and before George IV.
The experience of seeing him perform usually put his audiences in Paris in a state ecstasy and when in 1830 he met Paganini, Berlioz and Chopin, they inspired him to exploit his romantic spirit and to find his own style as a composer.
The duchess d'Agoult left her husband in 1833 to follow Liszt and their liaison resulted in three children: Blandine, Cosima and Daniel. They separated in 1839. Under her writer's name Daniel Stern, Marie D'Agoult published the novel "Nélida", relating her relationship with Liszt. He probably never forgave her for doing so. Among Liszt's many other affairs with women was the one with Lola Montez, ending in Liszt locking Montez into a hotel room and running away himself.

How we work: Franz Liszt, composer/pianist
Liszt was a flamboyant performer: one of the first to improve the recital as spectacle by turning his piano sideways, he'd played in green silk gloves , and later leave them for the swooning, jewelry-tossing ladies in the audience to fight over. He advised his students to read a book while practicing. The advantage of reading a book while practicing for pure technique alone is that it enables us to forget the boredom of playing a passage over and over again, a dozen, or fifty or a hundred times until the body has absorbed it. Not all books, however, lend themselves equally well to this employment. Poetry interferes subtly with the rhythm of the music, and so does really admirable prose. The most useful, I have found for myself, are detective stories, sociology and literary criticism. However, any reading matter that distracts the mind without engaging the sense or the emotions too powerfully will work.
