zz0203 Valentina Lisitsa
Dmitri (Dmitriyevich) Shostakovich

b St. Petersburg, 25 Sept 1906; d Moscow, 9 Aug 1975)
Festive Overture
The gestation of Shostakovich's Festive Overture has been subject to several different theories. One author claims that it was originally written in 1947, but was suppressed by Shostakovich along with many of his compositions created during this repressive period of Soviet history. Others believe that the celebratory quality of the overture displays Shostakovich's relief at the death of Josef Stalin (in 1953), whose regime had twice censored the composer and his music. Most probably, the work was commissioned for a gathering at the Bolshoi Theater in November of 1954, celebrating the 37th Anniversary of the October Revolution. The conductor, Vasili Nebolsin, realized that he had no appropriate piece to open the high-profile concert. He approached Shostakovich, who was at the time a musical consultant at the Bolshoi. The composer set to work, and the overture was completed in three days, the individual pages of the score being taken by courier before the ink had dried to copyists waiting at the theater to create the orchestra parts. Although written in haste, the Festive Overture has proved to be one of Shostakovich's most frequently performed works. He completely grasped the sense of occasion and requirements implicit in the commission. The brilliant orchestration, the exuberant mood, and the infectious high spirits of the overture have guaranteed its place as an effective concert opener and audience pleaser. At the 1980 Moscow Olympics the opening fanfares of the overture were used to announce the start of each day's events.

It is a masterly touch to round off Carneiro's dazzling performance. Guardian (London, England) (...) a formidable reading of these major works (...) extremely precious for its quality of interpretation. Le Monde (Paris, France)
(...) Pedro Carneiro, who is, except the obvious choice of Maria João Pires, the most preeminent Portuguese performer of today in the international circuit.
O Público (Lisbon, Portugal) Pedro Carneiro is one of the very few percussion players to have made an international career as a soloist, and has established himself as one of the world's foremost solo percussionists, performing regularly throughout Europe, the Far East and the USA.
Carneiro's extensive repertoire ranges from his own solo marimba transcriptions of Bach, Schumann and Bartók; 20th century classics by Stockhausen, Carter and Xenakis; several specially commissioned concerti by acclaimed composers worldwide; to world premières envolving percussion and live computer interaction. His future plans include a collaboration with the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra in Vilnius, with a programme featuring Haydn, Stravinsky and two contemporary marimba concerti.
Now at the age of 30, Carneiro has performed the world première of over 70 works by leading composers worldwide and appears regularly with a wide range of acclaimed musicians such as the harpsichordist Elisabeth Chojnacka, cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras, pianists Valentina Lisitsa and Artur Pizarro, the Chilingirian and Shanghai string quartets, composers Steve Reich, Egberto Gismonti, James Dillon, Emmanuel Nunes and Django Bates.
