Several symphony patrons remarked on how well Cooper melded the precise and distinctive orchestra sounds with Lisitsa's piano playing. The pianist's deep musical understanding was noted by several symphony-goers Sunday afternoon. Frieda Owen of Parkersburg said Lisitsa combined the strength of a male pianist with the delicacy of a female pianist to present a dazzling performance. Symphony Society board member Susan Christopher of Vienna saw Lisitsa perform six years ago in Chicago. She believes the young pianist has gotten even better since then and put on an amazing show.

Eschenbach back for big weekend at Ravinia
August 5, 2005 BY WYNNE DELACOMA Classical Music Christoph Eschenbach, former music director of the Ravinia Festival, will be back on the podium in Highland Park, conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in a weekend of blockbusters. At 8 tonight the program is all Brahms, with American pianist Tzimon Barto as soloist in the composer's two piano concertos. Beethoven's iconic Ninth Symphony is the main event at 7:30 p.m. Saturday preceded by Bruch's Violin Concerto with Erik Schumann as soloist. Vocal soloists in the Beethoven symphony include soprano Erin Wall, contralto Meredith Arwady, tenor Joseph Kaiser and Robert Pomakov. Eschenbach closes his Ravinia weekend with Bruckner's Symphony No. 8 at 7 p.m. Sunday. After the concert, he and Barto will join forces as a piano duo for a short recital in Ravinia's Martin Theatre. Pavilion admission is $20-$40 tonight and Sunday, $20-$60 on Saturday. Lawn admission is $10. The postlude concert is free for lawn or pavilion ticket holders.

Amtrak Grant Park Music Festival BY WYNNE DELACOMA Classical Music Critic The Grant Park Orchestra's coming summer season will doubtless be a bit quieter than last year when the orchestra moved, amid justifiable fanfare, to its new home, the Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park. With that move to the acoustically superior, visually appealing facility designed by Frank Gehry, the long-established orchestra finally had a home worthy of its talents. Attendance at the free concerts, co-sponsored by the Chicago Park District and the city's Cultural Affairs Department, was up more than 60 percent, compared with previous seasons. After the Pritzker Pavilion opened on July 16, the orchestra sometimes played for close to 300,000 listeners. The fanfare may have died down, but the 2005 Grant Park Music Festival continues its emphasis on inventive, attractive programming. The season of 32 concerts, which opens June 15 and closes Aug. 20, offers a blend of new and more familiar works from Mozart to Leonard Bernstein.

Philharmonic closes season with `Russian Romantics'
The Las Vegas Philharmonic will present an evening of "Russian Romantics," with works by Dmitri Kabalevsky, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, May 8. Guest artist, pianist Valentina Lisitsa, joins the orchestra for its final concert of the 2003-04 season at 8 p.m. May 8 in Artemus Ham Hall on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway. Tickets are $25, $40 and $60 and can be purchased by calling the UNLV Performing Arts Center box office, 895-2787. The box office is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Widely known and respected as a duo-pianist alongside her husband Alexei Kuznetsoff, Lisitsa brings to the concert stage a rare technical mastery. Born in Kiev, Lisitsa presented her first solo recital at the age of 6. A graduate of the famed Kiev Conservatory, she has won numerous international prizes, such as the Murray Dranoff Two Piano Competition, Concertino Prague, the Lysenko Piano Competition, the Paris Chamber Music Competition and the Ukrainian Chamber Music Competition. Since making her New York debut in 1995 at the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center with Gerard Schwartz conducting, she has maintained an active international schedule in recital and with orchestras, including a U.S. tour with the Orchestre National de France.
