Riley and Harrison have been close friends and colleagues for over 20 years, having performed North Indian classical vocal concerts together as disciples of the late master Indian vocalist Pandit Pran Nath. This is the first time they appeared together in the United States, performing their own piano music. In his first New York solo piano concert in a decade, minimalist icon Terry Riley performed recent piano works and songs and Michael Harrison performed a 45-minute abridged version of his award winning work Revelation: for Harmonically Tuned Piano.

Emmy-nominated composer Steve Sandberg currently scores "Dora the Explorer" for Nickelodeon/CBS. He has toured as keyboardist and vocalist with David Byrne, Ruben Blades and Bebel Gilberto. His studies of North Indian classical singing with Michael Harrison are a major influence in his recent series, Chants, Songs and Musical Landscapes, which he has presented at the Guggenheim Museum and Knitting Factory, alone and with such downtown luminaries as Ken Butler and Robert Dick. This concert devoted to works by Chopin and Bach marks his first classical recital in many years, celebrating his renewed studies with Michael Rogers.

Chinoiserie was assembled by an enterprising Taiwanese-American pianist who recorded her selection in February 2000 for the Chinese New Year, Year of the Dragon . It makes for an entertaining thematic sequence played with a light touch and what I would describe as relaxed virtuosity - pianism which makes light of difficulties and never allows the tone to harden. The pentatonic scale is rarely far away from the thoughts of the dozen and one composers represented (the extra one is a specially composed encore by Jacqueline Waeber-Diaz, recorded for the first time). Many of the pieces are (or have been in the past) popular, such as Cyril Scott's

Changing Their Tune
Practice, practice, practice. Conservatory study used to be all playing, all the time. But with the classical music industry in a serious state of flux, Peabody students are now learning the art of entrepreneurship.
By Dale Keiger
Illustrations by Serge Bloch
M Peabody Director Robert Sirota regards such entrepreneurial activity with more than approval. If classical music is to regain its vigor and maintain a central place in modern culture, Sirota says, entrepreneurship will be essential. Last September, at Peabody's opening for the new academic year, he told his audience, "In a profession that is besieged by doubt, by reduced funding for the arts, and by rhetoric from many corners that says serious music and music study are irrelevant, I am increasingly convinced that it is our responsibility at Peabody to bring the message of great music out into the world. As leaders in your field, what role will you in this room have in the transformation of the world's musical life?" Sirota believes that role will, by necessity, be entrepreneurial, to an extent greater than in past generations of performers. If Peabody is properly to serve its students, he argues, it must find the means to devote some of its training to the business of making one's way as a classical musician in a troubled profession that increasingly demands not just instrumental chops, but creative ways of finding audiences and sustaining oneself. Of entrepreneurial skills, Sirota says to musicians, "Either you better get them, or you'd better become very good friends with someone who has them. One way or another, somebody's got to have a clue."

From: UbuEditor ( ubuwebATyahoo.com
Date: Sun Aug 05 2001 - 20:02:00 PDT http://www.jennylin.net/music.htm
The Copyleft concept:
I first came across the term "Copyleft" in "Le Monde Diplomatique" about two years ago
and found the idea intriguing. It seems to originate in the world of software, but
clearly has implications in every area of "spiritual property."
But here is how I understand it, in a nutshell: anyone can copy my music (those pieces
that are not already published, that is) as long as they identify the composer, don't
claim authorship themselves, and allow others freely to make copies of their copies.
I think that this is the best way for the music to get around. I don't think publishers
are very useful in this, and may even make it more difficult; and I don't particularly want to be a publisher myself.
