Gamingforce Interactive Forums Gamingforce Audio The Concert Hall The Listening Room View Full Version : Yundi Li is my Idol! Anima Hello all. I have only begun to venture into the mighty world of piano music, and my speculations are enormous! I begun to listin to another Asian pianist named Lang Lang (Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto), and then bought his Carnegie Hall CD. Personally, I like the Concerto better than his solo playing.
However, when I heard Yundi Li, I fell in love with piano. Other than being a childhood prodigy, he is very acoplished, and enters most competitions with better credentials than most pianists.
Having bought both of his CD's (Chopin and Liszt), I just cant get enough of listing to them. I belive Yundi has much more of a emotional voice than Lang Lang, and his playing always excites me, and makes me go wild with emotion (and sometimes physical action). Having only started learning piano a few months inward, I can honistly say I am able to feel the music through Yundi's translations.
What are your thoughts/openions on Yundi Li? I heard he released a new Chopin CD in Europe only. Does anyone have it? Has anyone heard him preform live? Also, I belive there was a DVD release of his preformance at the International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition. However it is quite expensive :(

but why he like to make pose Posted by: on January 26, 2003 03:19 PM I've the same question too. An true artist should only let audience see his/er showmanship, of course music too. Making pose is just too much like a modeling or acting thing. In Yundi Li's case, some of his pose are really pretentious. That somehow will always discount the quality of the music produced. Posted by: AGM on January 28, 2003 02:32 PM Yundi Li is called "KIMUTAKU of Pianist" in Japan. Kimutaku is the most popular young actor in Japan. Audiences went to his concert not only to listen the music but also to see his face and pose, I think. Posted by: hirata on January 29, 2003 09:23 AM Well, in this case I guess a face can really help your career!! But don't forget plenty of good pianists out there with average look are as good as or even better than Yundi Li, yet they're not being valued and promoted the same way as good faces.... Talking about equality.....

A Startling Young Talent - Yundi Li: Chopin
Posted by Caleb Liu on September 19, 2003 12:34 PM (See all posts by Caleb Liu Filed under: Music Music: Classical Scroll down to read comments on this story and/or add one of your own. Chopin Recital Yundi Li Music from Deutsche Grammophon Release date: 08 April, 2003 The credentials are impeccable. He was the youngest ever winner of the Warsaw Chopin festival held only once every half decade at the tender age of 18. His performances in that competition stunned the world, showing a pianist who showed a brilliant range of touch and feel belittling his youth. Past winners of the Warsaw Chopin have used it as a launching pad for wonderful careers such as Martha Argerich and Maurizio Pollini. The question since then has been, can he live up to all the hype that has been generated, as well as to the vast achievements of other previous winners? This, his debut CD goes some way to answering those questions.

By contrast, Russia, long dominant in piano competitions worldwide, is supplying six competitors, and another has joint Russian and German citizenship. Counting the naturalized Chinese and Korean natives, the U.S. has five entrants. The explosion of Asian pianists is a newer phenomenon, but it's huge. Nelita True, professor of piano at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., says between 70 percent and 80 percent of the school's piano students are Asians. At New York's Juilliard School, it's more than 50 percent, says Yoheved Kaplinsky, who chairs the piano department. At the University of Texas, professor Anton Nel figures the Asian contingent is nearly 40 percent. Joseph Banowetz, professor of piano at the University of North Texas, says two-thirds of his students are Asians.

Rubinstein statt Gould

... I just don't like it. Some of his phrasings seem copied and pasted from a general catalogue of phrasings. Pogorelich, please come back! Rating: 3 out of 5 Very nicely played. But the Liszt Sonata is about more than "nice."
First the good news: Li fares better with the Liszt sonata than he does with the Chopin 3rd sonata of his debut disc. Now the bad news: the competition in this work is at the hyper-intensive level, and he has to do better than this to make an impression with me.
I'd like to hear him live in this work. Some who have say he was nowhere near as polished as he comes across here. Since the age of digital editing can make any pianist sound as note perfect as Michelangeli, I have no idea ... Read More Rating: 5 out of 5 Technical Prowess to Burn in Liszt's Demanding Music
For all the minimal reservations one may have about the ability to communicate at the keyboard, reservations this listener finds as a minor flaw, Yundi Li manages to squelch in this fascinatingly fine recordings of some of Liszt's toughest challenges. This recording is a treasure and reveals Li as an artist who demands and deserves our respect!
