Pianist promises her best, no matter the venue By Michael Rydzynski
For Irvine World News It's not often an orchestra schedules works by two composers sharing a common theme. It's even rarer for a soloist to be involved in both. But that's the case with pianist Valentina Lisitsa, who makes her Irvine debut Saturday collaborating for the first time with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra and music director Carl St. Clair in Sergei Rachmaninov's 'Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini," Op. 43, and Franz Liszt's "Totentanz" (dance of death). The orchestra and St. Clair also will offer Emmanuel Chabrier's "Espana" and Maurice Ravel's "Bolero," arguably each composer's most popular work.

RAGTIME: The Musical

Music by Stephen Flaherty. Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. 1996 Toronto Cast. Ted Sperling, cond.
RCA Victor 68629-2 (CD only). 1996. Jay David Saks, prod.; James P. Nichols, eng. DDD. TT: 62:07 In my full review of Ragtime , I called it my personal Recording of the Year, so I'd be less than consistent if I didn't also choose it as one of this year's R2D4s. The fact is, I still find Ragtime an exciting and at times profoundly moving work. Despite having listened to the CD at least a dozen times, I'm apt to find tears coming to my eyes during the reprise of "Wheels of a Dream" in the finale. Great performances from the large cast, and the recording, while multimiked/multitracked, is unusually fine-sounding. If your CD buying budget for this year allows for only one show-music recording (pity!), make it Ragtime OFFENBACH: Les Contes d'Hoffman (The Tales of Hoffman)
London OSA-13106 (3 LPs, nla), 417 363-2 (2 CDs). 1972/1986. John Mordler, prod.; James Lock, Colin Moorfoot, engs. AAA/ADD. TT: 2:21:26 Les Contes d'Hoffman has had a number of recordings, but, for me, none has eclipsed the 1972 Decca/London set. It conforms to the interpretation that Olympia, Antonia, and Giulietta are different facets of Stella, and thus should be sung by the same soprano, and that the same baritone should sing the four villains. The soprano roles have sufficiently different vocal requirements that it would take, say, a Joan Sutherland to do justice to them all. Of course, the recording does have Sutherland, and she sounds simply glorious. Domingo, too, is at the top of his form, and Gabriel Bacquier makes a powerful impression as the villains. Bonynge maintains the musical and dramatic thrust of the piece, and sound quality is up to the best from Decca/London's Golden Age of Analog. The CD transfer is pretty good, but, as followers of Michael Fremer's column won't be surprised to learn, the LPs sound better. (XVI-2)

Canadian Brass
The Canadian Brass sprang from modest and highly experimental roots in Toronto, Ontario, in 1970. The brass quintet was not established as a serious concert ensemble at that time, and it proved an irresistible challenge to Gene and Chuck. Their imagination and consummate musicianship eventually elevated the art of the brass quintet to what it is today. The "fabulous five" spend most of their time on tour, and have performed with many major symphony orchestras in the US, Canada, Europe and Japan. They have gained a large international following of their solo performances that offer a large variety of musical styles. Having started with the very limited base of traditional works for brass, Canadian Brass set out to create their own musical world by transcribing, arranging and commissioning more than 200 works; the most recent being the brilliant Quintet by Michael Kamen. They are not only presenting works in the classical repertoire but continue to take daring leaps into jazz, contemporary concert music and popular songs. Most of this music, including the Quintet, is published by Hal Leonard. It is the inspiration and musical staple of students and brass ensembles in North America and Europe.

pianoforte (pee-AN-uh-fort, pee-an-o-FOR-tay) noun A piano. [From Italian, literally soft-loud. The term pianoforte is a contraction of Italian gravecembalo col piano e forte (harpsichord with soft and loud).] The piano was invented by Florence instrument-maker Bartolomeo Cristofori (1655-1731), as an improvement over its precursor, the harpsichord. Invention of the piano allowed a player greater expression with precise control over the volume, duration, etc. of a note, as compared with the unvarying tone of the harpsichord. Michael Christie leads the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra during a concert last year.
Classical connections Colorado Music Festival stresses communication and community in 27th year By Wes Blomster
June 22, 2003
As he approaches his third season as music director of the Colorado Music Festival, Michael Christie says that he is "encouraged by the possibilities and humbled by the reality" of the challenge that the 27-year-old program presents. A mere one year older than the festival, Christie was named maestro in the CMF's 25th anniversary season, when he was only 26. "It's a youthful program," he says, "and I saw immediately that the festival could become anything. Christie is well aware of the responsibility that came his way with the festival, founded by Giora Bernstein in 1977. In Bernstein's 24 years at the helm of this major summer classical music program, the CMF gained wide recognition. Bernstein was respected for his commitment both to the standard repertory and to modern and contemporary works. In several seasons the CMF received awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) for innovative programming. While the new maestro shares the founder's commitment, his programs clearly reflect the image of youth and experimentation that he brings to the program. Although eager to bring new dimensions to the experience of music, Christie stresses repeatedly that he will never program a work that the audience will not enjoy.
